I can't stand the lack of HD, the poorer graphics and sound or the lousy Sony network performance on the PS2.adam31 wrote:Ok I see its like a fraternity then, you gotta get stuffed in the trash can b4 you can be one of the guys. The sound on the XBox is really an underrated part of it. If you've got it hooked up to a decent surround system, it's really immersive. I haven't touched my PS2 in a year -- it's used mostly as a DVD player in my bedroom. I've played my GameCube more.
I do agree about the black and white buttons, even on the S controller.

3 points:
1.)You would be wrong that you cant use a harddrive, but right that it isnt supported (but it can be used for other things *wink wink*
2.)Sound and graphics arent too big a deal cause most titles are ported to Xbox anyway after being developed for PS2.
3.) Numbers dont lie: If XBOX is so superior then why is it being outsold nearly 3 to 1 when for a long time it was cheaper than PS2 and is now the same price? hmmmmmmmmmmmm
I am very happy with my PS2 with the small exception that I cant whoop you guys online.

1. He's talking about High Definition not a Hard Drive.
2. Not the ESPN titles, which are directly responsible for most of our online gaming around these parts. They look 10x better on the XBox because they are made for the Xbox, then ported DOWN to the PS2. High definition and 5.1 surround sound are a big deal to a lot of us, and the Xbox just destroys the PS2 in this regard as well (probably because HD is not even possible on the PS2).
3. Neither console is THAT much better than the other. However, for us, a sports gaming community, the Xbox dominates the PS2 in every sport EXCEPT for soccer, and it's only a matter of time before we get our own version of PES/WE. Now, if you're talking platformers, the PS2 has us beat...but this is a sports gaming site and the Xbox is far superior to the PS2 in that rhelm.

Sure numbers lie. Bad Boys II grossed more money than Master and Commander. Which is the better film? Britney Spears sells more CDs than the White Stripes, etc. etc.adam31 wrote:

The PlayStation fanbase is *huge*. Enormous. The fact that the Xbox sells as well as it does is an achievement in marketing by MS. Do you know the complete embarrassment it would be to Sony if MS made a new console and it outsold the PS2? It would be like Division I football team losing to a good DII school. There was NO WAY the Xbox was going to outsell the PS2, regardless of how good or bad the Xbox was going to be in the end.
There are so many more factors involved when deaing with sales totals than just the quality of the product.

Have to add to what DB said in response to Adam
Regarding 3) Type NPD in the search engine and you will see that I post them each month (games/hardware). Now you will notice that the Xbox has been doing pretty well lately. I would also love to see how many of those PS2 "sales" are replacement systems. I know I went through a few myself. In fact the Xbox just so happen to outsell the PS2 this very month.
If you think sound is not a big deal in gaming then you are only kidding yourself. People can shout "gameplay" until the cows come home but graphics and auido play a part in the experience. It would be like saying that watching an Imax movie would be the same had I seen it on a 20" TV. Hey it is just a port of the same thing.
Go find someone with a copy of Halo and play it in 5.1, then go play it using the TV speakers. Sound makes a world of difference and the PS2 can only simulate true DD 5.1 in cut scenes. I used to be like you regarding sound until I actually experienced it. Once you go true DD 5.1 (in game) you wont ever want to go back.
Also High Definition content can't be displayed on the PS2. Only 480 progressive scan. Sure there is not alot of support for HD (720P or 1080i) games but those of us who own HD TV's, we are getting a peek at the future of gaming. If you need to see the difference:
A: Get copy of MX Unleashed (Xbox)
B: Play game in 480i and then (720p or 1080i)
C: See major difference in textures and crisp lettering that is actually readable on the back of bikers. A small glimpse into the future.
Also like many racing games, great to play in DD 5.1 because you have many things happening in all directions.
Trying to join a site based league on your very first post? Then crying "fraternity" when you do not get in.

For the love of all that is holy. Once this site starts getting into the console wars debates and I have to listen to pimple nose comic book store employee tell me why their system is the best I am gone.
I mean get a decent job, buy all the consoles. If you are a true gamer you play the games, not the consoles. I bought a PS2 at launch just to play Madden. I got my Xbox mainly for sports titles.
Besides GTA:SA comes out soon, so I am sure you will be way to busy to be posting here in the immediate future.

Yeah I see the numbers you post each month, Im glad you do. It makes an interesting read and this is the only place I can find that information. I believe the latest numbers were 2.4 million PS2s and 900,000 XBOXs, cant be all to REPLACEMENT PS2s (Ive only had one mind you, and Im surely not the only one to have this happen) Ive had to send mine back to sony for repair but have only bought one.
You bring up the graphics and sound...when all I usually hear on this board and others its all about the gameplay anyway so that is a bogus argument. Some of the finest sports games ever have been on NES or Sega Genesis. Im not saying I would want to go back to that era, but all this 5.1 sound and 1080p or whatever is not what gaming is about.
I appreciate the guy who posted right above me (Danimal) for presenting an intelligent argument based on this fact: AS long as you enjoy whatever system you have is no reason to bash another person's choice. I was just interested in sports gaming with you guys and I get blasted for having an "inferior" PS2. Give me a break!
About me whooping you guys, it was an attempt at humor (AS IN JOKING AROUND) LIGHTEN UP!
AND FINALLY, I have been a member of this board since April 2004 and read it regularly, so just cause I only have a few posts, what the hell does it matter how many posts I have to be able to join your high and mighty league?????????????!!!!!!!! You base joining a league on number of posts, get a life!!!! If I had an XBOX, are you saying I would have been denied because I dont have 1000 posts or something????????? You, my friend, are a perfect example of the following: number of posts does not equal intelligence or maturity.
I don't know about 900,000 Xboxes, I think I read where XBL subscriptions are more than that. But don't quote me.
I have both. My PS2 collects dust. Games don't look as good, sound as good and the gameplay is the same. ESPN games for which I play mostly are ported down the PS2, so the port down to XBOX argument doesn't wash, and there really are no PS2 only games that I really want to play.
I have kept my PS2 to play MLB2005, and Grand Turismo 4 when it comes out. But at this point I can't even remember the last time I fired it up. It simply pales in comparison for me. Especially since in my experience there's no comparison between XBL and the Sony network, XBL for me has been hands down superior, with the exception of NCAA football.
BTW, I am on my 2nd PS2, as my launch model died about 14 months after purtchase.
If I had to live with just one, I would take the XBOX without blinking an eye. I like the exclusive games for it better, the online performance, and the XBL competition for the most part seems to have more people my age. Although there are morons online no matter what platform you play. If the PS2 I currentlt own died, I would not replace it.

You are making generalizations about the community. We do not all love the same things. The argument may be "bogus" to you as a PS2 owner but to me the DD 5.1 and ability to play a few games in HD is a big plus to others as mentioned above by others. Graphics and Audio are still big part of gaming and it's evolution. I can only speak for myself and what I enjoy.
This from the person who wrote the following on page 1?I appreciate the guy who posted right above me (Danimal) for presenting an intelligent argument based on this fact: AS long as you enjoy whatever system you have is no reason to bash another person's choice. Why do you assume I am a cheezer just because I have a PS2 (like most gamers) and not an XBOX. If this is the way you treat new people posting on your board, wanting to join a league, Im glad I have a PS2 so I dont have to be a part of your BS. Your high and mighty attitudes are moronic.
And isn’t it ironic... don’t you think?
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...

You are not grasping the issue at hand as it has nothing to do with a large post count, more like knowing who you are playing against. If you do keep track of the board you will find a previous thread where another new "poster" tried to join the league when a spot opened up. The owner of the league explained that he prefered to use people that have been around the DSP community and people he knew from other sites. That poster was kind enough to understand and did not throw around insults and a plethora of ???????????????????????? and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. He also owned an Xbox, just FYI.
I never recalled saying it was, but it gives me a really cool title for my efforts. A post count is simply a number, but if you never post how do you expect the community to get to know you? You, my friend, are a perfect example of the following: number of posts does not equal intelligence or maturity.
As for the latest numbers on hardware (have no clue where you got 900,000 Xboxes)? I am assuming you left out a 0?believe the latest numbers were 2.4 million PS2s and 900,000 XBOXs
As of July the exact NPD #'s
PS2: 24,433,000
Xbox: 9,367,000
GCN: 7,672,000
(rounded #'s since I estimated in August and Sept)
PS2: 24,900,000
Xbox: 9,900,000
GCN: 7,900,000
For 2004 through September
PS2: 2,634,545
Xbox: 2,054,771
GCN: 1,030,647
