College Football Discussion (for 10/9/04)
Let me get things started with my 'bold' predictions:
I don't see Texas beating Oklahoma. Maybe it will be a close game, but I think the Sooners win. And i don't see either Tennessee or LSU bouncing back and winning on the road. Georgia and Florida hold serve.
USC won't get revenge with a big win over Cal, but I think they win as well.
I think the FSU - Syracuse game will be more interesting than people think.
And looking ahead to next Thursday, every time I hear someone say that Louisville could just beat Miami, I add another touchdown to the final score. Miami wins 45-10. Once a game involving an upstart underdog gets on Miami's radar, forget about it. Canes win with special teams and big plays and nobody changes their opinion of Brock Berlin.

Loserville fans think they are going to go down there and put 30 or more up on Miami. I just don't see that happening. And looking ahead to next Thursday, every time I hear someone say that Louisville could just beat Miami, I add another touchdown to the final score. Miami wins 45-10. People don't realize that Miami has only given up 1 TD this year...ONE...and that's only cuz the offense turned the ball over on their own 20. That defense is the best in the nation. It's ridiculous how good they are. Just ask Chris Rix and Reggie Ball. If Miami loses it'll be a game where there is like 20 total points.
BTW Kevin, Berlin is going to start turning it around. Did you watch last weeks game? He looked mighty impressive. The loss of Erik Winston is going to hurt more than people think though. Nothing like losing your starting left guard to a season ending knee injury, freeing up Brock Berlin's blind side. That will hurt...but not Thursday.

Well Cal has had a good run.
But one stark fact is that its defense doesn't have any likely NFL players while USC's defense is full of them.
The offense is good but may not be good enough.
EDIT: And of course USC wants payback for last year.
So Cal will have to shoot for a second-tier bowl this year. Just hoping they acquit themselves well so that it helps recruiting. Tedford has a great record of getting QBs drafted high in the NFL draft.
Of course, once they get there, it's another thing.

Less the 24 hours until the Red River Shootout.
I always find watching non-BCS teams refreshing. They do not have the pressure of National Titles and Big Bowl games. They simply play for the love of the game. (/teary-eyed reply)

Penn State continues to send plenty of guys to the pros even though they haven't been good in years. Miami sent a bunch of guys to the NFL in the first couple rounds last year, but they didn't have nearly as strong a team as usual. I don't think that is the best measure of what makes a good college team. I think this is going to be a great game with USC pulling it out in the end.wco81 wrote:Well Cal has had a good run.

OU over Texas (not as close as many are predicting)
Minn over Michigan
Florida over Lsu
Ohio State over Wisc (close and boring)
Vols over Georgia

Consecutive wins over Texas - 5
Yards by True Freshman Running Back - 222
Silencing all the doubters of OU's defense by pitching a shutout against the #5 team in the nation, who had not been shutout since 1980 - PRICELESS
Man those 60 point games were fun but this one tops them all. OU simply dominated the O and D Lines. Just lined up and said stop the run and Texas could not do it.

Nope Paul Thompson is and many think he is just as good. Bomar only goes in if there is a blowout. Peterson is being redshirted but if White gets injured then he will come in and lose the redshirt.Neckthai wrote:To loosely quote Pedro...Mack Brown can just call Bob Stoops his daddy.
Looks like the Sooners will win the South, barring a breakdown by Jason White. Who's the backup? Rhett Bomar?
Man you guys are kinda hard on White. He was not stellar but he did not need to be when they ran the ball so much and did not need to pass. Hard to get in a flow when you are only throwing on 3rd down. Guess you have to find something to pick at with OU.

Oh and that Miami-FSU game was a real thrillride.

Well unlike yourself I am not able to make such a generalization since I have not been able to watch every Big 12 and ACC game to make such a statement. Therefore I picked out the team you love so much and the limited viewing I have had with theml. Of course it was just DB trying to be sarcastic and funny without accomplishing either.dbdynsty25 wrote:That game was boring as hell too...I never said EVERY game outside of the Big12 is a barn burner did I?bdoughty wrote:Oh and that Miami-FSU game was a real thrillride.
Ha Ha you got my laugh. Feel better? Good.
Back to enjoying my win. Presses mute button on DB's posts the rest of the day.

Definately good to see Army get off the losing streak. Ohio St and that sleep inducing offense loses 2 straight. SEC was full of upsets. Congrats to Tennessee for exposing Georgia for the team they really are and LSU for the bounceback over Florida. I guess Aururn might be the real deal in the SEC.
Penn St and Syracuse were oh so close to being the spoilers.
As mentioned above FSU gets beat at HOME against UTEP. Ouch. And yes Oklahoma St looked pretty good once again as did Texas A&M both teams OU has to play on the road. Kansas beats KSU.
But the score of the week - Texas Tech 70 Nebraska 10. Texas has to go to Lubbock, I smell yet another Red Raider upset.
Notre Dame and Navy next week is what I am looking forward to.
Wisconsin at Purdue and Arizona St at USC will also be good games.
