NBA Live 2005 Impressions

Just played two quick games and I'm quite impressed. I love the fact that fouls are actually called. The fastbreak issue is annoying but, oh well. I love the animations. In the post they are pretty good. Ben Gordon had a nasty put back dunk on me...very cool. I'm still getting used to the controls so I can't get too deep on impressions. One thing is for sure...the pro hop has been tempered dramatically...which is good. If you try it in traffic get ready to lose the ball or have an offensive foul called. Altering of shots is very nice also. If you are under/behind the backboard and you hit the layup/dunk button your player will adjust in midair to get a shot off. If you use the shot button from behind the backboard you will hit the back of the backboard...its well done. Overall the stats were pretty good. I only played 5 minute quarters so the point totals were low (35-40 points). I didn't even try the Dunk or 3 pt contest but I hear they are fun.

This is only from a few short games:
I like the rebounding. The ball occasionally hits the ground, but players box out and good rebounders seem to have a knack for the ball.
After my first game, I thought opposing teams played well strategically. I took Orlando against Miami and the CPU abused me with Shaq in the low post and finding Wade for mid-range jumpers. Then I played against Philly with Houston and Iversen barely touched the ball. Weird.
There are too many blocks. Dalembert (Philly) blocked Yao twice in a half on fast break dunks from behind (with no contact/no foul). Yeah right.
The court is waaaaaaaay too small. More deflections on easy passes than there should be, probably because of the court size.
I like the "feel" when shooting an open three pointer with a good shooter...you really can drain them when your guy is wide open, but the percentages are pretty realistic.
The contact is weird. There a bit too much of players sliding around. And there's the whole "I'm standing completely still but I will jump up and some magical force of nature will carry me towards the basket for the dunk" thing that I hate. Also, the computer guys get a huge speed burst if you're on a fast break to cover. Eek.
So far, it's mixed. I'm having fun, but I haven't played 2K5 yet to compare it.

I don't think that anyone is questioning whether or not the court is too small. I have to re-read through this thread again, but I don't recall anyone disagreeing with you on that point.
Even w/ that flaw I still have more fun playing Live than I do ESPN. I've played a few more games, and while my opinion of the game in general is improving there is just something about the game the bugs me. I just can't put my finger on what it is though.

I agree that the court is too small. I just don't think I would put as many "a's" in waaaaaaaaaaaaay as others. Maybe it is the camera angle. I am using baseline low zoomed in 3 notches and it doesn't seem thaaaaaaaaat bad
I agree about the blocked shots. It's not nearly as bad as Live 2003 when guards could block 10 shots a game though. Dalembert is at least a shot blocker (6th in the league). One of the first sliders adjustment I had to make was lowering blocks significantly and it seems OK now.

The sliders are really making this game awesome. I am getting fantastic results and totally realistic stats in all areas. My settings are pretty close to Pared's at OS. You should get a lot less blocks, a great variety of foul types, realistic field goal percentages, great rebounding numbers, etc. If you rent the game you may want to just start using these as a base and work from there.

My main differences are increasing user freestyle effectiveness (because they really toned it down this year at default) and lowering on ball physical defense (gets rid of some of the skating and increases the ability to drive to the hoop), and leaving the speed at 50.

I was all set to buy ESPN but in the OS impressions thread I'm seeing a great deal of negative posts. That's not good considering I was outdone with 2k4. I went to my Blockbuster yesterday and I was shocked that they had both games already and they were in stock. I chose to rent Live 2005 and I'm really enjoying it. I can see that they made an effort to fix things from last years game. They definitely call fouls this year.
I'm also using Pared's (OS) sliders and they are really good.
Anyone got any tips for someone who plays with player lock on the PG?
