World Series Baseball Xbox flaw

Post by pk500 »

I guess I was in a baseball mood last night after the strike was averted, so I rented World Series Baseball for the Xbox.

There´s a lot to like about this game, but there is one flaw that wrecks the experience for me: the strike zone.

The strike zone in WSB is huge. Pitches clearly at the shins or parallel with the adam´s apple are called strikes way too often. Same with inside and outside pitches.

This flaw forces you to be too much of a free swinger and makes it really tough to work the count because any marginal pitch is going to be a called strike. So I end up swinging way more than I should. And almost every time I back off, I find myself getting punched out on a marginal third strike.

Anyone else find this to be a problem in WSB?
PK this is indeed what really stood out for me. The expanded strike zone really made it tough to work the count at all.

No doubt it is too big. But I´ve played this game so much that I am used to it. I can work the count pretty good, but hardly walk simply due to the CPU not throwing enough balls. This is definitely not the most realistic baseball game on the market (as that must go to High Heat), but it is fun to me. Each system has a good baseball game out.

We are living in good sports gaming times right now. Seems there are at least two or more good titles for each sport to choose from. Hopefully the future is even brighter.

Phew! I thought maybe it was just me -- the John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" of video baseball -- a real free swinger.

Have the same gripe about this game. also, the runners get to 1st base about a step too quickly IMO. High Heat is THE baseball game to own and thankfully it´s coming to the XBox in the spring.

Is High Heat really coming to the XBox? I had heard Gamecube and PS2 only, but this would be very welcome news if they take advantage of the XBox´s graphic capabilities and the hard drive for running a franchise. A port of the PC version (with the tune variables restored) with improved graphics would be awesome!
3DO announced about a month ago that it would develop for the Xbox. No specific titles were mentioned, but we all assume High Heat will be one of the Xbox titles since its 3DO´s flagship sports title.

I can´t see them coming out with other titles for the xbox and not HH.

When I owned WSB, I was the free swinger for sure. I found no other way to go. In all though, a fun game of baseball. I´m not missing it though as football has got my attention 100%.
I agree: WSB may have been the most FUN baseball title I played this year even though it´s not as realistic as High Heat, which I owned and loved when I had a PS2.

But the big strike zone in WSB did hurt the longevity of the title for me. I just tired of being punched out on balls at the shins or a foot off the plate.
