Championship Manager 01/02: Where are you

Post by Jared »

Just curious to see if anyone out there is still playing CM and where they are in their coaching career. I haven´t touched it in a month...but not for a lack of desire. It´s an amazing game...too bad it tends to destroy all spare time.

My current game is in 2011, in the off-season. I´m managing Sheffield United. We won the title in the last game of the season, getting a 2-1 win over Norwich while Man U (who topped the table most of the season) tied 0-0 against Tottenham. Beat them by one point.

Joined Sheffield United in 2005, after leading the Tampa Bay Mutiny to MLS Championships in 2003 and 2004 (if they would only come back...sob). Then I tried to get a job in Europe...and the only team that gave me a chance was 2nd division Sheffield United. Got promoted a couple of times, made a few good moves in the transfer market, and now I´ve got a solid team.

How has everyone else´s careers gone? Are you still playing? Any highlight signings or memorable moments?

I got to 2010-2011 with Blackburn Rovers after I started with Dag and Red in the English Conference... I finally made it to the Champions League after bringing the club up from Division 1.

I´m probably going to start a new CM game on the laptop, since I´ll need something to distract me if I go out on the road again.

Yeah...part of the game loses it´s luster when you start getting lots of computer generated players. My Sheffield Squad is weird...most of my team is aging stars that other teams dumped because they´re about 35 (Beckham, Giggs, Kluivert) but still have a good year or two. Then I´ve got a few players in their prime (Donovan and Mpenza up front, Sorensen in goal), and a few really good prospects. I try fill the squad with promising signings from U-21 teams (for the B-squad), older players on free transfers, and then one or two "expensive" signings. It´s worked pretty well so far. Though I´m reallly cutting down the play until CM4.
We didn´t edit the post. We never touch posts after they´re written.
I think the software Jared uses automatically censors some words. I had to adjust after my more free-wheeling vocabulary at Sports Reviewers.

The software is funny, too. B*tch is forbidden, but ass isn´t.

Sorry. But it´s the software -- we´re not playing TASS here.

Thinking about CM and rivals to the crown, I´ve been playing the demo of EA´s Total Club Manager. It´s a 3 month demo, so I´ll give it another go and post some impressions or even a preview, if anyone´s interested.
Can you say...AN-EL-KA !!! Can you hear Fergie say "Roy deserved to be sent off". What nicer birthday presents can a man ask for (apart from Andrea Corr, but I understand that Paul has sent her in the post to me to cover the MCFC v Newcastle bet he lost, so I´m just waiting for her to arrive)
Yeah, let us know how the new EA football management game is!

I´m watching Liverpool-Newcastle live on Fox Sports World right now. Nil-nil at the 38-minute mark -- really pacey match, great fun.

Andrea Corr. MMM. How did you know I would lick the salt from her sweat?

Excellent comeback - draw was a fair result in the end, particularly as you appeared to be playing two circus clowns at centre half.

See the power of two people thinking about the heavenly Andrea ?

My current significant other has advanced the theory that my initial attraction to her was a slight resemblance to the sainted Andrea (which I admitted to as being the first 15 second attractor, but then it´s all her afterwards - I might be stupid, but I´m not THAT stupid)

Anyroad - good result in an OK game. Cheers for the cap, and your program should be with you soon. Now back to my Total Club research.

I´m working on a Total Club Manager preview as we speak. Hopefully I can have it posted later tonight.

As for the forum program, I think it has an automatic censor...I haven´t messed with it, so I think it´s the automatic default. That can be changed...but it does make things nice for the little people that might wander onto here.
