College Football Discussion thread...

Post by bdoughty »

For those who still enjoy the American sports which is becoming more rare on this forum every week.

Oregon is not that bad a team when they are not turning the ball over 7 times in a game. OU is playing pretty lackluster right now though. Dusty Dvoracek always reminded me of that psycho on steroids in the movie The Program. Unilke the movies Stoops was kind enough to kick him off the team.

Best game so far was West Virginia pulling one out over Maryland.

Auburn - LSU zzzzzzzzzzz Georgia - Marshall zzzzzzzzzzzz SEC football makes me sleepy.

Michigan escapes with a win over SD State. Big 10 teams need to stop scheduling them before the pull an upset. Ohio St is taking care of NC State so far.

Texas Tech goes down 21-0 to TCU and then promptly scores 56 unanswered points to win 70-35. 70 points in 2 quarters and 6 minutes has to be some kind of record in modern day football.

Arizona and the other Stoops are hanging tough against Wisconsin holding them scoreless midway through the second quarter.

This UCLA-Washington game sure is a defensive slugfest...

Well a little redemption for the Big 12 this week. Everyone but Kansas winning this week. What got into the water at A&M after being demolished at Utah? Beating up on Clemson after thrashing Wyoming 31-0. College Station can do that for you I guess.

Memphis losing beat by Arkansas St at the half? Wonder if I should consider another one of those avatar bets with Squid.

I have never seen a coach take a bathroom break? I realize that Michigan St football this year can be hard to stomach but that is insult to injury. LOL at having MSU get a TD return while he was away from the sidelines.

And finally an interesting SEC game tonight with Tenn/Florida.

Watched parts of a few games today. Just out of curiosity, why have so many extra points been missed in key games? Even a mediocre kicker should be able to make those, and yet today LSU managed to lose by a point because they missed the extra point. Amazingly, Auburn matched that feat but go lucky with the penalty to LSU.

Yikes!

Best wishes,

Doug

Wow speaking of missed extra points that Tennessee miss should have cost them the game. At least the refs in the LSU/Auburn game knew the rule.

15 yard penalty to Florida for unsportsmanlike conduct. Clock Stops.

Every Vol fan owes that side judge a beer. In my history of watching football that was a doubt one of the worst calls I have ever seen. He watches the Tennessee player smack the Gator player (no call) Gator player smacks him back. BAM... Tennessee gets a chance for redemtion and the win.

"Auburn - LSU zzzzzzzzzzz"

You have GOT to be kidding me! I just got home and watched the game (had to tape it) and that was one exciting game. The defensive struggle is one of my favorite types of games. All style and no substance makes ME sleepy, which is why I wouldn't watch an OKEE game if my nuts were in a vice...just kidding bd, a little revenge from an excited Auburn fan...

Well it had a great ending. Skip the first 3 1/2 quarters of the game and I give it two thumbs up for drama. ;)

OK, I'll give you that one. Being able to fast forward through parts gave me an advantage... But the score's the thing, after all, so I don't care if it was 2-0 on a sack in the end zone as time ran out...

That unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the UF-Tenn game was probably the worst call I've ever seen in a football game. The worst thing about it is that it stopped the clock. UT got the ball back with about 45 seconds left on their own 40. Without the stupid penalty, they get the ball on about their own 25 with 15-20 seconds left. That call decided the game. Absolutely pathetic.

LOL that is perfect slogan for most of the SEC games I have seen this year. After watching Texas Tech run up 70 points in just over a half it is hard to go back to 3 and out - punt, 3 and out - punt.

Jared I feel bad for you man. I would hate to be around Zook when he sees that replay. I hope for that officials sake he is dressed and in the car (could not be that far of a drive home after seeing that play) ;). I am not a fan of either team and was actually rooting for Tennessee there near the end (after the missed extra point and up to "the call") in hopes of seeing the kicker get some redemption. Sadly for Gator fans that sideline judge felt the same way.

How the hell was Iowa ranked #12?

I know I have said ASU was a better team than most people think, and they will challenge for the Pac 10 title, but they are smacking the Hawkeyes 44-0.

How about Memphis losing by 9 and score 21 unanswered points in 2 minutes and 24 seconds to win. True, they should never have been in that situation, but impressive nonetheless.

Not so fast there my friend. Florida lost that game in the 3rd Quarter when they had a 1st and goal at the One, then on third down the TE drops the TD, and then they miss the 21yd FG to go up 24-14. IMO, that was great game.

Maybe it is just me but "impressive" and "comeback win against Arkansas St" just does not fit well in the same paragraph. Stick to the soccer, rugby and darts with the occasional cricket match. Memphis will only break your heart. Especially when March rolls around.

Well that is Corsoesque logic for you. Florida loses the game in the 3rd quarter yet has the lead with under a minute to go in the fourth. Fortuantely my TV has a Corso/Albert/May mute button, so I only have to people from this planet. Of course to Corso's credit he roomed with Burt Reynolds at Florida St and was a BMOC also, so he was rolling in trim. Do you really think he is talking about a person when he says "not so fast my friend". ;)

LOL so true. Iowa #12 and Clemson was #25

Just like I mentioned in last weeks thread, the winner of this game will still be questionable. ASU is either really good on defense or Iowa is really bad on offense. Iowa struggled to get 17 points against Iowa St the week before. Right now I say it is a little of both. We get to find out more when they play Oregon St. Speaking of next week.

Big games next week...

USC at Stanford (I am not calling an upset but this one could be close.)

Penn State at #21 Wisconsin (It wont be pretty but it should prove interesting to see who wins out. If this game was in Happy Valley I might just take PSU after todays performance by Wisconsin.)

Alabama at Arkansas (could be tough for Alabama who lost their starting QB last night)

#12 Iowa at #17 Michigan (OVERATED....... OVERATED...... OVERATED.... A chant you will hear from both sides of the stadium and they would both be correct.) ;) Sorry JD

#25 Clemson at #11 Florida State (A game only a mother of a Bowden would love.)

Local stuff for us Texans and those who wish they were Texans...

My dedication to that Longhorn fan ("Carlos guy" - as I like to refer to him) from a few weeks back proclaiming Houston would beat Oklahoma

Rice at #6 Texas (Requires a little high end math, BCS formulas and logic passed down by that "Carlos guy" who I know is reading this /// Rice > Houston + "Carlos Guy" variable of Houston > Oklahoma (include AP ranking) Oklahoma #2 > Texas #6 * Houston actual TD's against OU in the real game x 9 = Rice victory by 2,475 points)

New Mexico at New Mexico State (NMSU took down Troy, now can they handle a Lobo?)

Texas Tech at Kansas (Could produce a higher score then when Bobby Knight comes to play in Lawrence)

North Texas at Baylor (Why would anyone attend this game? Go watch some HS football. Waco has some really great teams in the surrounding area playing a higher level of football.)

If only their talent and heart were as strong as your Michigan avatar is large.

I can see a win over Michigan St. As for beating Ohio St in Columbus.... You might consider taking the following week off in November and get a little extra insurance on your abode. See if they cover stuff like a shoe through your TV and some kind of "specialty coverage" on everything in your house that even remotely resembles scarlet and/or grey.

Even a Seminole fan like myself who hates the Gators had to admit that the unsportsmanlike call was absolutely horrible.

But then again, so was the 'catch' call a few years back.

Sidenote: Isn't Fulmer going to ever run out of daughters to hug at the end of a big victory?

I think the FSU fans showed a lack of class by booing the offense and Ricks on Saturday. As much as I will be glad to see a new QB, I don't think that home fans should boo one of their own - not in college anyway.

Preseason rankings are stupid.
Let them play 4 weeks then do a poll.....otherwise its just guessing and ass kissing that gets you votes in the polls....I know most of it works out in the end but sometimes that head start is enough of an unfair advantage.

The ASU fans were chanting overrated last night as the SunDevils went up 44-0.

The Big 10 as a conference is down this year. Both perenial powers Michigan and OSU, have some serious holes in their game. The Big 10 is wide open this year. Don't be shocked if Minnesota or Purdue wins that conference.

Oklahoma still looks to be the class of college football. USC put up big numbers against a very game BYU team, but the game was closer than the score and stats indicate.

Hey Jack, the Boys from SDSU, at least gave you guys a game. That's all I can ask from them. In the last 2 years SDSU has lost to OSU and Michigan by a combined 6 points.

Henne has a gun though, just needs to mature. They really need to solve their running game probs too.

No doubt man. I really see the Gophers winning the Big Ten title outright. SDSU has some talent. They have shown a lot of hart, I mean heart  in two of the toughest places to play in the Big Ten. I am looking forward to the UCLA game.

I'll tell you what JD, Hart made some big runs to convert 3rd downs in crucual situations. When a freshman can do that, that says something.

Henne will take some time, but he has all the tools. And in the long run I think Michigan will be better off for playing him now.

Breaston does not look like the same player as he did last year. The last two weeks they have gotten him the ball in space and he really hasn't shown the same explosion as last year.

Still as wide open as the Big 10 is, never count out the big boys, Michigan or OSU.

In other football notes, Chris Leak really impressed last night. I had only seen him play a bit last year. He's calm in the pocket and makes good decisions. I don't think anyone in the nation throws a tighter spiral, man he gets some serious RPM's on the ball. I came away from that game even more impressed with him than I was before.

ASU's Andrew Walter continues to be another very good QB, no one ever mentions. He droppped 425 yds on Iowa last night, it was like his 5th game over 400 yds in his career. ASU looks like they might just be for real.

I found out yesterday that Breaston fractured his foot this summer. It really looks like it is still bothering him.

I was hoping they would redshirt Hart and Henne,oh well I hope your right.
