Squid's talking about the CONCACAF Champions Cup me thinks. I don't remember if their games were televised or not before.
The US was in a semi-South American tournament previously, called the Copa Merconorte. It involved teams from the US, Mexico, and the northern half of South America. Wizards and Metrostars were in it...Metros went 3-3-0 (W-L-T) in Group play and were third in their group (in the group was Chivas, Millionarios, and Deportivo Italchaco or something like that), Wizards went 1-4-1 in a group with Santos Laguna, Sporting Cristal, and Barcelona of Ecuador. They got rid of the tournament because the fixture schedule was too crowded for teams in S. America also in the Copa Libertadores, and that it wasn't bringing in much money.
It'd be great to get the US into the Copa Libertadores, but that'd be very unlikely. Mexico only recently got spots, but they first had a play-in with Venezuala in the first few years and essentially had to prove themselves. I'd love for US teams to get in...but I doubt other teams would give up spots in the tournament (or that the tournament would expand) for them.
