Wow, a 25-year-old, tired franchise out of ideas is moving to a rival console. Stop the presses.
Next thing you know, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid and MLB The Show will be available on Xbox. Oh, wait ...
It really is hard for you to wrap your head around the fact Microsoft is going all in on cloud gaming, isn't it? The key to success with cloud gaming is making the titles platform-agnostic so they can be played anywhere by anyone.
Part of that process also is making the titles available on other consoles/handhelds while those machines are still the foundation of gaming during this transition period. Both Sony and Microsoft have sold consoles at a loss to encourage software licensing and sales, along with subscription sales such as XBL and PS Plus. They're not making much money on hardware even now, so why not spread first-party software to as many platforms as possible?
It's not 2001 anymore in Gamesville.

face the facts. it's over. and am i'm the biggest xbox fanboy in the world. queue taps...
What's over, console gaming? I think not. Sony and Nintendo will continue to battle it out.
If you think the Xbox ecosystem or brand are over, you're wrong. Xbox will continue but more as a cloud-based operating system for gaming on multiple platforms than as a hardware manufacturer. Robust online gaming has been Xbox's consistent strength in the marketplace against all its competitors, including Sony, since the introduction of XBL in 2002. Microsoft's strong cloud gaming platform only further secures that position.
This isn't just a pivot for Microsoft in gaming. It's a company-wide pivot.
The smartest thing Satya Nadella has done since he became head of Microsoft is to position the company from being a software firm to a cloud-based software firm. Azure, the MS cloud platform that is competing with AWS, is the biggest driver of revenue these days for the company. The only reason it's not the biggest profit source yet is because of the huge costs associated with building server farms and data centers.
Again, it ain't 2001 in Gamesville. You're evaluating everything by an old paradigm.

Exactly PK, and at my age, I doubt I'll purchase another console, the XSX will last me until I can't game anymore.
Same. I'm 60. Still enjoy gaming, but I don't play as much as I did 20 years ago. My current Series X probably will be my last console.

There is a trend where people are just buying a retro system and buying games for that. I may do the same.
I still have my old Xbox 360 boxed up in the garage somewhere. I may just dust that off and that'll be my gaming system for next gen. XB360 has every game imaginable out there that will fill my needs. For sports games, I don't need the newest Madden or MLB. The games today lack any ingenuity and are just rehashes year after year. I'll just play great titles like Madden 12, FIFA 12, MLB2K,etc....
And for non-sports games, XB360's library is one of the greatest if not the greatest for any kind of genre. So I'm covered there.
Too bad about Xbox. For the record, the Xbox gamers never gave up on Xbox, it was the MS suits.
Loyalty doesn't mean dick to a business: P&L does.
And the fact is, the PlayStation 5 sold 74.28 million units globally through March 2025. During the same span, Xbox sold 32.77 million units despite being launched at same time as PS5.
Xbox gamers may be loyal, but there aren't enough of them. Loyalty is a totally irrelevant metric to a business if that devotion doesn't lead to increased sales and overtaking a competitor.
I was loyal to Matt's Premium Beer, a regional brew popular here in the 1970s and 1980s. But not enough people bought it, and West End Brewing Company phased it out. No different with Xbox hardware.

Good for those who have never played Halo and were always tied to the PlayStation eco system. I have to wonder are there really that many people out there who haven't played Halo at some point?
Microsoft gaming will survive in one way or another. Either through software sales or their "play anywhere". For someone like myself who finds gaming less of a commitment than it used to be, I'll still be happy to sample a game on my PC.

And considering there hasn't been a great or innovative Halo game released in, what, 20 years, how much resonance and relevance does this series still have? The Halo TV series lasted a whopping two seasons on streaming -- not a great sign of lasting cultural zeitgeist for a gaming franchise that hit its peak at least 20 years ago.
Halo feels more relic than relevant.

It's been way more popular since its been on Netflix, but I agree Halo's ship has sailed.
In regards to Xbox if they can ever get their play your own games anywhere system to include everything you purchase then I wouldn't even need an Xbox as I can play Xbox cloud games just fine on my Samsung TV, I think my console buying days are over.
