ESPN Online Leagues- WTF?

Post by pacuca »

What in hell was VC thinking when they came up with their horrible NFL online league structure? No divisions-conferences, bad scheduling (don't play division opponents twice), 16 teams in playoffs (instead of NFL standard 12), can't replace a deadbeat owner etc....

And this is an NFL licensed game? Ha. Who is in charge of programming the online leagues, surely not an NFL fan or someone who is familiar with the NFL structure. Also, why did the higher ups approve such a shoddy programmed online league site.

Online gamers interested in a real NFL experience via online leagues will be disappointed for sure once they log on and try to set up their leagues like the real NFL, I know I was.

Edit: Maybe some of the OS guys (BK, TCrouch) can shed some light on this as I know they are in contact with people employed by VC.

It would be nice if I could just get into the leagues I've joined. Everytime I enter 'My leagues', it hangs, then gives me a message saying 'Failed to get leagues.'

What did you expect for a $20 product. With all these problems Sega is having people are really going to think that NFL 2K5 is a budget title not worthy of a higher price tag. I don't know if it's higher expectations or what, but gamers sure seem to be down on this year's football titles.

"what does this mean for your leagues?"

Not much. I was just venting my frustration at VC's horrible attempt at a proper NFL online league structure. At FGN, I'll let the majority rule as to whether we use our league software in conjunction with Sega's or just use Sega's flawed system.

I can tell you that there's a lot of bad stuff going on in the online leagues. For the individual stats though, it's worth it (to me). However, in an 8 game season in one of my leagues I'm on the road 6 games. There aren't any divisions in any league I'm in. Just one big cluster of teams scrambling to make the top 4/8/etc (you can customize playoff teams when you create the league, it's not a set number).

VC is actually doing some work to fix some of the statistical glitches and online problems with the patch releasing tomorrow and August 6th. I will reserve judgement until after that date.

Right now, though...I'm in 5 leagues and haven't been able to log in after work in 4 days.

For my part, I'm not happy at all. Right now with this structure, I have no ineterest in being in a league longer than 10 or so games. There is no point to forcing someone to play the Texans or the Cardinals in a single table, randomly shceduled league. Terry's on the road for 75% of his games in his league???? WTF?

The only thing left that I find cool is the ability to trade players and have injuries in an online league. But playing a long schedule of 16 games against randomly selected teams just to have trades and injuries possible: not very enticing to me right now. If we could put together a full, 32-team NFL style league the old way, I might be in for that, but of course then we'd be at the mercy of the 'who knows when' roster updates. Still, that way we could do the real NFL schedule, play games out of order or at our convenience, replace deadbeat owners, set up the playoffs the way they should be. I guess I should be posting this over at FGN.

I suppose I was naive and engaging in wishful thinking to imagine that a game that advertised 32-team NFL online leagues with 'live rosters' would actually resemble the NFL. Silly me. Now, if MLS would look at this single-table system. . . . Are the devs or just the publishers from Japan  ? Did they subcontract out to Konami for their onlne league "logic?"

Many of these problems existed last year.

They did try divisions but it was all wrong so their solution seems to be to bag it. They obviously spent most of the time on new features like VIP which they can use to market the game. They can't exactly market the game by saying they've fixed or enhanced an existing feature.

And not being able to replace owners is a killer. I got in a couple of leagues with 32 teams so those leagues are "FULL." But a couple of people dropped out and the league status is still "FULL" so nobody else can join the league even though a couple of teams have "NO OWNERS" in the leagues.espnvideogames.com site.

Basically, people join a bunch of leagues figuring they'll stick with whichever ones fill up first. Or they have something else come up and they have to drop out. Well that kills the leagues. I think what happens is that when games involving vacated teams come up and the deadline passes (also something which commisshioners have no control over once they create the league), it arbitrarily awards a forfeit, even though one guy was ready to play.

So it's not fair to the guys who stick with the leagues and the stats are all messed up. No option for the commish to sim the game at least so that you can have some semblance of stats.

BTW, EA is making some big announcement about online play next week. Again, the betting is online leagues. We'll see if they do any better.

League issues aside, I wouldn't go so far as to stamp it as a 'budget title.' I LOVE the way it plays. In fact, I don't even mind the way the leagues are set up, given all the cool stat tracking, etc. If they'd just fix it so that I can get into my leagues and play my games, I'd be happy.

Ken Bishop @ Kush has confirmed that online leagues for NHL2K5 will have adjustable sliders for online leagues but he's mum on whether or not they will have divisions/conferences.

"Many of these problems existed last year."

And should've been fixed before they released this years game. No wonder why they are only charging $20.00 EA must be laughing their asses off at VC's lame attempt at leagues and will probably do their online league setup the right way and put another nail in ESPN NFL's coffin. And I thought this was the year ESPN beats Madden.
