Help! Old TV problem: Edges of XB1 games getting chopped

Post by pk500 »

Hi all:

The edges of many of my XB1 games are getting chopped on my 50-inch, 2008 Panasonic plasma 720p TV. Some games offer margin adjustments, but many do not.

It's annoying, as many of the graphics being chopped are important parts of a game's UI.

Is this problem caused by my older TV, since I reckon all games are optimized now for 1080p or higher? Are there any global fixes either through my TV remote or Xbox One calibration? I didn't see anything in settings, but maybe I didn't look closely enough.

Appreciate any help the A/V gurus here can provide. Thanks!

P.S.: Save the damn "get a new TV" wise remarks. It's already in my plans for later this year. :)

IDK if you XB1 is set for 720p then it shouldn't be cutting off the edges of games IMO. I think this is a TV issue and not a console issue but that is just me guessing.

At Paul's age, let's not rule out an eye problem. :)

Paul, my Samsung plasma is a 1080p and I have the same issue, however, most of my games seem to give me the options to resize and change brightness. TGC2 does not seem to give either and it is very dark on my TV and it feels like a decent bit of the UI is getting chopped. Very annoying. Which other games have you noticed this on? I will try it out as I bet I have a lot of the same ones. Thanks!

The problem

Your TV likely has either 1,920 by 1,080 pixels ("Full HD" 1080p) or 3,840 by 2,160 (Ultra HD or 4K). The signal you're sending it, either from cable/satellite, Blu-ray or some 4K source, is exactly the same number of pixels as your TV (yes, 1080i has the same number of pixels as 1080p).

So if your TV takes that image, and zooms in on it, it has to readjust every pixel to fit. It has to "scale" the image. Even if it does a good job at this, it can't be as good as just leaving the signal be. No matter what, an overscanned image will be softer and potentially noisier than a non-overscanned image. Overscan actually loses you some of the resolution you paid for.

How to fix it

Each TV company has a different place and name for overscan. I can't list them all, but I hope I can give you a few examples so you can find it on your TV.

The most common setting name is called something similar to "Size." It might also be "Wide," "Screen Fill," "Screen Fit," "Aspect Ratio" or "Format."

Annoyingly, once you find the control, the options aren't always labeled well. What you're looking for is 1x1 pixel mapping, which, as it sounds, maps each pixel in the source to each pixel on your TV. Some TVs will label this as "Full," "Fit" or "Dot by Dot." If it's not clear, select each one and see which one shows the most image.

Others TVs, like Panasonic and Sony, have an additional setting you must enable to get 1x1. On many Panasonic TVs, once you've enabled "Full" you also have to select "Size 2" in the settings menu to eliminate overscan. Sneaky.

If you get stuck, the manual (paper or onscreen) probably has the answer.

You can resize in TGC2.

Look for Options>HUD>HUD Offset and resize from there.

Hope that helps as I am trying to recall from he Beta.
