ANNOUNCING: DIRT RALLY PS VR
By Christina McGrath - on January 12
Since PS VR launched, we’ve had a lot of queries from you wanting to know if DiRT Rally was going to be available on the platform. Today, we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be adding PlayStation VR support to the game in the coming weeks!
Yep, that’s right – you’ll now be able to play the highest rated racing game on PlayStation 4* with PS VR. The upgrade, which will be available as DLC for existing players on the PlayStation Store, will also be available from retail with a new boxed version of DiRT Rally, which comes complete with the VR add-on.
The PS VR functionality will give you a fully immersive off-road experience, with the upgraded game supporting every car, every route and every discipline within DiRT Rally.
Interested? Well, good! Our new trailer for the PlayStation VR update is available here. Take a look and see what you think:
The update will put PlayStation VR users into the world of rally like never before, as they take on some of the most challenging rally stages and environments in the world. Not only this, but they’ll be able to take on a certain Colorado-based iconic Hill Climb, and try their hand at top-tier multi-car racing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
But that’s not all! As well as allowing you to drive any of the stunning Rally, Rallycross and Hillclimb cars in full VR, the update to DiRT Rally will enable a game-changing second player to join in on the fun. Using a DUALSHOCK 4® controller, the second player will take the on the role of co-driver – using the social screen to understand when to send calls to the driver using the DUALSHOCK 4 buttons and touchpad. Making those calls at the right time will be the difference between the driver hearing the correct information at the right time, so it’s crucial that this is executed properly.

Wow, didn't see that coming. If Gran Turismo Sport has solid support, I'll suddenly be very interested in getting a PSVR headset.

Dirt Rally makes it really hard to save up enough money to buy multiple top end cars. It took me forever to save up for the current generation Ford rally car. Bad ass, but I wanted to own all of them. I also wish the game had 2x as many courses. So much fun, but I'm at the point now where I have memorized a lot of sections. The most fun aspect of rally racing is the unknown. After multiple times on a stage, it isn't nearly as fun. I wish there was some kind of random course generator like the random maps in Minecraft.

With my interest in motorsports increasing by the day I decided to dive into the new Rally Season. I watched all the redbull coverage over the weekend and picked up Dirt: Rally. I don't know much of anything about Rally driving so it's been a real challenge. Fun as hell to try to figure this stuff out. My biggest complaint is the apparent lack of a "broadcast" replay camera similar to any other racing game out there. Oh well. If that's my biggest complaint i'm not doing too bad.

Re: DiRT Rally
Ott Tanak finishing the Power Stage last weekend at Monte Carlo, down two cylinders in his engine, ladies and gentlemen:

Tanak's performance in the Power Stage may not be topped this season. He drove the entire stage down two cylinders and lost 46 seconds to Hyundai rival Dani Sordo on the early uphill section, putting his third-place spot in jeopardy. But Tanak drove his car, with its wounded engine, like a prison escapee on the downhill final stretch and made up all but about eight seconds on Sordo, keeping third place.
Breathtaking.

Welcome to the wild world of motorsport. You have plenty of knowledgeable fans here at DSP ready to help you understand and enjoy this varied, wonderful global sport even more.
I'm glad you've latched on to WRC. The most exciting and underrated form of four-wheeled motorsport on Earth, in my opinion.
Red Bull TV has a nice ancillary video called "The ABC's of WRC" -- or something like that -- to serve as a very nice primer for the sport. Check it out. Also check out this story about the meaning of co-driver's pace notes: http://jalopnik.com/5973232/the-secret- ... e-of-rally
I also recommend the WRC website, wrc.com. It explains some of the nuances of the sport pretty well.
Once you brush up on rally, I suggest you follow me to the dark side to explore MotoGP. Grand Prix motorcycle racing is such a spellbinding and compelling form of motorsport. My favorite of all!
Welcome aboard, dude!

Wait until Sweden next month, dude. Insane speed and air on snow, and the cars stay on the stage by bouncing off the snowbanks at speed if there's enough accumulation.FifaInspected wrote:Thanks Paul.

Sweden, Finland and Wales Rally GB are my three favorite rallies of the season. Sweden is on snow, Finland on gravel and Wales usually on mud. I've grown to dig Catalunya, too, ever since it switched from all asphalt to a mixture of asphalt and gravel a few years ago.
Asphalt rallies are fine, as the speed is nutso. But the cars don't slide sideways and spit gravel or snow, so they don't look as spectacular on asphalt.

Re: DiRT Rally
Pk, what do you think about Ford and their involvement in WRC? I know they were huge back in the late stages of Colin Mcrae and his career. I haven't been invested in WRC for several years. I read a thing on reddit the other day basically saying Ford have seen the success of M Sport, and now want to jump back into the sport. Not sure what exactly that means, but a lot of people were basically saying Ford only wants to jump back in and be a winner, and that it's a shitty way to go about it. What involvement does Ford have now with M Sport, and if they became a works team, how would that change things besides the obvious financials?pk500 wrote:Great vid, Fletch. In my mind, when I think Rally I think Mitsubishi Lancer and Subaru WRX. It's cool seeing Toyota and Hyundai in the mix, but it just isn't the same. Kind of like if Chevy and Ford left Nascar for Honda and Nissan. The most iconic rally car of all time IMO is Colin Mcrae's World Rally Blue WRX. That and the white and red Ralliart Lancer Evolution. I know motorsports is a business and you don't always get back what you put in, but it just seems wrong to see a Korean OEM in the running, but Subaru and Mitsu are nowhere to be found.

Re: DiRT Rally
Fletch:
M-Sport remains a satellite team with factory backing. It's not a full works team. But I'm sure Ford kicked in some more cash this year so the team could afford Ogier's pay check.
A bigger pot of money is the biggest advantage of a works team. Factory teams can spend on more engineering, more testing, more R&D. And the factories usually are willing to spend more cash to fix problems and win.
Agree with you 100 percent on the Subaru being the iconic rally car for me. I only started following rally in the late 90s, so I wasn't tuned into the scene during the days of the early Minis, Lancias, Group B Fords, Renaults, etc.
I've always been a Soobie guy in WRC. Pained me to no end when the company withdrew.

Re: DiRT Rally
DSP DiRT Rally 2017 - Sweden
With the real life Rally Sweden coming up next weekend, I am just testing the waters to see if there is any interest in getting some virtual rallying going. With Dirt 4 coming I wanted to give this one last try. I wish the way the leagues worked it wasn't so difficult to capture and track results. Due to some of the limitations, I am going to try for one event at a time. Will see how it goes. I'll try to do better than my last attempt to get the league going. I don't have much time to game these days, but I have really been missing DiRT Rally. Going with one event at a time should also give us the ability to change things up if people don't like the cars, settings, stages, etc.
For this first one, I am trying something a little different to hopefully increase participation and decrease frustration, but still keep a little of the difficulty. Using the DiRT Rally Stage guide, I have tried to create the flow of their real world counterparts. So it is a total of 8 stages with service areas after Stage 2, 4, and 6. When completed, you will have done all the stages in their proper order for each location. There are no long stages, but each 2 stages makes up one of the long stages in the game. The idea here is that you can get in a couple a night, the whole thing at once, or anything in between... whatever your preference and you have time for.
The other change is that I am allowing Event Restart. Again, this is to encourage participation and eliminate frustration. On more that one occasion, people were crashed out after the first stage or two, and that makes for a lonely rally by the end. The idea here though is to only use this if you meet your demise and can't finish the rally, not to just keep re-trying if you did not like your final time. However, I am not going to police that since this is all just for fun anyway.
The weekly rally will start on Monday at 8:00pm Eastern Daylight Savings time and end at 3:00 am Eastern Daylight Savings the following Monday. However, it is going to appear that it is available until 7:00pm on Monday. So, it is by DSP gentleman's agreement that I ask that no one posts any times after Monday morning 3:00am EDT for the previous weeks rally. This will hopefully give me time to screenshot all the results and stages and then put the times into Excel or Google Sheets. Feel free to use whatever assists you want. However, it would be helpful for everyone to post what settings they are using, controller preference, FFB settings. Anything that would be worth sharing.

Relive the fierce battle of the 2001 championship between Richard Burns and Colin McRae or fast forward time to 2007. Take your pick and you'll be in for a treat. Either dancing on ice in Monte Carlo, kicking up dust in Greece or jumping over Finnish crests, you'll be rewarded with a great driving experience, no matter which car you choose. Handling wise they're quite forgiving, the modern suspension ensures a smooth ride. Some helpful DiRT Rally Links:-Ventures deep into the frozen and remote forests of Sweden and Norway.
-All but the last of Friday’s seven stages are in Norway. Röjden provides cross-border competition, starting and finishing in Sweden with the middle section in its neighboring country.
-Shovels are mandatory in case competitors have to dig their cars out of snow.
-It featured in the inaugural championship in 1973 and has been dominated by Scandinavians, who won every year until 2004 when Sébastien Loeb broke the mould. Sébastien Ogier is the only other ‘outsider’ to win.
-Stig Blomqvist and Marcus Grönholm top the roll of honour with five wins each
-Colin’s Crest in Saturday’s Vargåsen stage. As a mark of respect for the late Colin McRae an award is made for the longest jump here. Eyvind Brynildsen set a new record in 2016 with a 45 metre leap. One for the brave!
