The TV is streaming directly to the TV. I'm not sure there is any pass through. It's the same as streaming Netflix to your PC or iPad. I'm not sure what exactly you're asking either. The TV is the output right? The other devices are inputting to it through HDMI.Wilk5280 wrote:Stupid question time.
When using the TV's Netflix and Youtube apps (KS8000), how do you display what the current output is? Whenever I switch HDMI ports from Comcast to XBOX One or vice versa it displays up top. That doesn't happen when I select the TV's apps for some reason.

I worded that question poorly. I'm asking how to display the current resolution being displayed on the TV. I can do it when Comcast or the XBOX One S is my source, but don't know how to do it when using one of the TV's apps like Netflix or Youtube.Danimal wrote:The TV is streaming directly to the TV. Yeah I'm hearing that about the built-in streaming apps.
But in the case of something like Netflix, you can't even select 4K stream, even though they charge extra for it. It's auto-selected depending on your connection speed.
On mobile devices, streaming apps. have debug modes where there is a way to get the logs to show what kind of stream you got, codecs used, etc.

Ah, not sure as I don't even know how to show the current resolution for my XB1 or DTV.Wilk5280 wrote:I worded that question poorly. I'm not sure you're correct, one of the first things I did was watch 4K content on my new TV via Netflix with the TV's built in app. There is no 4K stream technically, you select 4K content and I guess you might only see the content if your speed is good enough but idk as I was able to easily find it and select it.wco81 wrote: But in the case of something like Netflix, you can't even select 4K stream, even though they charge extra for it. Having said that, aside from their own shows and some really simple titles like scene scapes of oceans and what not there isn't a lick of 4K content. For example I got a few 4K Ultra Blu-Rays with my bundle but those movie are not available for 4K streaming anywhere that i saw, Netflix or elsewhere. I was able to find 4K content on Youtube but again this is mostly 4k video shot by people in vacation spots.
Aside form gaming and I'd even argue that the pool of titles is slim right now, 4K isn't going to blow you away with other types of entertainment. Even the 4K movie disc selections were kind of slim.

Not sure that is accurate. I get 4K content on my 4K TV through Netflix. The differences over 1080p content from my previous TV are amazing. Have great connection speed there for it as my TV is hardwired to my router.wco81 wrote:But in the case of something like Netflix, you can't even select 4K stream, even though they charge extra for it. On my previous 1080P TV, I never was offered 4K content with the same connection speed. It may be a combination of both 4K TV detection and connection speed, but it is not just connection speed from what I have witnessed here.

What blew me away was launching the TV's web browser, and logging into Youtube. Then search the "HDR to SDR" movie (the Samsung Quantum Dot display one), switch it to 4K, and be blown away. LG Chess is pretty incredible, too.
My father in law was over, and immediately went shopping after Thanksgiving. It was that impressive, both color palette and picture quality--even from Youtube.com

No doubt 4k content is stunning but aside from gaming I don't see a lot of it out there. I decided against the DTV package for now unless I can get a Divot deal out of them. Having Sunday ticket for 14 years gets me a lot of s*** for free.
I'm not sure I follow what you mean Terry, how did you switch it to 4k? I thought the TV auto detects 4K contents and just shows it?

I am not at home now, but on the KS8000, if I remember correctly you press the home button, that will take you to settings. Press on the select button (circle round button surrounded by the directional pad) on the HDMI that you want to check the resolution, and that would show briefly on top of the screen.
If I don't have the Xbox on, usually my TV provider displays the channels at 1920x1080.

Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
When you view Youtube through a browser, you control the resolution with the normal "youtube" configuration within the video. If you don't, it auto selects. When you choose the Youtube App, everything is automatic (at least I've never found a per-video way to control resolution, it seems to automatically choose it). But in a browser, you choose the resolution manually, and it doesn't downgrade based on connection speed.Danimal wrote:No doubt 4k content is stunning but aside from gaming I don't see a lot of it out there. Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Thank you for this as it only proves my speculation. There is no way when watching Breaking Bad on the Netflix app is it streaming at 4k. I'm disappointed that you can't force the resolution like you can viewing youtube in the browser.TCrouch wrote:What blew me away was launching the TV's web browser, and logging into Youtube. Not sure why, but using Netflix app on my xbox one streams in 4k while the TV's native app doesn't.

Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Thought I would report back. I reset my TV completely and re-did the setup from the beginning and so far everything is looking much better and no weird darkness problems.
I'm still a little confused on the settings as some are not available no matter what mode I'm in, like UHD Black Level and putting it into default movie mode which is what most setting guides suggest gives me a really yellowish picture. Overall for playing games it is stunning, the Ultra HD movies were also stunning, however annoying they are in letterbox not using my full screen and no apparent way to change that with the XB1.
I love their is no input lag on this set when game mode is on. My other Sammy had terrible lag so this is a pleasant surprise. I'm also not 100% positive on using the remote to control my DTV box. Some stuff works, other things don't like the guide button.
Overall great set and happy with the purchase.

Anytime....I ended up taking 2 sets back (the 55's) and so I know what taking a 65 back would have been like....Danimal wrote:Thanks and thanks for the tip on the reset.DivotMaker wrote:Good to hear things are working out Dan....

Has anyone compared a 4K TV with and without HDR? Is it worth the extra money? I'm looking at 4K HDR sets and they are on average 300% more expensive. Best Buy has a decent/good 4K Vizio for $398 and the cheapest 4K HDR is $1200. Just looking for a 4K set to use with the PS4 Pro and next years Scorpio. Still not sure if HDR is needed for video games.

IMO that is where you notice it the most. I watched a few Ultra 4K movies with HDR and I really didn't notice much difference in terms of HDR than a regular Bluray.Rodster wrote: Still not sure if HDR is needed for video games.
In games because you're looking around and at your own pace it is more detectable, at least IMO. Now do you need it? idk that is a personal call.

OK, cool i'll have to head down to a BB and see one in action or my cheap ass could wait till next Black Friday when they should be half the price.Danimal wrote:IMO that is where you notice it the most. OK so you guys sold me on HDR.
Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
It's a massive upgrade for games. Brights are so bright they can hurt your eyes sometimes, while there seems to be about 20 different shades of black in there for shadows and dark scenes.

There may be other differences involved than just HDR to explain the price difference.
Also the cheap model may be an older, closeout, while the HDR models are relatively newer.
Timely article just came out on HDR:

Seeing some weirdness with XBOX One S and Gears 4 w/ HDR on the Samsung KS8000. Forza looks bright and vibrant, but when I play Gears everything is kind of dark and washed out. I double checked to make sure the backlight is maxed out, but pretty surprised how bad this looks.
Anyone know of issues with Gears and HDR or anything that might be going on here?

Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Finally ended up with the set I wanted all along....the 65" Samsung 8000. Took the 60" back when I could get the 65" for $300 more. Wife stated our old Entertainment center will be going in our game room and she will be getting a new Entertainment center with the new TV installed on the wall. For some reason, the 65" is putting out a better picture than the 60" No idea why, but it looks much sharper and the detail is outstanding, much more so than the 55" and 60". Could be that I have finally figured out how to calibrate these 8000 series TV's.....Loving the new set....huge and impressive screen, especially going from a 42" 1080p set.....
Oh and FYI, DirecTV still has not addressed the 4K box Samsung 8000 series random sound drop out.....

Re: Kicking The Tires On A New TV...Advice Needed
Dude, I had the EXACT same issue. I told Terry about it and he made me think I was nuts as his looks fine. It's the only game that is like this for whatever reason. The menus are just plain so dark I can't even tell what button it is asking me to press. I adjusted every setting and reset the TV because of that other weird darkness thing. Everything got fixed by that except Gears. I just think it is the game and while this won't help you I downloaded it and played it on my PC and it looks incredible, it is probably the best looking game I've ever seen. No idea what is going on with the XB1S version though.Wilk5280 wrote:Seeing some weirdness with XBOX One S and Gears 4 w/ HDR on the Samsung KS8000. I have my TV set for Game mode and I switched back to HDR mode and see if there was an issue. Colours were beautiful still and I didn't see the washed out effect you experienced.Wilk5280 wrote:Seeing some weirdness with XBOX One S and Gears 4 w/ HDR on the Samsung KS8000. Gratz on the 65' model Divot, I am loving mine.
