I fail to see the point of everyone bitching about officiating ad nauseum every week in every major sports thread. It's a given...it's not changing...just hope it doesn't affect your team more times than it helps.
Re: NFL 2016/2017
I generally agree with this, but the NFL has created another sort of problem for itself. By changing fundamental rules like what is/isn't a catch, they have put a spotlight on this garbage instead of the athletes.dbdynsty25 wrote:I fail to see the point of everyone bitching about officiating ad nauseum every week in every major sports thread. Re: NFL 2016/2017
Blatant targeting penalty not called against Atlanta today had me damn near not watching football for a while. It could have cost the Eagles the game. That and a ridiculous missed PI right before it. The Philly fans would've gone after the officials after the game if the Birds didn't grind it out. Tired of it.XXXIV wrote:They have taken the game from the players and put it to their best interests....RobVarak wrote:I generally agree with this, but the NFL has created another sort of problem for itself. I'm with you. I've been listing to people b*tch about the officiating in every sport I've watched since the 1970's. I'm thinking before that it was pretty much perfect.dbdynsty25 wrote:I fail to see the point of everyone bitching about officiating ad nauseum every week in every major sports thread. I saw Kansas get completely robbed when the officials failed to call a shot clock violation on Indiana. The game went to OT, so obviously, those two points screwed us. But in reality, I also saw Kansas get some calls favorable to them, and Indiana lost two players down the stretch.
Regardless of the calls, the game came down to execution. All sports come down to execution. Bad calls happen in every game. Play well enough that a call or two doesn't screw you. And yeah, sometimes they do. But sometimes they screw the other team.
I hate watching sports with people that spend the game armchair officiating, because it is the same every... f***in... game.

What a PrimeTimer between the Hawks and Pats. It basically came to another yard or two at the goal line between the 2 teams.. Both QB's had feather like throws for TD's but Wilson's touch was a bit better tonight as the D stood strong.
Re: NFL 2016/2017
It actually does and has changed. A bad call (or non call in my example) is a bad call. Blatant non calls are inexcusable and deserve the attention they get.Aristo wrote:I'm with you. Think the difference is if there are bad calls, the complaints will echo for at least a week on social media with people playing videos in addition to around the clock coverage on the sports networks.
Ack in the day, you'd see replays on the post game shows and then maybe on the pregame for next week and that would be .

What has changed is the technology that WE the viewer has. I mean all of the different camera angles and 360 views that didn't exist ten years ago are making the average fan a professional referee. Something a guy standing in the field of play with guys getting bigger faster stronger can't possibly notice in real time. So I guess it has changed. But it's not the officiating getting worse. We just notice more.Diablo25 wrote:It actually does and has changed. A bad call (or non call in my example) is a bad call. Re: NFL 2016/2017
Disagree...to a degree. Example, NBA officials waiting to see if a shot drops before calling a foul happens ALL the time...especially if it involves a star. That didn't happen until recently in the NBA. The call I was upset with today had nothing to do with technology...multiple replays, etc. Blatant rules violation that was simply not called. Jordan Mathews' helmet had to be changed out because it was damaged so much. I've got no issue with simple misses in all sports. Its going to happen.dbdynsty25 wrote:

Re: NFL 2016/2017
7 more games of watching Jay Cutler (hopefully) and likely John Fox. If there was ever a coach mailing it in...
Aside from that I agree with Rob, the league is really awful this year.

So why wasn't this called even with a ref in clear view of the action watching it unfold? Sh*t you can speed this up x3 on instant replay and it looks the same.dbdynsty25 wrote: What has changed is the technology that WE the viewer has. Again, I f*cking get it...they miss calls. They ALWAYS HAVE. What is so hard to understand here? I'm not debating that at all!!!!Rodster wrote:So why wasn't this called even with a ref in clear view of the action watching it unfold? Re: NFL 2016/2017
But that's not the point DB. How the f*ck does the ref not see Cole Beasley's head get completely turned around? In fact the ref is standing behind both players watching the play. And yet a few plays later they get Pittsburgh for a facemask on Jason Whitten which was harder to see. So that's why some here say the NFL officiating sucks and guys like XXXIV take it a step further and say there's an agenda to some of their calls/non-calls.dbdynsty25 wrote:Again, I f*cking get it...they miss calls. Re: NFL 2016/2017
Let me ask have you ever officiated anything? Pop Warner, Little League, high school? Sitting at home with the use of technology it is easy to see calls. Real time on the field, head on a swivel trying to track everything, things get missed it is that simple. You have the luxury of a HD TV view, to sit here and say one was easier to see than the other when you're not on the field is silly at best.Rodster wrote: But that's not the point DB. There is no conspiracy despite the drunk ramblings of one of my favorite DSPers. People think there is like some pool of officials just waiting in the wings, that is not how it works. That should be evident by the strike a few years back. It takes a lot to become an official of a major sport, anyone can go look this up.
If you want to complain about inconsistency there is no defense of that because these people are human beings. One guys PI call might not be another guys.

Re: NFL 2016/2017
No but no one needs to when you see a guys head turn violently to the left and his body follows the direction his neck is going. Meanwhile the side judge is looking at both players.Danimal wrote:Let me ask have you ever officiated anything? Pop Warner, Little League, high school? Then you have Jason Whitten in a crowd and someone grabs his facemask and that gets called. So here you have one example of a flagrant facemask and the other is hard to see. The facemask in the crowd gets called but Cole Beasley's blatant facemask isn't called. That's inconsistency right there.
If there is a questionable call i'll side with the refs but something blatant should be called especially when a field judge is looking at both players involved.

Re: NFL 2016/2017
Agree. Goodell's goal for the NFL is parity, but he has been too successful at reaching that aim. The end result is mind-numbing mediocrity and some REALLY bad prime-time matchups.RobVarak wrote:This league is awful this year. Absolutely awful.
Oversaturation also is putting these lousy games into too prominent of a spotlight. The world does not need Thursday Night Football, especially when we're getting such clashes of the titans as Browns-Ravens. The world does not need NFL games on Saturdays after the college regular season ends. Even Monday Night Football should be questioned in this era.
The NFL has lost the episodic quality and sanctity of Sundays due to Thursday night games, Monday night doubleheaders to start the season, London games and bye weeks. Mix that with lousy football, and it's no wonder ratings are plummeting faster than a car driving off a cliff.
This is the first season in probably 20 years in which my interest in college football is rivaling that of the NFL. The playoff has made college football meaningful and interesting again for me.
