NBA Season 2016/17

Well the Heat continued where they left off in Orlando. They had Charlotte up by 19 late in the third and then took their foot off the gas. And you know how that turns out in the NBA. The encouraging signs are there. Babbit, Waiters, Reed, Johnson (not Tyler) can play. The problem is most of them are just 2016/17 rentals. What's fun to watch is the ball movement and chemistry between the players, believing they're not expected to do much but are trying to mesh and proving others wrong.

I'm still hoping for a lottery pick season as next year Phoenix gets Miami's pick.

That's a BIG stretch. Walton proved last year during his stint replacing Kerr that he was ready to be an NBA head coach. But Steve Kerr is still a hell of a good coach. Lest we forget that he led the Dubs to a championship in his first season on the bench.

The Dubs are struggling a bit -- at least by their standards -- for two reasons.

One, it will take time for the lineup to adjust to Durant. Remember that the "Big Three" struggled initially in Miami, and Kyrie, LeBron and Love took a while to jell in Cleveland. Two, Golden State has almost no rim protection with Bogut, Speights and Ezeli gone. Pachulia isn't that good, and McGee is nothing more than an NBA punch line.

The Lakers are coming. They're going to be very good in a few years with this core of young talent. And the improvement of the team, combined with its Hollywood location, will restore the Lakers as one of the premier free-agent destinations in the NBA despite the dysfunctional lunacy of the Buss family as owners.

Hey, I love Steve Kerr...he and his wife bought the down comforter that's on my bed this very second, but he has not proven to be a "great" coach quite yet. He was put in a very very cushy situation. Tactically, he struggles. I mean, just look at the playoffs last year. Cleveland changed their approach and he just couldn't do a damn thing about it.

The Lakers are coming. They're going to be very good in a few years with this core of young talent. I need to take a break from the NBA. The officiating in the Cavs/Sixers game was the worst that Ive seen in a long time. Brutally one sided calls gave the Cavs 9 points in the fourth period alone. Sixer lose 102-101 when Henderson gets fouled on the last play and no call. Krlie Irving literally falls on his own...foul...leads to a three instead of a change of possession. Official calls a ball out of bounds off Rodriguez's leg. Replay shows it missed his leg by nearly a foot...no reversal. God forbid the league let a game play out the way it should. f***in joke.

You could excuse officiating in soccer since there's one ref watching the action but you can't do this same when you have multiple refs on the court officiating along with replay officials monitoring the action.

Meanwhile the biggest problem with the team is being ranked last in defensive efficiency.

I said to any one of my NBA fan friends who would listen this summer that the Knicks would miss the rim protection of Robin Lopez. 'Melo never has played a lick of defense, and Noah is a shell of his one superb season. Porzingis is an offensive marvel, but he needs to improve his defense, too.

The Knicks are a mess. Fingers should point at Phil. Forget about this Triangle nonsense and get with the 21st century of basketball. His insistence to shove this antiquated offense down the team's throat is neutering Hornacek and confusing the players.

Phil is a joke of a GM. His only good decision was to draft Porzingis.

Winslow's shot looks pretty ugly.

Looked up his numbers. They're really ugly, and it's worse than his poor rookie year shooting percentages.

People thought he was a steal in that draft at #10 but if he's just going to brick shots, it's not going to be good.

Presumably he can use his athleticism to defend but you don't get picked #10 just to be a wing defender.

There's still hope for Winslow if he continues to work on his shot.

Jimmy Butler, to whom Winslow has been compared, shot .405, .467 and .397 from the field during the first three seasons of his career, never averaging more than 13 PPG. He has shot .462 and .455 in the last two seasons, increasing his scoring average to 20.0 and 20.9 PPG.

Presumably he can use his athleticism to defend but you don't get picked #10 just to be a wing defender.

But that's EXACTLY the reason Miami wanted him for. Miami is a team that puts a large emphasis on defense first. And don't forget, that when he was drafted the Heat had D-Wade and Bosh both on the team. His defensive skills are already at an All-NBA level. Miami wasn't the only team wanted Winslow. Danny Ainge had dangled a boat load of draft picks in front of Pat Riley to move up to get Winslow.

And I agree with PK that Winslow is only 20 years old so he has time to develop his shot. Last week he dropped 23 and several from behind the arc.
