NBA 2k17

Post by fletcher21 »

I noticed a month or so back that NBA 2k16 was a free download for ps plus members. I believe it was only for a short time. I downloaded it, and I became addicted to it. I hadn't played an NBA game since the ps1 days with NBA live 99 or something like that. 2k blew me away. In terms of the big 4 sports, I feel 2k is the best representation of the sport besides maybe the show.

I deleted 2k16 because I am going to wait for 2k17. It went from not even on my radar to being my most anticipated title. I'm more jacked for 2k17 than madden, which is saying a lot. I'm really glad I gave it a try. I downloaded the live 16 demo and it was a complete turd imo. I can't wait for September to arrive for this game!

Anyone here buy 2k every year like a lot of us buy madden yearly? I've read online on several sites that people claim the 2k games require multiple patches and several months until they are playable. Hopefully this game comes out of the box at least as solid as 16. If it's a huge step up, I'll be harder than Chinese arithmetic as pk says. :D

Yes. The most played game in our household, with ease. NBA 2K is the only title both of my sons play year-round, and I enjoy a game from time to time, too.

I've been buying and playing NBA 2K every year since 2005. Its my favorite sports game.

Some earlier versions had issues, specially online, and needed patches. 2K16 was solid from day 1.

Played the shortened first season & complete second season of my player. I'm currently on my 3rd season. It's one of my favorite sports games over the past few years.

I'd buy NBA 2k over Madden every day of the week. Easily my second most anticipated yearly title behind MLB The Show. I probably even play it more than The Show.

Agreed. Well, it's probably my 3rd most anticipated behind The Show and NHL. Madden looks like it has improved over the past few years but I still haven't bought it. I've been playing 2k16 the past few days wetting my appetite. Hell, my Sixers will at least have some players to work with this year.

The NBA 2K series is heads and shoulders above the sports competition as a complete package. The Show is right behind.

Diablo, I hope this is finally the year that Embiid is healthy and lives up to his contract. They've got some good, young talent.

Embiid IS finally healthy. He has a few workout vids on his Twitter and Instagram accounts and he's a beast. Great footwork, soft jumpers, awesome post moves (Hakeem like) and power dunks. He could be something special.

This is the first NBA 2k game I've started playing and said, meh...and I'm not instantly blow away by. The control seems to be a lot looser and the shooting is way more generic as far as each guys motion and timing...maybe I just need to get used to it. I mean it's still awesome, but I'm just now blown away by the full version quite yet.

Thanks for the feedback. Disappointed to hear about the generic shooting, but I'm pleased to hear about the looser gameplay.

I always thought movement on the floor was a bit stiff in prior 2K games and didn't quite capture the fluidity of the incredible athletes in the NBA. I don't want NBA Live or NBA Jam, but I would like a little more butter in the player physics model. :)

I haven't picked up the game yet, but I noticed that as well in the prelude. The controls felt very loose. Definitely will take some time to get used to. Is there an option with changing the shooting?

After playing some more, it's not as if the shooting is generic, it's just the range of differences isn't as great as before. Taking guys like Curry and his quick release and contrasting that with someone like Bledsoe (a long release) was extremely difficult to get used to back to back. Now that gap has shrunk so it's easier to go from team to team. I suppose that was on purpose so it was a little easier to play w/ different teams but I appreciated the difficulty.

And yes, the looseness of the controls is apparent, but I'm getting used to it and I'm actually starting to dig it a bit. The ball definitely feels more organic and it's not as tied to players are it has been in the past...kind of like the advances we're seeing in the soccer titles.

What about the dribbling animations? Does there seem to be more control? Last year, it seemed as if there was a little bit of a delay getting started.

About the same responsiveness. Off the ball is where it feels quite a bit different...defensively.

Not sure if you guys saw this. Looks pretty cool.

I have the PS3 version and I don't think this is available for that.

Decided to pick up the game last night rather than waiting for a sale. Wow, I'm glad I did. Out of the box, this game is a lot of fun!

The game plays fast, and I'll probably have to turn down the game speed eventually but I love it at the moment.

If you watch any gameplay videos, it might be hard to tell a difference between 16 and 17. However, once you start playing, there's a pretty noticeable difference in my opinion. Everything just feels more responsive. Passes are quick, allowing you to find the open player more easily than in '16. Your CPU teammates are quick with put backs. Fast breaks feel fast. I'm not jamming on the right trigger to start my dribbling animations. It just feels right and the game play is smooth.

Help side defense is improved, but not perfect.

I'm not yet sold on the new shooting mechanic, but it does seem simpler to press down on the right stick and release. I'll probably still use the buttons out of habit. Also, the semi-circle below the player with the ball is a little distracting to me, so I turned it off at half. It did have a little effect on my shooting percentage, but I'd rather have a clean looking screen.

Special dribble moves has changed this year. A little strange moving the right stick left and right or diagonal. I've had an instance or two where I shot the ball when I mean to try and create something off the dribble. It's awkward, but I can see what they're trying to accomplish. Eventually, I think I'll just get used to it.

I played using the Spurs against the Knicks in SA, and I throttled NY with threes. Most of my points came from the 3 ball, but also got quite a few buckets from hustle plays from Gasol with put backs and rebounds. Aldridge also was pretty potent down low. I ended up winning pretty easily by 15 points. NY made a couple 8-0 and 10-0 runs, but I never felt that the CPU was cheating. Perhaps the Knicks took too many threes themselves, but it was nice to see some mid range jumpers.

Porzingis blocked one of my shots and it went all the way down to the other side of the court. Pretty awesome to see.

Out of the box, it doesn't seem that offensive rebounds favor the CPU like in year's past. I've always had to turn that down.

The new substitution method will definitely get some getting used to. At the moment, it's a little difficult to figure out. It's nice to have all these options, but maybe it's a little overkill. Also, in my play now game, it was a little strange that the Spurs assistant did all the coaching during the timeouts. It's a new feature and it's pretty cool to hear him discussing strategies, but shouldn't Popovich be in the huddle?

Little thing, but love the hearing the ref's voice calling out a foul or how many free throws the player is taking.

The pre-game show is hilarious as ever. In my game, David Aldridge was the floor reporter and sounded very smooth. Haven't heard Doris Burke or Chris Webber yet. Very cool having some different broadcast crews.

The game is bright and looks really nice. Maybe the players have a little too much shine to them. It's all preference though. I think the lighting is great. There's still some noticeable clipping here and there.

All in all, a very good first impression. Can't wait to play more this evening.

How big of an upgrade is this to 16? I still haven't picked it up. My gaming time is limited, and I'm deep into dirt rally and Madden. 16 is a fun game and looks great. Does 17 change the game like Madden did this year, or is it more of a bump in graphics and updated rosters? Dream team and being able to move franchises means nothing to me, and I know those were 2 big selling point this year. I just want a fun game. If it's only a small step up I'll wait for a price drop.

Small step IMO...in fact, I'm almost partial to 16 with the changes to the physics and momentum...it's just way too loose this year. I'm gonna have to try to adjust some of the sliders to see if I can get it more controllable. After about a dozen games or so, my feelings are the still the same as the first time I played it.
