Glad it helped! And I know everybody has different driving styles...when guys are really aggressive attacking a course, sometimes they like more dead zone and quicker response.

Others prefer to be smooth, with tiny adjustments on the stick to alter course. It helps if you want to try to maintain a line at all costs, at the danger of increased fishtailing like that. I definitely fall into the latter category, but it definitely takes an adjustment at first. After a while, however, it's MUCH easier to keep the car balanced, weight-wise. I've never seen a console game that demands as much control over the weight balance as this one. But again, I don't know what the settings were out of the box, but they felt great to me.

Nothing like making my inaugural Dirt Rally debut in the snow. Game controls really different from the PC w/ the XBox 360 controller to the Xbox One so I struggled mightily without any practice time before jumping in. That was a mistake, lol.

I'm def in the latter camp when it comes to over correcting. I was all over the place trying to get my bearings and correct mistakes. Might need to turn down the sensitivity a smidge.

I left all my controls at default, using a controller with behind the car view. I was watching some of the tutorial videos in the game and what they are saying makes sense but applying it when racing for me is another story.

Speaking of gamepad parameters, this always makes me scratch my head:

"Low linearity makes steering directly proportional to your input which can feel more consistent but sensitive".

WHAT???? Wouldn't HIGHER linearity mean directly proportional??? What does linear mean here if not directly proportional? More means less???

"High linearity can make the steering feel less sensitive for small inputs but can feel inconsistent"

See above...WTH???

I actually did some experimenting last night and found it was easier to keep the car straight at high speeds with a higher linearity setting...but what do I know, this description makes NO sense to me.

Glad you are not the only one. I don't know what the default settings are, but I had it at 20. Based on the narrowly snowy conditions in Sweden who wouldn't want to keep their car as straight as possible? So based on the game settings description I went down to 10 initially, then to 5 and I was all over the place.

I think I'll bring the linearity back up to 20 after all. And I know some of you mentioned about NOT playing too much with the default settings but for those that did, where is the option to bring back the original control settings?

Here's how a middle-of-the-packer does it!!!

You need to skip to about the 1:30 mark before I actually get started. I started out pretty good for me, but you can see the later third or so my ADD (read: beer) kicks in. It carried over to stage 2, unfortunately for me. I'll try to get the rest in tonight, as I'm headed out of town first thing in the morning and won't be back until late Sunday.

Beer will KILL your stage times :)

I found that out the hard way last rally. I don't know if anyone else can do it, but without being really super-sharp and alert I just can't get through a stage without a monumental oh-s**t moment.

Lost a lot of time on stage 2 with a couple of spin outs, and had another one later in another stage, but overall just a slow-and-steady-try-not-to-wreck rally.

I hate snow.

You make it look so easy. I twitch all over the place with the controller...... sigh.

If I get the promotion at work i've been trying for since the winter, i might treat myself to a wheel and a wheel stand so i can drive from my couch in comfort while probably shaving 5 minutes off each stage time. Sad, but probably true!

Did you and XXXIV give up already?

Bumping my original question, for those that haven't tinkered with the settings what are the original default advanced controller settings?

So, riding on rims doesn't work so well. Stage 3 I ran into a little trouble...Literally.
Still have the last 2 stages to complete. I think I need to practice. Hehe

I think of you boys as more like oil and vinegar. :P

50 meters to go stage four at night in the snow I spun out, freaked out, couldn't straighten out and then finally went wrong way. How its done!

I am having fun doing this.

I got a pair of these btw.

https://www.amazon.com/Speed-Freek-Apex ... reek+speed

I will go on record as fully endorsing this as an inexpensive alternative to a wheel. I noticed using this that the car felt much more 'stable'. Little corrections didn't destabilize the car. It was also easier to hold the car during curves.

Basically it took out some of the "I can't keep this car under me!!" pucker factor out and allowed me to attack the stages more confidently. We'll see what it does to next week's times, but I have to say, if you want to feel more 'comfortable' with a gamepad and DiRT Rally and have $15, this is a way to go.
