DSP "CMR2/Sports Reviewers Memorial" DiRT Rally Championship Season 2

6 weeks, Mon - Sun starting today. 1 six stage rally per week.

The weekly rally will start on Monday at 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Savings time and end at 3:00 am Eastern Daylight Savings the following Monday. However, it is going to appear that it is available until 11:45am on Monday. So, it is by DSP gentleman's agreement that I ask that no one posts any times after Monday morning 3:00am EDT for the previous weeks rally. This will give me time to screenshot all the results and stages and then put the times into Excel or Google Sheets. Feel free to use whatever assists you want, as this is just for fun anyway. However, it would be helpful for everyone to post what settings they are using, controller preference, FFB settings. Anything that would be worth sharing.

For this six week championship we will be using the Modern Rally Cars (2010's) for the entire season. However, from week to week we will use a tier handicapping based on where you placed in the previous rally to determine the cars you may select. If you miss a week, it will always be based on the results of your previous rally. If you are brand new to the league, you will always start with no limitations. However, for this first week, no one gets to use the VW Polo so we start out somewhat even.

Tier 1: Volkswagen Polo Rally
Tier 2: Mini Countryman Rally Edition, Ford Fiesta RS Rally
Tier 3: Hyundai Rally

-Top 25 % from previous week must use Tier 3 - Hyundai Rally
-Middle 50% may use Tier 2 or Tier 3
-Bottom 25% may use Tier 1 (Volkswagen Polo Rally), Tier 2, or Tier 3

For this season we will do Route 2 of the 6 main rally locations and I have tried to mix up the long and short stages, reverse stages, conditions, etc. to be a little less formulaic.

Global Settings for each week:
Event gamemode: Rally
Stage Retry: No
Event Restart: No
Owned Vehicles: No
Career Engineers: No
Service Area at Stage 3 and Stage 5
Checkpoints at each Stage

Sign up for the league here if you have not already:

Ran a decent run this time. Took it easy, didn't push it too much, and only had one spot where I cut a hairpin too close and hit the nose on the curb, had to back it up. Other than that, I don't recall any really horrendous mess-ups.

No dice for me this week. Busy as f*ck with work and home, heading to Montreal to work the Canadian Grand Prix tomorrow morning.

Thanks again for setting this up, The Donald!

I had a disastrous stage 4. Otherwise not terrible runs, but not Terry calibre. I think I'm downshifting too aggressively before turns and maybe dropping one more year than I should. I just hate it when the revs drop too low or I lose boost. Oh and hairpins hate me.

I generally feel the same way in most games, but in something like Dirt Rally, when you have a lower gear on exit and you stab the gas, you break traction (or you could end up inducing oversteer on the EXIT of a corner, which will lose a ton of time). I've sort of come to the belief that I'd rather take almost everything other than Acute turns in 2nd gear. It sounds funky, it sort of bogs out, but it's got smooth acceleration as least, and no loss of traction on exit.

I hear you, though. It's almost counter-intuitive to me. I want to hear the engine screaming and be in the power band, but how much of a yo-yo did I do to slow down so much for the lower gear, and then not accelerate without breaking traction quickly enough to get back up to speed? If I leave the engine a little too low on the revs, I don't slow down as much, and don't end up breaking momentum nearly as much. Over the course of 100 or 200 turns, that adds up big time.

You're right, of course. It's almost an instinct I have to crack down on. Not always, but often, about the same time my left finger goes for the break, I'm ready to start downshifting, and I could probably do less of that.

In addition, there's that 'fear' that if I don't downshift, I'll sail around the turn too fast. It's almost like the gearing is a 'governor'. Just bad habits I need to break, if I'm going to get faster.

Btw, the call for "left 2" early in stage 4 is late. yow. It's "crest 6"...silence" left 2" and if you aren't already slowing down you're going to clock the rocks on the right side of the road. Ouch!

Great job, as usual, Terry. You are one hell of a rabbit to chase.

I know exactly what you mean. If anything, I try to keep the car 'balanced' and never pushing the speed to the absolute limit. I tried that one time last season (Rally 6), and ended up with 3 penalties and losing by a bunch of time to Fshguy. I'd much rather lose a bit of time getting into a corner than coming out, for sure.

And...YES! I forget what that was, I think it was "5 left into 1 right" and it said 1 right as I could see the cliff coming toward me, locking up all 4 tires and sliding the left sides into the concrete for a nice little brush. Most of the time the co-pilot is good, but in some of those cases you're guaranteed to be screwed if you push it and try to attack the course.

This is on sale on Steam. As a guy who isn't really good at driving games and had no wheel for the PC should I consider this? Is it fun even if you're challenged?

Avoid it like the plague.

There's a lot of wonderful things that it is, but forgiving or fun for casual racers isn't one of them.
