Dark Souls 3

Post by XXXIV »

First impression after 5 days screwing around and getting killed. YES!

Best ever Souls game. Though It could still be the worst. Early. :P

I can say its pure souls from the first Demons on the PS to Dark for everyone. Refined. Better. Bigger.

All that was great is in this game. So far its like an all star souls game.

I have played through all of them at least once and this one is the sweetest at this early point.

Killing the first two bosses. Ya Im a Greek geek so what ? 8)

Had a hard time with pointing....

I would have been all over this game if not for Bloodborne. I tried getting into Dark Souls I again and I kept comparing it to Bloodborne.

DS III does look cool, though. You must be a badass playing this game because all i've read is how tough all the bosses are.

All of the Souls games are basically this: if you're not afraid to die, and you don't get frustrated trying and re-trying things, it's not "hard". It's just a learning experience. I am fine for a while, and then somewhere along the way I get tired of fighting <insert boss name here> for the 10th time, giving up and meaning to come back to it...and then I never do.

For the record, though, I think Dark Souls 3 is the best souls game to date. It's like a mix between Bloodborne's pace and the "older" Souls' pace. Combat is faster, but not as fast as BB.

And I have no idea if the "Ashen Estus Flask" ever existed in the game, but that is a GAME CHANGER. Being able to refill your mana in between bonfire rests is massive. And giving you the option at the smith to set your ratio? (I want 1 estus flask and 3 ashen estus flask, or 2 and 2, etc.) is a stroke of genius. I've never used Magic in a souls game, but because of that Ashen Estus flask I ended up rolling a deprived and he's not a jack of all trades character that can handle most situations adequately, but none of them exceptionally

And they seem to have learned from BB in other ways--they throw more enemies at you per encounter in this one, but they're easier to kill. Usually a one hit with a good melee character, but they might have a shielded or heavily armored enemy mixed in, or a caster up high (or archer shooting sh*t at you).

Honestly, I think it's like they took everything they've learned over the years and made the super-game. It's incredible.

It's been awhile since I purchased a console game.. but I think this will be the next one. I have a week off the first week in May, so would be a good time for it!

Terry you are spot on.

The ashen flask never existed at least I never saw it. I have not used it yet as where you allocate at Andre the smitty I have all my flasks as estus.

I never played BB but I agree best Souls. Just something so awesome when you beat a boss, mini boss or an area for the first time.

Also some thing very cool about wondering what the bastards at FROM have planned for you around the next corner. Even with all the time I spent with the previous Souls games, the bastards have still gotten me a few times. I go super slow as I have learned but I still have those I didnt see that coming moment.

Absolutely. I've had a few scenarios where dudes were climbing over walls but I didn't see them until they backstabbed me (usually mid-fight with something else). And their enemy positioning is master-level stuff. I think it's safe, and there's a dude just hidden out of sight far enough that when I scanned that section of the room, I missed him.

They don't go full-d*ck mode, though. The 'glow' around guys on the ground that are obvious enemies is nice, and everything they do is to slow you down and not allow you to succeed trying to go full Rambo, though.

I sat my cousin down to try it yesterday, as he's never played a Souls game. I explained it to him, what it was like, and immediately I just hear "CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK" as he's spamming the right bumper. A quick death later (to like the first group of mobs in the tutorial area haha), I gently tell him "that won't work. Study the enemies, wait for openings...".

Before long, he's rolling out of the way, managing stamina, beat a boss, progressed through the first 2 or 3 zones. It fully had its hooks into him by that point.

He mentioned that he felt more of a sense of accomplishment in that game than in any other game he's played. I could hear him dying by the bunch, but he kept at it and was almost late leaving to get his boys back to their mom's house. It was pretty funny, but they made another fan in the span of one afternoon.

My son and I played co-op in this for hours last night. It almost feels like cheating, though. You can summon a friend like in Bloodborne, and they stay with you all the way through the boss of that zone. Then you can just summon them again.

We both started as deprived and worked our way solo past the first boss and first couple of areas until you could summon. Then, once we did, we were unstoppable. It's crazy how much the game changes with another player. We even got invaded once and barely paid them any attention. They'd come up, take a slash at him, and I'd back stab them. You could see the "oh sh*t!!!!" moment as they rolled around like a spaz. We'd jack them up until they had to run away, then we'd continue on our merry way.

In another fight a little later, they'd pop back up. We kept kicking their ass until they had to run, and eventually I let them run down a hall way and did the sniper shot with the bow to end their misery.

Played all night, knocked down another boss, explored more areas...game is absolutely awesome, and in co-op it's much less tense, which might not be a good thing--it's not "Souls" like that, but it's certainly less stressful and a hell of a lot of fun.

Bloodborne is the same way if you level up too much/grind, it also starts to get easier. I love the tense part about these types of games. Especially when arriving at a new area like in Bloodborne where you see for the first time the 20ft cathedral guards with their massive axe and say, oh sh*t, I think i'll approach this carefully.

PC version works, but it's been years since I've had PC problems. And lately I've had this random explorer crash, where the entire rig is just dead. No right click submenus, no CTRL+ALT+DEL, no forced logoff, nothing works. I have to reset it.

This only started recently, so maybe it's because of DS3? I haven't tried playing much else lately on PC, so tough for me to say. If that's the kind of stuff they were describing, then that's a problem. For example, last time I saw it I was running through an area and all of the ground textures were sort of half-loaded. I could run back and forth, but a boss was missing. I tried to quit and the button depressed and it acted like it was going to quit, but nothing happened. Couldn't ALT+Tab, couldn't do much of anything.

So considering all of that is happening on a machine that's been problem free for 2 years....probably not a good sign.

I don't understand all the items in the game so I'm sure I'm trying to beat these bosses or whatever with crappy gear. Baby steps though!

Guys have beaten the game with nothing but their fists.

The items don't make nearly as much of a difference as skill does...learn the patterns, learn that "dodging as late as possible" is winning. Know when to not take that last swing, and when to roll twice. Even if you have a hair of stamina left, you can roll again. Sometimes that's the difference between winning the battle or losing half of your health in one swing.

Honestly, I think I used a starter weapon through level 50 or something. Although I DID get Titanite Shards and continually upgrade it at the blacksmith in Fire Link Shrine. And before you do that, get a raw gem and up the damage. But even with an unmodified starter weapon you can take out the first 3 or 4 bosses without much trouble. It's more about not getting hit than doing a bunch of damage per hit.

Terry is right on.

Better gear does a have a placebo effect but if you start as a knight you wont find better armor for a while and when you do it wont be much better. Especially since in this game armor is no longer upgradeable. You can be killed by pretty much anything wearing anything if you are not tuned in.
I have switched it up for certain areas and battles for higher resistances to poison and magic but that comes with drops in physical D.
Rolling is your best friend so make sure your geared at under 70% to avoid that heavy roll.

Same thing applies to the knight weapon though you can get that katana Im using pretty early on. Again its stats are not that much better and many players would just keep using the long sword over it.

I have learned the best play style over the previous three games (Including Demon Souls ) is to get in and out fast as I can. I use dex as My main stat which makes the katana my friend. Though with the new gemming system, I think you can make any weapon any type.

I also pump points into endurance to give that extra swing which may save your life.

I have had my hollowing up to 99 for a while now so dying is my secondary strategy. Once you commit to it you will gain a new perspective.
