It's 2010. Peyton Manning is the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and it's Super Bowl XLIV against the New Orleans Saints.

Peyton and the Colts lose the game 31-17.

With time still remaining on the clock, Peyton did something that Cam Newton (or any black quarterback for that matter) would have been absolutely skewered for — he left the field.

He didn't congratulate the opposing quarterback Drew Brees, as is customary. He didn't shake any hands. He didn't try to smile. He just bailed.

Here's how Chris Chase, of Yahoo Sports recalled it in an article entitled, "Peyton Manning storms off Super Bowl field. Is he a poor sport?"

"Peyton Manning didn't shake hands with New Orleans Saints players after his Indianapolis Colts lost 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV. Apparently some think this is a sign of poor sportsmanship from the NFL's greatest player. It's not.

Walking off the field without congratulating Drew Brees may go against our misguided notion of what sportsmanship should be, but it wasn't at all disrespectful or bitter. It shows how much Peyton Manning wanted to win the game. And who can argue about that?"

You see, it was the competitive fire of Peyton Manning that caused him to leave the field before time expired without shaking any hands or offering any congratulatory hugs to the opposing team and staff.
Never mind the fact that after the game, in which Cam was sacked and mollywhopped all night long, he went and found Peyton Manning, flashed him a genuine smile, looked him in his eyes, shook his hand, and congratulated him. That didn't really get reported though did it?

Instead, Cam gets a treatment from pundits and retired players alike that is altogether different than what Peyton Manning received six years ago.

Ignoring the warm gesture Cam offered Peyton, former Bronco Bill Romanowski went straight for the racist use of the word "boy" in a now deleted tweet saying, "You'll never last in the NFL with that attitude. The world doesn't revolve around you, boy!"

Conservative superhero Glenn Beck was also deeply troubled by Cam Newton and decided it was worth taking to Facebook over. He declared:

"Cam has obviously not learned how to lose with grace. I wish I could show my children how to behave after a loss but unfortunately I can't.

This is not the behavior of someone who lost the game. This is the behavior of a loser."

Over 15,000 people liked Beck's statement.

So that has what bearing on him not going after his fumble?

The varying reactions of the starting quarterbacks on the losing sides of the last two Super Bowls. And Wilson's loss was FAR more devastating, by the way:

So you can bury the race card right back into the deck where it belongs. Thank you.

Listen, I don't think anyone here is a bigot. I'm talking about a far more subtle issue of white privilege. The media is handling Cam differently than other white QB's that acted like babies at the end of losing games. I thin it is good to be aware of it.

And bringing up Wilson in this situation not only misses the point, but veers pretty close to :Russell wilson is one of the "good ones." No one is arguing that Cam should have acted like a baby at the end of the game. The argument is that when Peyton was a baby, it was that he just cared so much and was so competitive. With Cam, it's more like, "f*** that guy."

It was worth pointing out, but I'm not going to make this an issue. The article stands on its own. And whether people accept it or not is not a big deal to me. Like I said, I'm not saying anyone here is a bigot, or should feel bad. I'm also willing to admit I could be totally wrong. I do think it is an issue worth pointing out and letting people work through on their own.

Anybody else notice him grabbing his left shoulder a lot in the second half? Guarantee you the guy was playing pretty hurt. I'm more inclined to believe he thought about not being able to finish the game if he dove in there with cracked ribs or something. Nothing from Cam Newton's body of work has made me think he's not tough or won't do anything to win a game--I think it was more about survival at that point. You can see him think about it, then he stops.

Just my 2 (meaningless) cents.

Yeah, that fumble looked bad, but Cam runs into defenders left and right. He usually seems to thrive on physical play. Whether he was hurt or shell-shocked, the dude wasn't right.

If he was a Rams you know how Id be but he is not and I could care less that he quit on that play and the game.

He is the one who has to live with it.

I am sure he will get passed it.

I wont be surprised to see The Panthers back to the super bowl next year.

I said the exact same thing when they showed the replay the first time. I told my buddy, "He's got the 1000 yard stare," when he was on the ground looking at the ball. I don't think he was mentally weak or scared or anything else. Shell shock is real and it's a b#tch.

I was reading the story on how Cap wants out of the bay, who can blame him with Kelly there now. However this line made me spit out my drink.

"Kap's really good," Kelly said. "I mean, he had the ball on the 5-yard line [about] ... to win a Super Bowl. You can just look at the tape to see how talented he is. You know, our job is acquiring talent, not getting rid of talent."

I love that Tomlin basically told his Williams to STFU up on twitter about Manning. I'm not a fan of all of the Steeler players but I sure as hell love their coach.

FA is already going nuts with Denver losing Brock Osweiler to the Texans for $72 million for 4 years. The Dolphins lost Lamar Miller and Olivier Vernon. I hope they can let Wake finish his career in Miami. They also released Brent Grimes, his nutty wife didn't help his cause either.

I can't believe Osweiler is getting that kind of money. Is he good, or is he Matt Cassel, Part II? Big gamble by Houston. Elway knows QBs, and he didn't seem too torn up about losing Big Brock.

Forte is a unique talent with his receiving skills. But it's stupid to pay good money to anyone but elite backs these days, especially to any back over 30. The running game is de-emphasized in the NFL, and many teams have created perfectly functioning running games around non-marquee backs.

The Dolphins have been idiots so far, and I love it. Mario Williams is incredibly overrated, and Kiko Alonso is an injury waiting to happen. Trading away two first-round picks for Maxwell and Alonso -- both very diminished players -- is a panic move.

Best signing so far is Alex Mack by the Falcons. That guy can be an anchor for the Birds' O line for a while.

I know you don't win Super Bowls through Free Agency, but it's been a long time since the Raiders have been an attractive destination for the 'big names". Kelechi Osemele, Bruce Irvin, and now Sean Smith signed deals in the first 2 days. That's 3 of the 4 biggest needs that they had in FA, with Safety being the only other one. Osemele at Tackle is a little weird if he only started 4 games there, but he's obviously the best OL on the market. He'd be overpaid as a guard, but with him, Gabe Jackson, and Rodney Hudson, that would be a filthy interior line for the running game.

They needed a good man/press corner, and Sean Smith was #1 on my wish list all offseason. The Chiefs allowed 30+ points in 2 of the 4 games he missed, and then he returns and they allowed more than 20 points once the rest of the season. That's not an accident. Marcus Peters is he bigger playmaker, but also the bigger risk taker in that secondary.

Bruce Irvin playing opposite Khalil Mack (and if they get Aldon Smith back, since he said he's only interested in playing for the Raiders when he returns...money talks, though), this team is going to be dangerous next season. They were missing a few pieces last year (cornerback, mainly), but I haven't seen the big FAs flock to Oakland like this in a long time.

If Weddle signs, I'm all in for Oakland to make it to the postseason in 2016. There's a big plate of crow waiting for me at the end of the year if they don't!

Mike Tannenbaum, nuff said. The guy screwed up the Jets along with Dawn Aponte and look where they're at? That's right, Miami. :P

The Dolphins salary cap became a joke when he signed Suh who pretty much was a non-factor last year. They let Olivier Vernon go in his prime and signed an unproductive Super Mario.
