It was goaltending some years, mental implosions other years IMO.

I think the consensus is that their massively downgraded defense can't get the forwards the puck in good positions. That will happen when you swap Ehrhoff, Martin, and Despres, all good skaters, for Dumoulin, Cole and Lovejoy.

Jake Allen has really taken over as the Blues top goalie. Fantastic night in goal last night vs the Preds.

Flyers battle back to get a point last night. They had 2 chances at winning it in the shootout but Lawton and Read just couldn't get it done. Mason was stellar. Neuvirth and Mason are a heck of a goalie tandem right now. I love the direction Hakstol has the team going. Voracek looks like he's finally finding his stride. I love Gostisbehere. So nice to watch a young, skilled, clever defenseman for the good guys.

Blues appear to be in preliminary talks regarding a deal for Stamkos.

Secondly, after Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman attended Thursday's game, Lightning assistant GM Pat Verbeek was here today. Fairly significant.

Interesting! Any news on potential trade pieces? Paul Stastny and other pieces maybe?

Nothing yet and I think for the Blues to get seriously involved here they would have to work something out with Stamkos signing a contract extension before obviously giving up the farm. If that contract extension were to happen, I would imagine that any deal would start with Shattenkirk as the main piece for Tampa. Maybe Lehtera if Tampa wants somebody that's got some term on his current deal, then I would imagine a 1st round pick and prospect would be included.
If Stamkos is nothing more than a rental, then there is no way they would deal Shattenkirk or give up the farm. Blues have a bit of a problem because Shattenkirk's contract is up after next season and he's looking like he's going to get something in the 7/$49 mil range at this point. Not sure they will want to pay him market value when we already have Pietrangelo and Parayko on the right side as well. Parayko is a complete stud and they are trying to find a way to get him more minutes. I love Shatty as a player, my favorite Blue and he's our best offensive dman by far but we have a lot of good young dmen in the pipeline that might be able to replace Shatty's minutes down the road. Blues need somebody upfront besides Tarasenko that can put the puck in the net on a consistent basis though so no surprise they are kicking the tires here.

Canucks end their six road games trip with a gritty win beating The Bolts 2-1. Not just trying to beat the home team but obviously also against the 10, count them 10 penalties called against them compared to just one PP for VAN. That's over 18 minutes of PP for Stamkos team. Ridiculous calls, but despite doing poorly in this trip they go to the xmas break with a W and hopefully pray that some of the injured to get better fast.

Wait until you see Sanheim and Konecny next year. Both of who you can see starting Saturday in the WJC's if you have access to NHL network or hockeytreams.com. Flyers have some amazing talent on the horizon.
The WJC is my favorite hockey!

Always exciting games among both NA countries, just unusual to see them this early in the round.

Canucks-Oilers is about to start. My buddy and I are about 40' from the ice. Good view to watch some young kids in action as VAN has 7 regulars out of the lineup. Ridiculous.

Thanks. I did. When the only blueline name you recognize is Alex Edler and maybe depth man B. Bartkowsky, the depleted Canucks team looked ready for some beating at the hands of the Oilers a team that has been improving this season. With practically half of the team nursing injuries, things could have gone sideways, fast, but they woke up in the second period after trailing 0-1 and started to play much better. Despite the low scoring affair, it was a non-stop north south action game that hit its pinnacle in OT with the 3 on 3.

And just as when we reminded each other of Canucks' frugality in the OT games, it finally happened. On the eight try of pond hockey J.Hansen who five minutes earlier was cut badly when he hit some heavy metal crossbar, beat Talbot with a slapper which included an assist from J. Markstrom. (Miller's back up).

The schedule has been brutal for this team, but they finally will be home for the the next 10 days with a more friendly home schedule for the second half of the season.

At this juncture of the season it matters to me more that they compete, even with everyone healthy this team is just good enough to fight for the final spot in the playoffs and that's pretty much it.

But as it is today, they only have one line going that may get the opponents' attention.

I am still wondering how an obvious elbow to the head of H. Sedin courtesy of McNabb in the first 30 seconds of the game went undetected by the zebras. A couple of fights already, this is going to get ugly. Screw the Kings.
