Alright I was able to cancel my order. I'll wait to see what the new phones are like. I may regret this decision, lol.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Picked up a OnePlus 2 the other day on a whim. What an improvement over the One. Still not quite good enough for me to actually keep it compared to my Note 5 but it's damn close. And the Note is a 700 dollar phone compared to one that's 400 and that's really saying something.
Positives:
Build quality is top notch. The sandstone back is improved over last yes and the metal frame really makes it feel much better than last years. Got a good heft to it without feeling too heavy.
The software is near stock android with a few tweaks. No complaints here at all. It's my preference for sure.
The camera is much improved. Still can't hang with the two big boy cameras on the Samsung and LGs of the world but still really really good.
Battery life is great...better than any other phone I've used this year.
Negatives (also known as my deal breakers)
Screen is great if it was 2014...just not good enough when I'm used to the best screen in mobile on the Note 5. Just seems washed out and obviously it's lower resolution too but that's not that big of a deal. If I didn't have the comparison I'd likely be happy w it.
USB Type C is a joke. They sacrificed fast charging (the chipset supports it) for a line item on a spec sheet. Having to buy all new cables and adapters without much of a convenience upgrade is stupid. I got used to fast charging on my last few phones and even some built in wireless w the Samsungs so this is actually my biggest gripe. It's my own fault and I knew this would be an issue but not sure why it bothers me so much. Maybe it's because it really is a line item on a spec sheet (first phone w type C) instead of being something practical and useful.
The camera is also another thing that falls down here but only because of the competition that's in my house at the same time. Camera just is a little slow and bare bones compared to the Note 5 but again...the phone is nearly half the price.
So to recap...if you need a budget phone that does nearly everything right you cannot go wrong with a OnePlus 2. Still a pain in the ass to get one but if you just buy an invite off eBay for 15-20 bucks you can order it no problem. I had a buddy get some invites so I had him just pick it up for me.
All that said if anyone wants my absolutely mint one...I'm willing to negotiate. It'll probably hit eBay in the next couple days or so.
Now bring on the 29th so we can see what Google has up their sleeves.

Btw...see my review above. The OnePlus 2 destroys the Nexus 6 in almost every area for essentially the same price. Soooo good decision to cancel the order.Rodster wrote:Alright I was able to cancel my order. I'll wait to see what the new phones are like. I may regret this decision, lol.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
The OnePlus 2 is now gone and it's been replaced with a Moto X Pure Edition (2015). Such an improvement from a speed and screen point of view. Really sad that OnePlus' second effort was so lackluster. This Moto is legit though...last years 2014 version was my favorite phone of the year, this one is a bit too big, but otherwise is a damn fine upgrade.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
The new Nexus phones...hell yes. 6P on it's way (late October tho, ugh).
The 5X looks great for a budget phone...but you know me, I can't roll with a budget phone, so 6P it is.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Fellas. Today I dropped my Moto X (2014) and cracked the screen. I've never pulled this smooth move before so I'm not sure what to do. The crack isn't huge.. Maybe 2-2.5 inches diagonal across the top 1/3 of the device. The phone appears to be working fine but I can't stand looking at that crack. Motorola can send me a replacement device for $125 or I can try to deal with it until I upgrade down the road... but I tend to keep my devices quite a while. Does anyone have any feedback on Motorola replacement devices or have suggest another option?
Thanks.
Dave

Re: OT:Smart Phones
I had to have a Moto X 2014 replaced when I first got mine and it was flawless. Looked brand new near as I could tell.
I also had a Moto 360 watch replaced after about 8 months as the screen started turning purple. They swapped it out right away and the "refurbished" replacement looked brand new.
So two devices, two perfect transactions. I'd say for 125 bucks to get a "new" refurb is a good deal and I'd take them up on the offer.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Yes I did. And it's by far the best Android phone to date. Everything about it is absolutely fantastic. The size is really the only marginal complaint I can come up with. It's built great, sounds good, great screen, great camera, very good battery life, ridiculously fast and stock android. I really can't recommend it highly enough, especially at 499. It's a damn steal.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:DB,

Two buddies got 5Xs because they didn't want the bigger device. Both regret it. I've played with them a bit and I was definitely underwhelmed. Battery life and occasional slow down are the main reasons. I'm sure the slowdown will be resolved with an update or two. It's a nice phone, but the 6P is much better overall.

Assuming you can deal with the size, it's nearly the perfect phone. Seriously. I love this thing. You're going to be really happy w/ it.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:Finally pulled the trigger on a 6P.

Already handled a 6p from a co-worker and it's not that much bigger than my current OnePlus One so I should be ok.

Amazon dropped the price for the Nexus 6 for $199 for BF. I couldn't pass it up at that price.

Too much. Thing is just way too wide. Get a 5X for $350 instead.Rodster wrote:Amazon dropped the price for the Nexus 6 for $199 for BF. I couldn't pass it up at that price.

The Nexus 6 is one badass phone, love it and I don't see what's the big deal with the size.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Rods,
For $200 the N6 is a no-brainer if you can handle the size.
That phone will still be supported by Google for at least 2 more years.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Yeah I have NO problems with the size. In fact I find it the perfect size for a phone. I thought Google was only doing two OS updates from the release year of their phones? It shipped with Lollipop and I thought after next years OS update that would be it. My Nexus 4 was cutoff at Lollipop but they are still doing security updates.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:Rods,

Apple is the best wrt OS updates. The iPad 2 has even gotten iOS 9 and I wouldn't be surprised if it were get iOS 10.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
DB,
I finally got my 6p last night and as soon as I opened it I noticed a yellow tint on white backgrounds.
It's pretty noticeable specially when I compere it to the Oneplus One side by side.
Here are both side by side .

Have you noticed this on yours?
It's really annoying and I don't want to ask for a replacement if this is just the norm on the 6p.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
OLED vs. LCD. Some are worse than others, but yes, it's just part of the screen tech. And the OnePlus screens are OVERLY white BTW...more of a blueish tint. So you're really talking about both ends of the color spectrum. The screen tech and color gamuts couldn't be more different.
Re: OT:Smart Phones
I had Amazon replace my N6 because the lower half of the screen had a noticeable pinkish tint. The replacement looks solid, no issues with the display.

That's what I thought, but still. Maybe is my eye playing tricks on me, but it even feels like the OPO gets brighter than the 6p.dbdynsty25 wrote:OLED vs. LCD. Re: OT:Smart Phones
You'll notice that ALL mainstream reviews talk about screens. Not all screens are equal, in fact there is a HUGE gap between all of them usually. Different tech, different resolutions, etc. Brightness is again, OLED vs. LCD. The OPO had a ridiculously bright and white screen. I prefer the OPO look as well, but the 6P is a much better overall phone. The only screen I liked more than the OPO is the Note 5/S6...it was a bit closer to the OPO in terms of the white balance.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:That's what I thought, but still. There are quite a few apps out there that allow for changing the color gamut if it really bothers you. ScreenAdjuster is one I've used before.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
I was researching online and seems like most people having issues have devices made on early batches. So I entered fast boot on my 6P and noticed that the mfg date is October 26 which is weird considering this phone was OOS for much of November.
Anyways I called Google and they'll ship me a new one, we'll see.

Re: OT:Smart Phones
Don't get your hopes up. Might be slightly less yellow but you're not going to be happy if you compare it directly to the OPO and you prefer the bluish white balance compared to the warmer yellow. Seriously.
