Re: Metal gear solid 5
I played through Ground Zeroes, too, and understood why it started where it did. But there is nothing fun about 5 minutes of slowly crawling forward, falling over every time he tries to pull himself up...and even then, it's such a linear path that you can't even crawl different directions. That was just bizarre, and drawn out way too long. That thing could have been about 1/4 of the time and been alright. I know it's a glorified tutorial, but they could have trimmed a ton of fat from that opener and I'd have been just fine with it.
Then again, I don't have a huge investment in Snake at all. Barely played the last few Metal Gears (and breakable silencers is still lame to me), but that opening level had me going "maybe I made a mistake". Thankfully, an hour or two past that, I was grinning from ear to ear constantly. Never played a more open-ended game, even if the "open world" is a bit misleading. You're still in zones around a larger map, and stray from those on mission and it's failure time, so it's not truly open world--but the zones are big enough that it's easy to not even notice most times, and the sheer number of ways you can accomplish any goal is mind-blowing.
One of the coolest experiences that I'll remember for years, but that intro...ugh.

Man, that 1st level was a dumpster fire. Thank goodness I read this thread and just gutted it out.
The first real mission is awesome so far. I made a huge mistake of not doing enough recon and got spotted which led to a firefight. The next checkpoint i reached, i waited for a bit and I'm glad i did as more troops showed up. I decided to just stay hidden and go around it.

Anyone up to the point you make a fob? It FORCES you to do it. I only like the fact you get double the manpower, but it sucks you can get raided. I set it up and have been raided twice. Each time they got resources and like 10 guys. If you take a month off from the game, you will come back to find you're completely wiped out. I'm more pissed off by this than 34 after a tough rams loss. My only option is to stay offline for the rest of the game by declining the Konami agreement when you first turn the game on. Total bull
Re: Metal gear solid 5
Just under 60 hours and finally saw the 'true' ending - in typical idiotic Kojima fashion the bloody game has THREE end-credit sequences. The Gamers With Jobs spoilercast really hit home with the obtuse nature of the game when they talked for over 90 minutes and neither of them were aware that they hadn't actually finished the game (which would have answered some of the questions they raised).
It's not a spoiler but you get an ending at the conclusion of Chapter 1, then another 'ending' after you finish Mission 45/Side-Op 150, and the 'final' ending after you finish Mission 46. If that wasn't stupid enough, there's another ending that was cut from the game but is in the form of a video in the special edition that you can find online. F*cking Kojima - no wonder Konami fired him.
I actually liked the twist at the end but I can see how it could rub people the wrong way.
Story garbage aside...this game is incredible. The open-world stealth sinks its teeth into and just when I started to feel like I was getting a bit bored, they throw in the RPG/Pokemon elements that ratcheted up the addiction. I would be driving to work thinking about playing this game. This stupid, stupid game where I fly into a mission zone in a helicopter that blares out Europe's 'The Final Countdown' as I am accompanied by a dog that WEARS A F@CKING EYE-PATCH (why? WHY?) and can cut enemies' throats with a knife. Or, if I don't want to take a dog with me I can take a horse that can wear armor plating and sh!ts on command - THERE IS A COMMAND TO MAKE YOUR HORSE TAKE A DUMP! And that's just scratching the surface of the madness. How about a 10 minute recorded conversation between two characters about hamburgers? Why not. Don't get me started on 'Quiet' - the explanation as to why she has to dress like a stripper is hilarious.
This stupid, dumb game and I absolutely loved it.

I do as well. My problem is that the story is so goddamn bananas that it ruins half the story missions. The side ops are so rich and immersive and the next thing you know I have alien, teleporting ninjas with Star Trek shield generators to deal with in a main mission!
Oh, and somewhere in the Hall of Fame of Hubris, Charles Foster Kane is golf clapping in awe at Kojima's balls for inserting beginning and end "credits" for everymission. I swear I've spent an hour of my life checking twitter while credits rolled in this game.
But it's awesome.

I wish we knew the truth about how much content was cut. So far chapter 2 is an insult with the repeat missions.
Re: Metal gear solid 5
Fletch - you don't have to do ANY of the repeat missions. Just keep doing/finishing new side ops and the new story missions (highlighted yellow) will appear.
Of course I had to troll NeoGaf to find this out because it would have been too straightforward for the bloody game to explain this.

Re: Metal gear solid 5
I know, thanks. From what I've read, there are only like 6-8 new missions in chapter 2. The rest are repeat missions on harder difficulty. That's a load of s***. There's rumors the game had a lot of content cut because Kojima took way too long and went way over budget. I would rather the game have 38 story missions where they are all unique, rather than 50 when a dozen of them are repeats. It just seems amateur to me.Macca00 wrote:Fletch - you don't have to do ANY of the repeat missions. Just keep doing/finishing new side ops and the new story missions (highlighted yellow) will appear.

I am loving the game for sure. zero desire to play online, but I could see myself replaying the campaign in a year or 2.

Just messing around today on the internet... and I've always thought of this series on the playstation only. Had no idea this was on the xb1 too.. so I ordered it today.
2nd highest rated game on the xb1 and it sounds like most everyone loves it.

The beginning is awful. Almost every cutscene is an incoherent mess. But the other 99% of the game is crazy fun.MizzouRah wrote:WTF is up with the beginning? Those fire creatures are crazy!

I liked it too. It did drag on a little but it was intense and interesting.MizzouRah wrote:I liked the beginning.. it was just so freaking weird.RobVarak wrote:The beginning is awful. I know I'm incredibly late to this party, but I finally started Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain in the last week. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600, yet this is my first Metal Gear game!
What gorgeous graphics. What a weird, yet compelling world in which to play. Digging it.

I envy you, Paul! Nothing like MGS. I have it in my top 3 franchises of all time, right along with splinter cell and gran turismo. I love every single MGS game. My favorites are probably MGS 5, MGS snake eater and the original on PS1.pk500 wrote:I know I'm incredibly late to this party, but I finally started Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain in the last week. I wish I could go back to the first time I played MGS!
With MGS 5, the game starts off slow but it really gets going once you are able to recruit soldiers. There is a cut scene inside the helicopter that is probably THE coolest video game moment of my life. You will know it when you see it, but I won’t spoil it.
