The putting engine really isn't that bad. You guys just need to spend some more time with it and learn it more.

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
I'm not pointing fingers at you. Did you read the rest of the thread after my post? Now you still want to ask that question? It's much worse over at OS and I know you see it. I'm perfectly fine with people having a different opinion of a game. I'm perfectly fine with people saying after time they got more comfortable with the putting. I'm even perfectly fine with people saying they like the system.DivotMaker wrote:By who? If you are again pointing the finger at me, what is your problem?
What I'm not fine with is people telling other people they just need to learn how to use it. Bullshit, a wet noodle could figure out this putting system. So yeah when the go to response to someone who complains about the putting model is, "You just haven't played enough, you just need to learn how it works" it annoys the crap out of me. So that is what I was referring too.
Tim, I know this will sound offensive but you're putting way too much stock in your importance in my life. Trust me, taking shots or pointing fingers at you is not even on my list of things I care about. I enjoy posting here because we can speak our minds and we all may get into arguments and what not but at the end of the day who cares it's video games.
Now if you were 34, it would be another story. I hate that dick

oh jeez. everybody all fired-up over an EA game having issues. Shocking.
anyway, the game is OK. Just doesn't have that "oh man, I wanna play this all night" feel at all. I play about 2 rounds then pop something else in. I'll probably play like that until Madden arrives then play more when/if they drop an update. I'd give it a solid C-.

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
I've had an absolute blast with it the past 2 nights online...even with the Double-Bogey-at-most online play, with grids or without grids, but the system of putting to the marker is pretty silly no matter how you slice it. Last night I couldn't sink a putt to save my life. The night before I strung together 5 birdies in a row with the hardest swing options and no grid.
I think that's why I like it so much. I never know what the hell I'm getting myself into at any given time. Putting is my least favorite part, though.

With the recent posts around here by you and db, it sure looked like finger-pointing to me. Whatever. As far as your importance to me, ditto. It's just a freaking video game at the end of the day and some will like it and some won't. I will say I agree with much of what is posted here both likes and dislikes. Just hope we keep our responses from getting personal from now on because it just isn't worth all the bullshit.

I wish I found putting that easy. I'm glad I suck. I have a slew of three putts, and I not only use grids, but I have the beads on too. Lighthouse was easy, but the greens are pretty flat.
I leave putts short, fly by holes, and never sink putts over 10 feet.

I've wondered if there would be enough demand for another difficulty level that DivotMaker has tagged "Tour Custom" (Advanced swing, Advanced Lies, Wind gusts on, shot arc off, green grids on [I take it "beadless" green grids is what is meant here?] Diagonal swing for draws/fades on) with the swing/fill meter HUD devices turned off and required a fully proportional swing interface for putting, and really, all shots? I wouldn't mind seeing the swing meter after impact as a feedback mechanism. I can see this design working for a significant segment of the market.Diablo25 wrote:Totally agree. I hate that the set up of the putt (and shots for that matter) is more important than actually executing the shot.
This would constitute a design change and I'm not sure it fits their three difficulty level model. Then again, I'm not sure that the majority of those now playing Tour difficulty (in ranked matches) wouldn't rather play something like I'm describing anyway. I read a lot more complaints about the load and fire putting interface from this group than praise, but I'm probably not doing a scientific survey on it either.
BTW, ths "Advanced" swing in the Tour Custom settings, I'm away from my XB1 for a while, but are the swing difficulty settings Normal, Hard, and Advanced, or is it Advanced, Hard? I had it set on the highest one and I could see a minor increase in accuracy control for full shots, and a higher tendency to push putts, in that highest setting, whatever it's called.

I am asking for just that. Another thing I am experimenting with is clicking the X button to remove the "Default" shot and attempting to hit the shot with feel and the swing instead of dialing it in D-Pad. Also moving my putting cursor off the green to see if I can dial in putts with the putting motion instead of the cursor.J_Cauthen wrote:I've wondered if there would be enough demand for another difficulty level that DivotMaker has tagged "Tour Custom" (Advanced swing, Advanced Lies, Wind gusts on, shot arc off, green grids on [I take it "beadless" green grids is what is meant here?] Diagonal swing for draws/fades on) with the swing/fill meter HUD devices turned off and required a fully proportional swing interface for putting, and really, all shots? Custom TOUR settings (Mine in Bold):
Swing Mechanic: 3-Click/Standard/Advanced
Swing Difficulty: Easy/Normal/Hard
Spin Control: on/Off
Green Grid: On/No Beads/Off
Putt Read: On/Off
Aiming Arc On/Off
Zoom: On/Off
Wind Gust: On/Off
Lie Effect: Normal/Advanced
Shot Shaping On/Off
Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
Maybe this game is best played with the 3-Click mechanic option...?! I'm actually not totally opposed to that as my default swing setting. After the last 10 years of golf video games, one thing has become clear to me - no matter how close a game gets to perfecting the analog swing meter, it still never really feels quite right. And sometimes, the closer it comes the more it makes the "not quite right" aspect stick out and frustrate.
That is probably the reason I have typically had more FUN with games like Hot Shots Golf and PowerSwing Golf. Still a fair amount of challenge but never an attempt to mimic a real life golf swing as it's probably unattainable.

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
The only difference between what you've listed above and what I was using in my final 2 hours was the grid... I was using beaded grids, but I really didn't give beadless grids a chance. I know I didn't fare too well with beadless grids in the 9 holes that me, 10spro and ssenator played together. I would have to try it more to get a feel for it.DivotMaker wrote:I am asking for just that. But yes, what you've defined was a more satisfying play experience for me personally I still found it too easy to hit the ball straight, but there was some differentiation between normal and hard swing difficulty level. It's also very difficult to shape shots with shot shaping on. I failed miserably at doing it, far worse than I did when trying to use the diagonal swing in Tiger 14.
I hope you're able to get somebody's ear on the dev team about this, but surely, they've got to see the growing sentiment for something like we're talking about here, don't you think?
Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
The closest analog swings to my ideal in console golf were those of Links 2004 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, with significantly reduced club sweetspots, via the club tuner in the game. I could have been happy with either of those two interfaces, preferably with Links 2004's full swing interface and Tiger 10's putting interface. If those two were in RMPGAT, I would be in hog heaven right now!Spooky wrote:Maybe this game is best played with the 3-Click mechanic option...?! I agree that the 3-click mechanic in Tour difficulty would be the most challenging right now for this game. I tried it for a couple of holes and went bogey double-bogey. It was very tough to hit the marks. I quit playing not because it was getting the best of me, but because I don't like watching meters when I play. I somehow feel more immersed in the game relying on the golfer animation to gauge my swing. I haven't been able to really enjoy a 3-click interface since Front Page Sports Golf for the PC in '97, when True Swing mouse interface was introduced.
Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
I said this earlier in the thread after like one night of the game on Access. When on the highest difficulty it's a definite challenge.Spooky wrote:Maybe this game is best played with the 3-Click mechanic option...?! I'd be interested in reading yours or anyone else's reactions to the removal of the default shot and moving the putting cursor off the green. My favorite putting interface of all time was that of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. It had a maximum putt strength of 90 feet though, which on rare occasions presented a problem. Out of curiosity, could you try hitting a variety of putt distances with the targeting cursor set to 90 feet. Just trying to find a reference point around which this might work for long and short putts.DivotMaker wrote:I am asking for just that. FYI. Tiger 14 for 360 is selling for $18 at Walmart bargain bin. Cheapest price anywhere.
Terrific game. So many courses. A shame Rory isn't even half of this. Game.

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
I still have it in my collection, but I quit playing it about 3 months after its release. For whatever reason, senses just couldn't reconcile the diagonal swing motion with - in essence - hitting a ball straight... I never got it. It felt better when I changed to a custom difficulty that left everything else as it was, but used the traditional vertical stick motion for a straight shot.Inuyasha wrote:FYI. Even with the custom difficulty set more to my liking, I still couldn't escape the Follow Cam, which I've never liked on any golf game, and the Follow Cam in Tiger 14 was my least favorite implementation of any of them. The "Broadcast" presentation option was horrific, so it wasn't an option. In the end, it was the no-win... for my tastes... presentation options of Tiger 14 that resulted in such a brief run with it.

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
Having great results (realistic outcomes) from getting rid of default shot and play the shot straight away with just the club chosen on a Full shot. Forces you to swing differently and it is a huge challenge, especially when you have to hit shorter than the stated club distance. This involves not moving the cursor except for left to right or right to left for aiming, not distance control.J_Cauthen wrote:I'd be interested in reading yours or anyone else's reactions to the removal of the default shot and moving the putting cursor off the green. Played Bay Hill Invitational again today (started over with a new CAG after EA Access was over). Was -24 through 3 rounds with the grids on and clicking default off on some of the shots. Round 4 I had all the default shots off and grids completely off and my default swing camera low and shot a 71 winning the tournament. Made 5 birdies and 4 bogeys and putting was VERY realistic. So were approach shots. If you use the settings above, click the Default shot off and play the club on approach shots as is (meaning not moving the aiming marker in to set the distance) and utilize the Low swing camera and get rid of grids, this plays like a simulation to me......YMMV.
Tomorrow, I will experiment with moving the putting cursor far away from the cup to see if there is any way to calibrate putts with the putting motion.....

And he's mentioning reasons why I gave up on it after a few weeks. I got tired of the freeze ups and other BS. I would go back to TW 13 or TW 11.

I've been playing '14 on the PS3 and haven't had any freeze ups. I do remember having them on the 360 and it was quite frustrating to say the least. I also popped in '13 and forgot how much I enjoyed that game as well. I'd say '13 is my favorite of the series.
Not to derail the Rory aspect of the thread, but does Divot or anyone else know about EA pulling the Tiger Woods games and their DLC content off of the marketplaces? I had downloaded some DLC for '13 that I've sense removed and it doesn't appear to be available for me to download again. Maybe I'm missing something here... anyway back to Rory

Re: Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR Golf
You can get the content back, at least on the 360. You will need to go into your download history and find it. From there you can redownload anything you've bought, even if it has been pulled from the store. And yeah, EA pulled everything after splitting with Tiger. So if you never bought it before, I don't think you can get it anymore. But I did download content for 13 recently.
I was playing 14 on the 360, and finally gave up. I does play a nice game, but getting 16 holes into a match and then having it freeze up is frustrating, especially if it was going well. TW 11 is still my favorite, just for the TrueAim zoom without the reticule and such. It basically had the system everyone is wishing RMPGAT had. But TW 13 is a really good game.
