It's not exactly expensive these days, dude. Especially for a guy who probably has the equivalent of an AMEX Black card at his local Gamestop. :)

Touche!

I just haven't gone and re-purchased a game that I had previously sold off in many years. Usually when I finally unload them, it's because I'm sure I'm done with it. This is the one that I can't figure out why I got rid of it to start with. I'm sure I'll cave, because watching these things and being unable to at least lay a lap down is starting to piss me off.

These events have made me happy that I bought Forza 5 as my first digital title on the console. I had put it down for a long time, so it was nice to have it there for when this comes up.

I may prefer FH2 for day to day game playing, but Forza 5 still brings something unique and awesome to the table.

These events remind me how shitty a race car driver i am compared to you guys! Now, to convince my wife that I should buy a $300 wheel to help get better times, and inflate my ego against my "internet friends"......... ;)

I just can't fathom how I put down what I think is a good lap, and find I'm still 10 seconds behind the lead guy!

Well, I am on Spring Break right now, but if you want to try some of the cars, builds, setups, and paint jobs I have been using for this round so far, see below. Like the Sebring Challenge, I tried some different cars and went for an open wheel theme where possible, in celebration of Long Beach. I don't know if I will stick with these for the whole challenge, but they are a fun starting point. I have stumbled upon a pretty good build/setup guy, gangrel, who has some good career build cars that I have been using in career, and a couple have worked well here as well. Turn 10 has done such a great job with Long Beach. I think it may be one of the best tracks in any racing sim, PC or console.

DSP Grand Prix of Long Beach Mechberg Rivals Challenge
----- Week 3 Update as of April 14, 2015 -----
-Monday Mar 23 - Sunday April 19, 2015 at 11:59pm EDT

Remember, you have until this Sunday April 19, 2015 at 11:59pm EDT to get your laps in. We may have our largest participation yet, if we can get some more times posted in R, P, and X class. Nice to see Zeppo and 10spro in the mix. Come on Terry, re-purchase the game. :)

-One tip for the Class X Indycars: There is currently a Forza 5 Monthly Rivals Challenge for Class X with Indycars to qualify for their next Forza Invitational Event, so you can kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

Forza Invitational
Last month we held our inaugural Forza Invitational event, which featured Turn 10’s own VoodooUomo taking on some of the best racers in the Forza community. The result was fantastic and we’ve been cooking up new ideas for how we could continue the idea. The qualifying session for our next Forza Invitational event begins this Monday, April 13. In honor of this week’s Long Beach Grand Prix, qualifying will take part in IndyCars on the Long Beach circuit so, if you’re so inclined, you can start getting your practice in this weekend before the qualifying event starts up.

Just a little over 12 hours left to get your times posted. There have been some pretty stout times posted in the last 24 hours.

And don't forget to watch the real Grand Prix of Long Beach at 4:00pm EDT on NBCSN today!

Here is a cool video of Helio Castroneves pole winning time of 01:06.6294. Granted, they are in different Indycars than we are running in Forza 5 for this challenge, but man that is a fast lap.

I think I have a clean lap in all classes...... Some classes are just lame "get me one" times though. Espeically Class P, where I could only afford to upgrade the Konnesig (or whatever) to Class P, after not being able to drive it very well in the previous class!

I don't know how some of you guys can do so well...... I'm like 5 seconds off in some classes, or more!

I think a wheel would probably knock a few seconds off for me, but even then........

I went in an clicked on my old Gifted Money messages, and now I have 8 million credits to spend on something fancy.

I kind of snuck most of my laps in on the last day. I'm hoping to get more of them in early this month, and then actually spend some time trying to improve them. Regardless, it was a great way to spend a lazy rainy Sunday.

You do realize that be merely re-buying the game you just increased the odds that everyone will move on to Project CARS when that drops May 12th, right? :-)

Seriously, though, this challenge DChaps set up made buying Forza 5 digitally when it came out 100% worth it. It was nice to have it ready to go when this came up. I'm slowly becoming a better driver, too. This month I eased off of some of the assists, which made it tougher, but actually more fun. I'm still not ready for manual transmissions, though. I'm sure that along would knock several seconds off my times, but I have a lot to master before being able to concentrate on shifting enough to not let it destroy everything else I am doing.

This is an interesting time. In some ways, Project CARS could drop and just be the racer everyone ever wanted. But this has made me really crave Forza 6, too. I have to think PCars will force Microsoft to deliver a lot more content in the next game.

Due to my prior commitments to a newly reacquired WoW addiction I only spent a few hours on Don's thing...but damn it was fun.

I am far more interested in the next track and in a Forza 6 than I am in PC.

DSP Grand Prix of Long Beach Mechberg Rivals Challenge - Final Results
-Monday Mar 23 - Sunday April 19, 2015 at 11:59pm EDT
-Post a clean Rivals Lap in all 8 classes at Long Beach Full
-Use any car, setup/tune, and assists you like, but try to post a clean lap for it to count in the Rank.

-Goal: Shoot for two Benchmarks (aka Ranks). The Mechberg Rank and the World Record 107% Rank

Using Turn 10's Brian Ekberg's (Mechberg) times as a Benchmark, your total rank is how many total seconds slower, or faster you were to his benchmark times at Long Beach Full Circuit.

-Any laps that were not clean, I added 5 seconds and highlighted in yellow.
-If you completed at least 5 of the 8 classes, but missed a couple, I added +25 and highlighted in red.
-Any laps that were faster than Mechberg's times or the 107% times are highlighted in Green.

Brian's times at Long Beach were probably the toughest to beat yet. He had pretty stout times in all the classes. In fact, while Adam (theycallhimsim) and I both managed to get an overall negative Mechberg Rank, neither of us could take down his Class B time and I tried literally up until the last minute of the contest to get it. The 107% of the World Record Rank proved to be pretty tough as well. Adam was very close to going negative for the 107% rank in several classes, but none of us actually got one.

Really great participation showing overall, and it was awesome seeing Mix, Zeppo, and 10spro in there this time. Cool to see that Terry will be there for the next one to give Adam some competition. Thanks to everyone that competed!

Next up is my favorite venue of all time, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the place that as a 4 year old watching "Johnny Lightning" scream down the front strech during practice sessions that I fell in love with racing. I will try to post the details soon, but you can go ahead and get started now! :) We will be running all classes on the Oval and the Road Course.

PS - By the way, I don't know why it has my R Class Time posted on 4/20. I did post that time on Sunday late evening, but I don't think it was even close to midnight as I was running B Class up to the deadline. Just so no one thinks I am pushing the rules, you can see my posting of the final times on youtube at the link below. You will see the publishing date is 4/19. Anyway, not that it matters, but I just wanted to be transparent. Also, while these contests have always allowed any assists you want to use, I felt bad about the P Class win in the Coyote. I meant to turn off traction control after running the X Class Indycars, and instead of turning it off, I actually added whatever the next assist level is for TCS. I should have known as soon as I hit that time, because that Coyote is a complete beast to drive with no assists. Unfortunately there is no way to unpost a time to the leaderboard.

DSP Indianapolis 500 Mechberg Rivals Challenge

Monday Apr 20 - Sunday May 24, 2015 at 11:59pm EDT

Post a clean Rivals Lap in all 8 classes at Indianapolis Road Course and Oval

Use any car, setup/tune, and assists you like, but try to post a clean lap for it to count in the Rank.

Any laps that are not clean, I will add 5 seconds and highlight in yellow. If you complete at least 5 of the 8 classes, you can still get a rank, but missing class times will get a +25 and highlighted in red.

Shoot for two Benchmarks (aka Ranks). The Mechberg Rank and the World Record 107% Rank

Why those Ranks? Our old friend Brian Ekberg (Mechberg, aka BBReBozo) of Turn 10, sits atop my Friends leader boards (timewise) for practically all the cars/classes when I pull up any Rivals events. Therefore, providing pretty solid lap times to shoot for. Try to beat his times posted for Indianapolis Road Course and Oval for all Classes. Brian actually had a couple classes without times (highlighted in orange), so for those I have the benchmark time as whoever from DSP currently sits on top my Friends leaderboard. There were also a couple cases where Brian's time was not the top of my friends leaderboard (highlighted in purple), but I still use his time as the benchmark, since this is all about trying to be better than Brian. :)

And if that is not enough of a challenge, you can also try to beat the 107% time of the current World Record for that class. The 107% rule is a Formula One regulation where during the first phase of qualifying, any driver who fails to set a lap within 107 percent of the fastest lap time will not be allowed to start the race.

Your overall Rank for both benchmarks is how positive or negative you are to the benchmark times.

At 11:59pm EDT on Sunday May 24, 2015 the challenge will end and I will record video of the current leader boards so that it basically takes a "snapshot". I will then compile the results and give each DSP member posting times for each class a Mechberg Rank and a World Record 107% Rank for both the road course and the oval.

I have provided below the current Mechberg Laps, Cars, Assists Used, etc. per Class at Indianapolis, as well as the current World Record in Forza 5 and it's subsequent 107% time. Likewise, if there are some other cars that are consistently being used in the top 100 times, I posted those as well. But again, feel free to use your own and be creative.

One of the world records - I think it's class B on the road course - is currently -5.000 seconds. Where he's going, he doesn't need roads.

Tried the oval in a '73 Trans-Am with 900 horsepower and a cornering rating of 3.6. Don't do it. Learn from my idiocy.

I'm at Mosport this weekend, working the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada race. Boggles my mind why no console video games have this track. An incredible circuit that requires massive balls. Tons of high-speed and off-camber corners, with hardly any runoff areas. An old-school, man's track.

Mosport has become arguably my favorite circuit in North America in just the last 12 months. I can't get enough of this place. Stand once on the bridge on the front straight and see an IMSA prototype dive down the hill into Turn 1 at 130 mph without touching the brakes, and you'll realize there is a motorsports god like few other circuits on this continent, if any.

Damn, I wish Mosport was in Forza.

DSP Indianapolis 500 Mechberg Rivals Challenge
----- Leaderboards as of May 18, 2015 -----
-Monday Apr 20 - Sunday May 24, 2015 at 11:59pm EDT
-Post a clean Rivals Lap in all 8 classes at Indy Road Course and Indy Oval
-Use any car, setup/tune, and assists you like, but try to post a clean lap for it to count in the Rank.

Just under a week to go to get your times posted for this months challenge.

Quick Stats:
-Adam is currently atop the leaderboard in 12 out of 16. Mechberg still has the top time for 3 events, and I have the top for one.
-Adam (theycallhimsim), Vader29, and Aristo (JayhawkerSTL) are the only ones to post clean times in all events so far.
-Terry (Rockjaw McGraw) made a brief appearance in D Class!

Tried some new historics and different paint jobs. They were not always the fastest, but man it is fun to drive that Maserati around the oval.

Sorry for the upcoming brag, but I rarely have these moments. :) While I waited through the real Indy 500 qualifcation delays, I put in a ton of laps in the X class Indycar in Forza and posted a top 100 leaderboard time. I do not think I have ever done that in any Forza game ever. My guess is that not too many people post laps on the Indy oval, so not a big deal, but I still consider it my "home" track, it's where I learned to love real racing, and I have probably run more virtual laps at Indy oval than any other track in existance. I swear I could hear Tom Carnegie over the loudspeaker exclaiming ”…annnnnd heeeeeeeeeeee’s ON-IT!” Now someone go and bump me to the 2nd row!
