Need Some PC Advice
Looking for a suggestion fellas. My Mom needs a new laptop. She only uses her current one to surf the net, email and play solitaire, etc. Looking for suggestions on an economical Notebook/Chromebook. I'll be doing my own research but any suggestions you guys have would be great. Thanks in advance.

If those are the uses and you don't see them expanding go with a Chromebook. There are quite a few damn good models now. A few affordable ones with 1080p screens too. That's my wife's next laptop. Just makes sense.

Yeah, I'm looking at either a Chromebook or an HP Stream. Thanks for the response.dbdynsty25 wrote:If those are the uses and you don't see them expanding go with a Chromebook. I was going to to suggest a table. My daughter got an HP Stream 7 for Christmas and really likes it. I imagine one of the larger ones would do well for the needs you listed if a 7 inch screen is too small.
I got a Kindle Fire 6, as I wanted something smaller and lighter for reading in bed. I really like it, and one of the larger ones of these would also work as well as a Stream, but the app store is a little better.

I really like 'tables' but their OS is kinda datedAristo wrote:I was going to to suggest a table. My daughter got an HP Stream 7 for Christmas and really likes it. I imagine one of the larger ones would do well for the needs you listed if a 7 inch screen is too small.

Seriously, I thought about a tablet but they won't really work for my mom. She would want a physical keyboard. MS App Store is limited but will be fine for her. Solitaire and Yahtzee would overwhelm her. Thanks.

We got a Stream for my daughter for Christmas. The screen is uninspiring, but otherwise it's a great little machine, perfect for those tasks that you highlighted.Diablo25 wrote:Yeah, I'm looking at either a Chromebook or an HP Stream. I've been trying to convince my dad to get a tablet and a thin keyboard case instead of a new laptop. He hasn't done it yet so I can't tell if that idea was a winner or loser.

Hi Guys.
With my son heading to high school after the holiday I'm in need of a laptop for him. School has not given us any guidelines or requirements. Typical uses will be accessing assignments online, google drive, basic web research etc. For those of you that are familiar with lower priced laptops i'd really appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

Sounds like an ideal candidate for a Chromebook, as long as he doesn't want to use the machine for gaming and/or have plenty of onboard storage. I assume there's a steady wifi connection at school and everywhere else he'll use the laptop? Essential for a Chromebook.FifaInspected wrote:Hi Guys.

Disagree. Chromebooks still are a pointless segment in my opinion. Why limit yourself when you can spend slightly more and have a fully functional and significantly more powerful laptop?pk500 wrote:Sounds like an ideal candidate for a Chromebook, as long as he doesn't want to use the machine for gaming and/or have plenty of onboard storage. Plan on spending about 500-600 bucks on a machine that will last him through high school. Chromebooks function WAY different than PCs, so getting support at school (if he's allowed to bring it there) is going to be non-existent. Pick a model from any of the big guys and they all will functionally be the same in that price segment. They all share parts anyway, so it's really moot. Make sure you get at least an Intel i5 processor (not an i3 - too weak, or an i7 - overkill) and at least 4GB of ram. Other than that, just go with whatever looks/feels the best.

Re: Need Some PC Advice
Just going to throw in my agreement with DB, especially since you don't know what the school requires. I work in educational sales now and a lot of programs will not function on a chrome book. I would strongly suggest if you're in a bring your own device district what they suggest, it would be very uncommon for a district to require devices and not give out suggested specs.
