I think I'm leaning Far Cry 4 first, but I will get to this!

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Played for about an hour last night, while tired and sick. I was expecting more of an introduction to what was going on. Camera and controls a little clunky on the PC so I'll likely switch to the 360 controller tonight. I haven't tried tactical combat, things happen so fast and there was really no need. My 3 party members seem to destroy everything while I occasionally hack at some kind of monster.
Scenery is impressive to say the least, had the excellent Bioware writing and dialogue going on. Just was a little disappointed with the combat still an action fest from how I had it set last night. I'll try and see what I am doing wrong tonight.

Game is made to be played with a controller. Beautiful world, so much to do it is overwhelming.

Exactly you can't walk very far without hitting a side quest. It's pure chaos at first but I'm trying to stay with one line and move from there.XXXIV wrote:Danimal wrote: so much to do it is overwhelming.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
After all the quality time I spent with the turn-based Divinity this summer, I'm having a tough time adjusting to the real-time chaos of combat in DA. Are any of you guys actually using the tactical camera thingamajig? Seems clunky, so for now I'm just letting my party do its thing and using my player controlled mage to toss spells.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
I feel the same way Rob. They said the combat was improved from DA2 and I agree but it is no where near as cerebral as Divinity and I still think DA 1 had the best combat. I suggest getting used to the tactile camera outside of combat and while this allows you to control every nuance, it doesn't slow anything down.RobVarak wrote:After all the quality time I spent with the turn-based Divinity this summer, I'm having a tough time adjusting to the real-time chaos of combat in DA. My understanding is if you play above normal difficulty it's almost required to use tactical combat. As it stands now people just attack the same s*** I'm attacking, they fall down I hold a and revive them. The more I play the easier it gets but I'd go far as to say Skyrim had better combat than DAI, at least so far.
I haven't tinkered with changing my parties behavior at all.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Finally got the hang of tactical combat tonight and it pays off for the tough fights. I spend several hours playing tonight just wandering and doing side quests. Really is freaking amazing, my main complaint with the DA games has always been lack of enemy types but that is not bothering me too much so far.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
I'm still mainly doing side quests, I should get on with the main plot line but some of these are so interesting and exploring is just so much fun. Last night I ran into a new kind of demon that killed my entire party. Not sure what it was called but it floated / flew and shot some kind of persistent beam out of its mouth. Before I could even think everyone was dead.
I also did another quest line and after finishing one quest it told me to do something at the War Table, WTF is the War Table?

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
I'll be purchasing this one after work today.
Being my first entry into the Dragon Age series, I've been spending the last couple of days (with some sleep, work and parenting mixed in) reading about the first two games. Kotaku has a good "Beginner's guide to Dragon Age" posted on their site.
With GTA5 and Far Cry 4 as other options, it was a tough call, but being a huge Mass Effect fan, I think I'm ready to dive into a lengthy story driven action drama. Looking forward to spending at least an hour creating my character tonight...

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Yeah I know exactly which demon you're talking about. I'm assuming you ran into the rift near the horsemaster. That thing is a level 12 rift so close to starter area things that it can be beastly. I think of it sort of like a flying witch, because that's what it feels like. Those things are lethal in multiplayer, too.
War Table is back in Haven, where you go to send your agents on missions and whatnot.

Make sure to go to the DragonAge keep or whatever it is called. You can make the major choices from the first 2 games that will set some background stuff in this one I believe.fanatic wrote:I'll be purchasing this one after work today.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
That is exactly where i was, holy f*** that thing destroyed me. How do you tell the rift level? I must be missing that. Thanks, I haven't even consider going back to Haven yet, so much to do in the Hinterlands.TCrouch wrote:Yeah I know exactly which demon you're talking about. Yeah - it's a cool site for sure. I had some time last night to make some of the choices (I wish they gave more context about each one), but didn't have a chance to press play and see the story told.
Based on the fact that so little context is given, I definitely get the feeling that Keep is best for those who have played the first two games and wish they could import their many choices in to the Inquisition world. Still helpful for an newcomer - but I don't think I will import this world, just in case it causes Inquisition dialogue to reference things I might still be foggy about.
Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
You can't, but when you "lock" an enemy with Tab, it shows you the health bar at the top of your screen, with the creature level and icon in the middle of that bar. Orange shields are tough enemies, different icons for elites, etc. The demons that spawn out of that rift are level 12. If you're a lower level, you'll see red skulls on their body when you aim at them without locking. That's a hint that they're much more powerful than you are.
I tend to explore and cautiously approach groups to target lock them and check levels before blazing in, because I've had a few experiences like the one you describe. The first time I ran across a dragon, I about sh*t myself. Came out of nowhere, and fired a fireball from across the map that insta-killed two of my party members at once. I did all I could just to retreat and recollect myself.

Played some on PS4, and good luck with that unless we have 4. It's an absolute massacre as the encounters are tuned for 4 "good" players. My wife and I constantly die in room 2 of 5, or if we get lucky, we make it to 3.

Sure, we can do it. Just be prepared to get waxed repeatedly.
Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Need more time to play stuff!
Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Took about 7-8 hours before it really sunk its hooks into me, but I'm all in now. Lots of systems to come to grips with (Finish a mission and getting XP and Power and Influence and Perks...it's all a bit kitchen sink, isn't it?) and I wish the min/max process was a little more streamlined, but it's really a damn good game.
