I typically don't snap anything to the screen because it bugs the crap out of me and sheepishly I don't know how to remove it.
I think that some or all popup notifications are turned off by default. I remember setting mine so that only friends listed as favorites will pop up when they go online.
As far as snap with controller: A double tap of the Xbox button on your controller will bring up a menu that allows you to open a new app in snap mode, close the current snapped app, or switch focus between your game and your running snapped app.
To record last 30 seconds of gameplay: Double tap Xbox button and press X on the controller.

I might be up for some late night FH2. There is an international film festival in town, so we are going to spend a lot of time seeing documentaries and foreign flicks. It's always a lot better than I expect. But it means I have to wait until later to get on, which really isn't all that different than normal.
