OT: To the ATL

Post by dbdynsty25 »

Does anyone know of anything cool to do in Atlanta during the day? I'm going there to catch a few Braves games this week against Florida and I'm trying to fill a couple of days w/ stuff before the game. I know there are a couple locals in here (DChaps I believe)...anything worth seeing or doing?

Somehow I think this may not appeal to you, but the High Museum is really nice.
but really, this is 2004, and nearly everything is considered to be gay now

I hear the tour of the Coke HQ was pretty cool. I think that is in in ATL. May have even been someone here that brought it up.

I heard that too...I had already added that to my list of possiblities.

What's the High Museum (I'm afraid to ask).

Hmm High Museum... I thought it was a tribute to Marrion Berry but he was the mayor of Wash DC.

Never been to the ALT myself but let us know how it was when you get back.

I don't know how far it is from Atlanta but I'd recommend spending a day in Savannah.

Here are some of the better "touristy" things to do:

Little 5 Points / Virginia Highlands (This would be my personal recommendation. Nothing spectacular, but a cool section of town with decent bars, restaurants, record stores, shops, etc. The place where the people who think they are cool hang out. ;) "Little 5", and "the Highlands" are considered two separate places, but they are very close together so you can hit them both pretty easily. Below are some links with maps, guides, and reviews to that section of town)

http://www.l5p.com/

http://www.patweb.com/l5p/index.cfm

http://www.virginiahighland.com

While visiting Little 5 Points, check out The Vortex for some decent food and people watching.

http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com

The Varsity (The worlds largest drive in fast food place. Has been in business since 1928. You can load up on burgers, chili dogs, onion rings, and a jumbo FO. I ate there way too much while attending GA Tech)

http://www.thevarsity.com/

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History (pretty cool museum with IMAX theatre and dinosaurs, among other things)

http://www.fernbank.edu/museum/homepage.html

The High Museum of Art (I have not seen any recent exhibits, but there is usually something good there. Claim to fame of the building itself is that it was shown as the mental ward where Hannibal Lecter was in the movie Manhunter)

http://www.high.org

The World of Coca-Cola (Amazingly, I have never been there and I am a huge Coke addict. Have heard you can try lots of free weird beverages)

http://www.woccatlanta.com/

Zoo Atlanta (pretty decent Zoo, all about the primates and the Pandas)

http://www.zooatlanta.org/

Stone Mountain Park (the world's largest rock with a big ass Confederate carving in it):

http://www.stonemountainpark.com/

Underground Atlanta (basically a big underground shopping mall and restaurants where the railroads used to be. Last time I was there it appeared to be struggling and I got hasseled by street performing mimes, but alot of people still like to go there)

http://www.underground-atlanta.com/

CNN Studio Tours (I have not been, but a friend of mine who works for CNN says its pretty good. Who knows, you might meet Wolf Blitzer!)

http://www.cnn.com/StudioTour/

SciTrek (kind of cool interactive science and technology museum, more fun for kids than adults though)

http://www.scitrek.org/

Buckhead (Really more of a nightlife section of town, but has loads of restaraunts, shops, malls, etc. If you venture into the neighborhoods you will find all the old money of the South. Some ridiculous mansions and homes. Famous for being the site of Ray Lewis' post Superbowl troubles.)

http://www.buckhead.org/

The Cheetah (Of course the ATL is infamous for its strip clubs. Unfortunately, you cannot visit the site of Andruw's "Lesbian Action" as The Gold Club is no longer in business, but The Cheetah is considered the top of the line. Supposedly has a very good lunch buffett, but I have never tried it myself.)

http://www.thecheetah.com/

Also check out the Official Atlanta Street MAP & Visitor Guide for more events, restaurants, shops, etc.

http://www.mapatlanta.com/

I will be attending at least one of the Florida games this week, so shoot me a PM if you want to hook up for a $8 beer at the game. :)

What part of town are you staying in?

BTW, I'm stayin' pretty close to the airport...off the 85. So not really close to anything as far as I can tell from the maps. I'll let ya know what we find out. Thanks for the advice.

Hot damn, Chaps.... that's a long ass list to not have one titty bar on it...

DB, you'd better report on all the good s*** to do there because I will be there later in the summer and I definitely plan on doin' the A-Town stomp....

Edit: sorry, I misread what the Cheetah was.... you said Atlanta was infamous, then said "unfortunately" so I skipped the rest... :D

I never was one for the really nice strip clubs, I prefer them a bit skankier. That said, there's a couple to look for: the Doll House (one downtown and one north of the city) and the Taj Mahal (basically in Smyrna) that were favorites of mine back in the day.

The Taj is much nicer but it was so close to where I lived that I usually went there.

I don't think the Taj Mahal exists anymore, or if it does it is really scaled back due to new liquor/adult entertainment laws. Have not been there personally, but the Pink Pony currently has the reputation for the hardest working employees.

When I was there in February I stayed at the Omni Hotel, it was really nice. When you're there just look up in the sky and look for the big circular glass building, that's it :D

As for things to do, I went to do the Richard Petty Driving Experience, but that was only one day. We also went to the World of Coke, took the CNN Tour, went down to walk through the Olympic Park, and went to the Underground Shopping Place. There is also a little town called Buckhead up the road, which is where you'll find ESPN Zone.

LOL...Gold Club.

I've got a buddy that lives here in ATL. I hung out with him today and we drove by where the Gold Club used to be. Of course he got in his Andruw jab as well.

Lucky they got the game in tonight. It was a thing of beauty after the 3 hour and 20 min. wait. I felt like Pigpen waitin' at Indy. I can't believe they waited till 10:55pm EST to start the game. The rain just wouldn't let up.

I've gotta hand it to ya DC...the women here are pretty damn nice. A lot better than I expected. I'm pleasantly surprised at the scenery.

I love connections too...my contact got us right behind home plate, 15 rows up. It's BEAUTIFUL. As well as passes to the 755 club which is pretty off the hook as well.

Rolled through Buckhead today...thats pretty nice out there. Saw the Vortex in that area...didn't head over to Little 5...will probably do that tomorrow morning (well, later this morning, seeing as how I'm writing this when I got back to the hotel at 3:00am EST).

It's funny Don...when I was rollin' around with my buddy he kept mentioning points of interest and things about ATL and he touched on almost everything you mentioned. Good times.

Thanks again.

Go Braves.

Yeah, I meant to warn you that the weather has sucked here the last few weeks. Not a normal Atlanta summer at all. We never have this much rain. We had like a 10 year drought and now its making up for it in one month.

I was shocked to hear that got the game in as well. Did not make it down there tonight, but I stopped checking on the TV after about 10:00pm. Props to you guys for waiting it out.

db, you still here?

If so, I apologize for the s#^$$y @ss weather. I can't remember the last time it rained this many days in a row in June. Honestly, I can't remember the last time it rained this many days for the whole summer. It's like we are in Indianapolis in May, or Portland anytime of the year.

Hey, at least we are only 3 1/2 games back now.

HAHA...I hear ya D. That's what my buddy said too. I came back to LA yesterday...I was only there for two full days, just to catch the Monday and Tuesday games. All is well (75 degrees, 30% humidity and sunny) here so don't worry about that.

I was surprised it was so crappy there weatherwise, but I saw some cool things (drove around through Buckhead, Little 5/Virigina Highlands and drove right by the High museum LOL). It was good times...
