Talk about a shocker, completely ruined my day hearing this. I grew up with Robin Williams from the Mork & Mindy days, he never has ceased to make me laugh. Incredibly original talent. So sad that someone who has given so many laughs and happiness wasn't happy himself. RIP. :(

Yeah, I am all bummed out. Dead Poet Society, Mrs Doubtfire, GM Vietnam among my favorites. I remember his beginning career with More and Mindy.

Depression sucks, rest in peace Robin.

****

I'm gutted, very sad. I understand comics often develop their humor as a coping mechanism or a mask, but damn... I always enjoyed Robin Williams' manic humor as well as his more dramatic side in movies like Awakenings, GWH, and Dead Poets Society.

What a damn shame... RIP

Sad, sad, sad. This one really hurts. Williams always had an electricity about him. Always a kid at heart. Whether it was his standup or his acting he always seemed genuine. We lost a good one today boys. RIP Mr. Williams.

Very sad.

Remember him playing Mork on Happy Days before they spun on Mork and Mindy. They were Happy Days

Enjoyed that crappy show and then enjoyed him til now.
Teal wrote:.been a constant companion since my childhood...
WOW.

For sure lost a constant today. Life goes by fast.

Will watch GWH before bed. Thought he was awesome in that.

RIP Robin Williams.

Truly an amazing talent. Depression is a horrible thing to live with. So sad that he lost the battle and hope he at least found what he was looking for in death. Among some of my favorites not mentioned yet are The Fisher King and Moscow on the Hudson. RIP, Robin.

I was talking with my mom about Robin Williams at dinner and she reminded me how he took care of his old friend Christopher Reeve's family. I think he even helped make sure they could cover their medical bills. What a great guy!

Sad loss, but at least he left a full body of work behind to enjoy.

Me and my wife were shocked when we heard this breaking news last night. My wife sat there with
a look of disbelief on her face for a long time.

Robin Williams was truly a unique and special talent. Not many like him at all.
Have no idea was inner demons he was dealing with, but at least he's at peace
now. If someone is so miserable with life, do they have the right to end it for
themselves? Tough to answer that one, especially when there is family involved.

Good thing coming out of this story is that more people are now openly discussing depression and mental illness.
It's about time. 1 out of everu 10 people have depression, but for some reason it has a stigma attached to it
and people try and hide it or are afraid what others will think if they do come out about it. Chevy Chase tweeted
how he suffers from the same thing and hopefully more high profile celeb's will follow his lead. There is no way
anyone can know what it was like inside of William's head unless you're him. I don't judge him at all for what he
did. He must have had some damn good reasons.

Not "good" to us. "Good" to him. You are thinking in rational, simple black and white
terms. Don't judge what the guy did unless you know what he was going through.
And since none of us can possibly know that, we cannot say. Unless you have been
that low, to where taking your own life seems like a better option than going on, you
can't possibly know what that's like. Be happy that you don't.

I can think of one good reason--a debilitating disease that means you'll spend a decade or more watching your body wither away while your brain stays intact. My wife's uncle took the suicide route when diagnosed with that.

Anything outside of that, I cannot comprehend leaving a woman alone who obviously loves you...family, etc. You're right, it's being thought of with rational thought, but it just seems so damned selfish to do to people who love you. There are always other ways.

Jack, don't put words in my mouth. But I will say it again: THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO COMMIT SUICIDE. There is absolutely no good reason. Being depressed is not a good reason. Depression is looking at life through a cracked lens. Everything you see is skewed as a result. And without going into details, I'm more qualified than many to make such an assertion. I've been on both sides of that lens. There is not one damned thing in life that ending said life would fix. Ever. Even with the scenario Terry mentioned, as painful and damnable a position as that is...it's a 'solution' that doesn't solve.

That's a common response. But when you are that low, you think your women is better off without you...hell, the world is better off without you.
You don't even realize your woman or family love you. Like I said to Teal...be happy you can't comprehend that line of thinking. It means you're mentally stable.
Obviously William's wasn't as lucky.

You are correct. It doesn't "solve" anything. In fact, there is a video they played last night of R. Williams saying "suicide doesn't fix anything".

All I said was he had his own reasons for doing what he did. I also have "experience" in this field and every case is unique. I'm just glad that this common illness is being talked about more now in the open. Open discussion can only help. It's time for mental illnesses to get the same attention that physical illnesses get. In many ways, they can be much worse.

You're right there. Agreed 100%. Can't even understand anybody thinking that their family is better off dealing with their sudden loss and all the questions of "why?", followed by grief, sorrow, rage, and any number of emotions.

But you made a good point--he was probably so lost in his own inner turmoil that he had it all twisted up in his head.

Just sad that such a great funnyman could be so far off path.
