Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
This Steam sale is doing horrible, horrible things to my wallet. I went for Ferrari Racing Legends on Saturday, along with New Star Soccer 5, Surgeon Simulator 2013 and the Sonic Hits Collection (which is almost of relevance to this thread - it's not a sim, but Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is ridiculous fun). I might spring for NASCAR 2013 tonight along with, for anyone who might like this sort of thing, every single Tomb Raider game I've ever heard of for 9 quid.
The reason I'm here, however, is to tell you that I almost downloaded Assetto Corsa on Saturday too. The reason I didn't was that I tried the free 60 minute trial of Game Stock Car 2013 and decided I couldn't live without it. Forget about "oh, it's just an rFactor mod", because it's much more. Remarkably good-looking given the age of the gMotor2 engine, GSC 2013 has a massive feature set, with karts, classic touring cars, F3 and Reiza Studios' take on 70s, 80s and modern day F1 supplementing the main stock car mode. The force feedback is perhaps not quite on the level of the very best but more than good enough, sounds are solid, some of the tracks are enormously entertaining throwbacks to that period BT (Before Tilke) when it was OK to have grass and gravel on the outside of the road and the AI actually has some I. In common with most gMotor efforts, they get incredibly feisty if you so much as think about upping their aggression bar, but keep them at 25% or thereabouts and they're courteous, clean and fair while still racing you properly.
If you have a couple of hours spare any time soon, nip over to http://game-stockcar.com.br/?lang=en and download the trial. It's fully featured but time-limited, so give the Stock Cars a go at VeloPark, the F3s a spin at a fabulous little place called Taruma or the Formula Classic at 1970s Interlagos. It's as much fun as anything I've driven all year.

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Game stock car was my favorite racing purchase of last year, by far.
I completely agree, mate.

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Adam and Terry, you guys just did me a huge favor. I had been on the fence on Game Stock Car and just had not had time to check it out. After seeing Adam's post, I just went looking for some info and found out they are running a great deal on Game Stock Car 2013 and their Formula Truck 2013 simulation that also got some good reviews (I was a big fan of Mercedes Benz Truck Racing back in the day). Apparently, Reiza Studios will be also releasing free updates to Game Stock Car 2013 on roughly a monthly basis. Even more awesome! Anyway, thanks for the info guys, everyone go get Game Stock Car 2013 for the Holidays!

Reiza is planning to release monthly updates for GSC 2013, introducing new content and features. The updates will be free for all owners of GSC 2013 and introduce content that will be largely exclusive to the title.
Over the next few months we plan to continue supporting GSC2013 with a constant flow of developments, including new cars, new tracks and new simulation features. Without going into specific details just yet, this is what GSC2013 users can look foward to in the near future:
1- The updates will come in at a roughly regular pace – every month or so something new will be added to the sim, be it a new track, a new car, or a new feature, along with continuous improvements & eventual bug fixes;
2- All updates will be free – if you own GSC2013, the new content will be made available to you at no adittional charge. We are however looking into experimenting with more community interaction for those willing to participate and contribute with the funding of these developments;
3- As with the content currently available in the sim, there will be a mix of licensed and fictional content;
4- The main goal for these updates is to continue to enrich the simulation and the diversity of driving experiences available – no “more of the same”, the new content will complement and enhance the existing stuff into an even more complete racing sim package;
5- The diversity is relative to our own content but also relative to other sims – these are not cars and tracks you are likely to find in every other racing game (they are not obscure either mind);
6- Also keeping to the “diversity” guideline, relative to base content the new content will be largely international (non-brazilian) – from past, present and future

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
If anybody has a configuration that they're unsure of how to mount their wheel effectively, I'd HIGHLY recommend the XL-21 wheel stand from Xlerator Wheelstands:

This thing is rock-solid on my couch, much more stable than I would ever have expected from a wheel stand. Plus it folds up (or lays flat) and stores really easily, since you can either stand it straight up and stick it in a corner, or lay it down and slide it under a table if you're not using it...and the support that Mike over there has given me in getting it set up has been well above and beyond anything I expected from something like this. I had read/watched some reviews online before buying it, and other than it not being really well suited for a heavy wheel like my CSR Elite out of the box, Mike has been more than accommodating and very quick in responding to help me get it up and going.
So I know some of you guys may race from your couch or have a less-than-ideal setup to run with. I couldn't recommend the XL-21 any more highly. It's made moving my wheel from PC to Xbox 360, from under-desk-configuration to couch setup seamless. I can have the whole thing up and set up in about 30 seconds.

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Looks like I'll be picking up some games from the Steam summer sale. One of the games on sale is Assetto Corsa. Anyone played it? How good/bad is the AI? Other pluses/minuses?
Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
I played it, but when I tried it, there WAS no AI at all. It drives pretty well, and it's a nice looking and sounding game, but it was essentially a test track or multiplayer, to my knowledge (and I never tried online, so I'm not even sure on that).
Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
An update a few months ago added AI opponents to Assetto Corsa, I believe. I have the game but haven't tried it much recently, so I couldn't comment on the quality of the AI at this point.
And FYI, Assetto Corsa might be in the next flash sale down to $20, so wait until 1 today to see if the price is lower than it is now.

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Assetto Corsa is easily worth any price below $30; definitely continues to improve in AI, multiplayer, and content. On the plus side is some tracks not always seen in other sims like Vallelunga and Magione.
Side Note: Since Milestone never released any Xbox 360 versions of their recent racing games in the US, I am also tracking the following potential sales on Steam. M
MXGP - The Official Motocross Videogame - $25.19 (37% off from $39.99)

MotoGP 14 - $39.99 (currently no sale price)

WRC 4 FIA World Rally Championship - $20.99 (30% off from $29.99)

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Don, MotoGP 14 was only released yesterday, so I don't know what the chances of seeing that on sale are. MotoGP 13 might be more likely and is worthy of your consideration if it should drop in price. I heard a rumour t'other day that Milestone have managed to put together a US distribution deal for '14, though I've no idea how true that is.
James, I bought Assetto Corsa a couple of sales ago but have only sat down to play it this weekend - PC upstairs, PS3 downstairs, wheel plugged into PS3, owner previously too bone-idle to move wheel. Tonight I attempted to run a 10 lap race at Imola in an M3 GT2 and the 6 laps I actually completed were big fun. Lap 7 saw me finally succeed in crashing through Acque Minerale, something I'd threatened several times previously but never quite managed, and it was all my fault - took too much speed in with me, had a bit too much brake on, lost the back and couldn't quite catch it in time. I've found the physics to be convincing, the tyre modelling great and the force feedback generally solid and communicative on the trusty old G25, these qualities combining to leave me in no doubt that I couldn't blame the game for that spin. What it's like on a newer wheel, I know not.
The AI aren't always the brightest bulbs at the start or in a pack race (they're excessively polite, which leads them to almost wait for each other on corner entry, like at those junctions on the daily commute where you know one of you has right of way but can't quite decide who) but get them alone and they actively seek out gaps, take advantage of mistakes and leave you enough racing room to compete fairly. I ran side by side for half a lap at Vallelunga last night in the Lotus T125 single-seater, during a 10 lap race which was big fun for the 6 laps I actually etc.
The one thing that's missing at the minute seems to be damage modelling. These retirements of mine have all followed accidents where the car has been fine afterwards and I've just wanted to start again so I'm in amongst the AI. I pranged a Lotus 49 on the way out of Ascari at classic Monza, bouncing off a car I hadn't seen on my outside before skittering into the fence at colossal speed, and just drove off as if nothing had happened. That'll come, no doubt, and I can live without it while I'm finding my way.

YEE-HAH!
Not necessarily the quickest way through Lesmo 1, I know, but find me a way that's more entertaining.
I went for the early access version of Bugbear's Next Car Game in this sale too. Not strictly sim, granted, but the handling is far more grounded in reality than you might expect and the racing is a riot.

Assetto Corsa on sale again at Steam this weekend for $20. I'm really enjoying the driving model in the game. Just wish there were a few more tracks.
Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Question - is buying Richard Burns Rally worth it? It's over ten years old but I assume it's still top dog for rallying. Has anyone touched the mods like RSRBR 2014? Graphically do those mods bring the game into the modern era? Also, getting physical media may be tough, so how is games planet (UK) for digital download from the US? Are they legit?
Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
I think it's still worth it. RBR is the equivalent to Grand Prix Legends in the physics dept. No other rally sim has been as lethal and frustrating as RBR. I purchased my game from Sold-Out.com and paid around $12. I think they are based in the UK and the game could be out of print. I've tried some of the add-on mods, some were decent, others were not. The core game is stellar though.F308GTB wrote:Question - is buying Richard Burns Rally worth it? It's over ten years old but I assume it's still top dog for rallying. If it is out of print you could try Brent Torrentski as his store is always open and he doesn't mind if you walk out, without paying.

Yes and yes. No rally sim has approached it, before or after its release. The absolute platinum, gold, silver and bronze standard for physics.F308GTB wrote:Question - is buying Richard Burns Rally worth it? It's over ten years old but I assume it's still top dog for rallying.

It's worth that, mate. It's not realism's last stand or anything approaching RBR for depth of handling, but it's hugely scaleable, you can set AI strength independently of handling aids to define your own difficulty setting and it's all very tidily presented, as with Milestone's recent Moto GP efforts. I paid slightly more than that for the PS3 version and don't feel as though I was robbed at all.

Re: Racing Sim Thread, Part II
Impressions of Assetto Corsa Release Candidate? I'm really enjoying the title. While the AI still needs a lot of work (pretty much sticks to the racing line, once you pass it's easy to gap), the physics are fantastic. Looking forward to tracks mods getting updated to run in 1.0 - haven't tried loading up the mods I installed pre-RC.
