I watched season one and did not enjoy the show as much as the books. The story was so fresh in my mind at that point that it felt like a waste of time. Also, the TV show was not able to produce the big epic scenes and battles depicted in the books. I'd probably be tempted to binge watch if the show catches up to the end of book five before book six comes out.

For those who have read the books and are watching on TV, wired.com has a good weekly recap that also points which parts of the show vary from the books.
Your reaction is typical of what I have heard from other book readers. It makes me want to bite the bullet and start reading. Maybe after this season is over. Wish there was an episode this Sunday!

I'll offer a differing opinion.

I watched season one of the show, loved it, and then started reading the books. Personally, I think the first season of the show was an improvement on the first book. I just found the characters came to life better on the TV show that in the books. They all became more relatable IMO.

I also went ahead and read the second and third books. After finishing the third book, I put them down. Without spoiling anything, the story reaches something of stopping point after the third book, and there is no clear momentum about where the story is going--many storylines are concluded or blown up. I didn't start the fourth book because I heard that it was mostly new characters and new storylines, where many main characters don't even appear. The story was already detrimentally expansive IMO.

The fact that the first 3 books were released in a 4 year period, and the last two books took 11 years since then and only marginally advanced the story forward tells me the author is going sideways with it.

Now the TV show is having to change more and more from the books, which I'll guess will continue.

If you want to get wrapped up in the details of battles and meals and the houses, the books will offer more. If you just want a good story, I'm not sure the incredibly voluminous books (the series is currently at over 5,000 pages) that seem to be treading water right now will be for everyone.

That was a brilliantly choreographed fight. Even after The Mountain got hold of him, I thought that he'd find some way to win the fight. I did not expect his head to go full-tilt Gallagher. 8O

Totally agree. That duel totally surpassed my expectations.

BYW, we don't know for sure that The Mountain is dead. He had enough life left in him to push a guy's eyeballs into his brain.
Either way, not sure how Tyrian is getting out of this one. I don't think they will kill him off, but he will need some pretty fancy
speech now to convince his father to let him live.

What a great episode! This show never disappoints. Brilliant!

I know right.

I thought the Mountain was just going to walk up and smash him while he was doing all his flips.

At least cut off his hands before demanding his confession, to totally dominate the fight and lose like that, ugh. Was hoping he would have won and had a couple of daggers to throw into Tywin and Cersei, especially Cersei to wipe that joyful smirk off of her face.

There's a good shot of Tyrion making a 'c'mon, end it' face.

I actually that was a weaker episode, but the duel scene at the end was entertaining and dramatic enough to make it a memorable episode.

took me a while to realized that guy was THE MOUNTAIN. I guess they changed the actor from the last time we saw him chopping the head of the horse off. That guy who played mountain was bad ass looking and looked more like the brother to the hound.

This new Mountain guy looks like the guy who played Curly in the 3 Stooges Movie. The guy from MAD TV. He looks nothing like the hound and nobody would think they'd be related.

Why couldn't they keep the actor who played the original mountain?

It's amazing that a show can be so over-the-top that the ending makes you forget a close-up of a flaying victim that happened only 30 minutes before.

Also, the actress who played Oberyn's squeeze let out one of the best acting screams I've ever heard. I almost thought his head had really done an imitation of a deep-sea sub that sprung a leak.

Couple of alternate endings to the Oberyn/Mountain fight.
