This song is as familiar as "Free Bird" by a bad cover band or "American Pie" near closing time on a jukebox. It's inevitable that a cheap shot or cheap shots become the major talking point of almost every playoff series in the NHL.

Call me a p*ssy, but does the sport really need this? Do playoff series need head shots and knee-on-knee contact to percolate? But it seems that's what the NHL brass condones and what a majority of fans need to stir their ire, so that's what both get.

Why is Olympic hockey so compelling without this stuff? Does nationalism really breed that much more passion than team tribalism without cheap shots?

Pretty sad. Combine this with "message sending" scuffles after nearly every big, CLEAN hit, and my interest in the NHL is ebbing, big time. Glad you cats are enjoying it, though -- seriously.

NHL players can send a much clearer, better message -- just play the f*cking game by the rules. It's such a glorious sport without all of this bullsh*t.

You'll be back on the NHL wagon again, once your Oilers get it figured it out. Might be a while though...

My epitaph: He died at age 97 after a long, fruitless hope for a sixth Oilers' Stanley Cup ring. :)

You're probably right, Tim. Still, the lack of respect in the NHL either continues to rise, bothers me as I age or both.

The NHL rules are so toothless that it breeds more cheap bullsh*t. If Bettman and Shanahan had any sack and were serious about player safety, they would put Seabrook on the shelf for the rest of the playoffs.

That NEVER will happen.

What a dumb, costly mistake by the Rangers trying to get the 6th men at the end of the game. Good come back for the Flyers, who finally take a W at MSG.

And as I was saying earlier, the league just gives 3 games for Seabrook's launching into Backes.

Nice win for the Flyers.

If Seabrook had grabbed his own nuts after that hit he would have gotten a 15 game suspension.

The NHL loves its head hits. Their fantastic!

Good for Brendan Smith. Don't worry about Goliath Chara, this tilt may still happen in the next 40 minutes. Bruins in control after 20, as Wings are getting sucked into their way of play. Stay disciplined.

Nice effort by the boys. That penalty probably wouldn't have mattered but we'll never know.

It's the PK Subban show. Dude should play forward only. TPA without Stamkos is not looking good. Hope he's ok.

I had the Sharks winning the CA series but not as easy as they've come. They are making the Kings look slow. Wow, the 'Beat LA' chant is an understatement at this point. More like Thrash LA, even the Raffi Torres line is hot.

3 games for Seabrook is not how I would do it, but the NHL has made (excruciatingly slow) progress.

Remember when this wasn't even a minor penalty?

No excuse, especially considering how much more is known about the ramifications of concussions today compared to 2003. IV drip progress is not cause for celebration.

The NHL might suspend Matt Cooke for a shift for this knee-to-knee hit. And once again, a cheap shot will become the talking point of yet another series:

What about this hit enhances the game? I'm all eyes and ears.

OK, I'm done. Sorry. I just hate to see a great sport ruined by this repeated bullsh*t. I'll also admit my tolerance of it is much less than in the past.

Hawks played like crap that 3rd period but won. All the games this series have been close. It was nice to see the Hawks not celebrating like they won the cup after game 3.

I can understand (not condone) why an unscrupulous player would administer a hit to the head of his opponent. However, why would he choose a knee-to-knee hit since he would have a high risk of injuring his own knee as well? :?

The Cooke knee should have been an automatic 5 major and since the zebras missed it, the new sheriff in town shouldn't and he will be suspended for at least 5 games due to his history. Some bad calls for sure in this game. Even the OT winner by Granlund was a beauty, Avs should have received a delayed of game when they were already on a PP, which would have given them a 5 on 3. Come on, how could all 4 refs miss that call?

The lack of respect is what pisses me the most at this time of the year. There are going to be cheap shots that's a given, but there's no respect whatsoever. When you look at the DAL-ANA game for example, it's incredible how gutless a few guys are trying to jab at Geztlaf already sore jaw. Protection and all, they kept aiming at his face and please don't come and tell me it's part of the game.

An apt quote; "Baseball must be a great game to survive the fools that run it."

I just take what I can and hope it continues to move in the right direction regarding discipline.
