The Marty St Louis move to the Rangers for R. Callahan is done. Will Gaborik leave NY?

Gaborik left NY last year. :P

I think CLB already decided to part with him a few weeks ago, and sounds like LA deal is all but done.

Been a pretty exciting trade deadline so far!

Right, I was thinking of Richards in NY. About Gaborik going west it makes a lot of sense especially to LA where they've had problems scoring.

OK, I understand Hemsky is no longer the player who never came close to fulfilling his potential. But dumping him for a third-round and fifth-round pick, and picking up the tab for half of his remaining salary?

Kevin Lowe proves yet again he's the most idiotic front-office man in hockey. He must have pictures of owner Daryl Katz f*cking a herd of goats. Potential blackmail must be the only way Lowe keeps his job.

The rumors before the Olympic break were that the Kings were discussing a trade with the Oilers for Hemsky and the sticking point was paying for half his salary so it would fit under the cap. Oilers passed on it. Wonder what the Kings package looked like compared to this one. That's assuming the rumors were even true.

how about the breakdown on the Islanders trade. The end results of the Vanek trade.

Islanders give a 1st and 2nd round pick for a prospect and a conditional 2nd round pick! That kind of deal wouldn't even cut it in my fantasy hockey league!

Isles fans just witnessed Garth Snow surpassing Mike Milbury as the worst GM in their history and probably League history. Nice deal for the Habs.

I do not understand how this guy still has a job. The Islanders have been terrible for so many years now. They surprised some people last year but I think this season proves that they really aren't anywhere close to being a great team. Imagine if they were in the western conference. They would't have even made the playoffs last year.

I actually don't think he's been that awful, given their unwillingness to spend, nor do I think the Vanek result is a fiasco.

They basically lose a first round pick for 4 months of Thomas Vanek. They brought in Vanek to boost their chances this year and turn around their poor start. It didn't work. But it's not all that different from when team trades first round picks at the deadline for a playoff rental then loses in the first round. It's the chances you take, and it's not unreasonable. You take a risk, trade assets for a temporary boost to save a season, and you win some and you lose some.

For me, it's nowhere close to Mad Mike's greatest hits.
-Jokinen and Luongo for Parrish and Kvasha
-McCabe, Bertuzzi and pick for Linden
-Chara, Muckalt and #2 pick (Spezza) for Yashin--for whom the Isles are STILL paying on his buyout

Personally I think the GM looking the worst is Gillis in Vancouver. How epically did he screw up Luongo situation over last 1.5 years? And now he walks away from frenzied bidding for Kesler? He better hit a home run on this in the summer...

There is a difference between trading a late first round pick for a guy who can solidify your playoff spot and possibly make you a true contender vs surrendering a potential high 1st round pick in a desperate attempt to jump start a team at the bottom of the standings. Many criticized the deal originally because they felt the Isles needed defense more than a forward and while Vanek is certainly better than Moulson he's not THAT much better.

Not sure if he's inability to trade the 'Nucks best asset at this point is necessarily a bad tning considering where the team is at. A couple of points here and there and they are right back fighting for a playoff spot which I mentioned is not totally out of sight but very difficult to achieve in the tough western conference.

The Sharks were in a very similar position not long ago where the fans just wanted to get rid of guys like Marleau, Thornton, but with a couple of young retools, they are still a very competitive team to watch. Gillis must have asked for a younger centreman that can play both ways, a prospect and a first rounder. Not outrageous for the type of player that Kes is.

He can't control the ridiculous amount of injuries that have affected the team this season, and with Luongo's albatross contract out of the way, although the team does retain about 15% of his salary, Gillis will be able afford some free agents once the season is over.

The goal is to look for younger players that can mesh with the current crop and with a bigger cap next year, this team can still compete for a couple of more years if Kesler remains a Canucks.

I agree that he totally mishandled the Luongo affair a couple of years ago and questions will arise again this summer for his vision and leadership once the playoffs are out of reach.

He may still get the minimum requirement for Kesler this summer but I wasn't totally dissapointed that he remained a Canuck as disappointed as I felt a year ago for his inability to move Luongo.

I am kind of making conversation here more than anything, but you see the things teams do at the deadline to get a guy to play a dozen regular season games and 5 or 6 playoff games then walk away after first round loss.

The initial Vanek trade may have been overpayment, but risking a pick or prospects in an attempt to push a team over the hump is something that happens every year, usually with poor results of not going very far in the playoffs or the player never fitting in. Every GM has done it.

I recall last year when making my playoff picks, I thought the Isles were the 3rd best team in the East come playoff time so it's not delusional to think they were a far way off from shaping up this season.

As for Gillis, we don't know what he turned down, but word is there 6 teams making serious pitches. I can totally understand the idea of trading a big salary star in the offseason, but given the way the man butchered the Luongo situation when he wanted out, I am skeptical.

It would take Snow some time to match the lunacy of Kevin Lowe. OK, Lowe is team president. But the Oilers haven't made the playoffs since losing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to Carolina in 2006 despite having three consecutive No. 1 overall picks.

The Islanders have made the playoffs under Snow in the last seven seasons. 'Nuff said.

Here are the differences between Luongo and Kesler. The centreman specialist has two more years left in his contract at a very attractive 5 million per. According to Kes, he never asked for a trade and ultimately if there's a deal to be done in the summer, he would have to have a big say as to which team he'd rather go.

Rumors are that the Ducks were this close of making a deal for him, but you have to wonder if trading a guy to the same division would back fire you big time. There won't be any lack of interest for his services when the season is over.

Luongo literally had an untradable contract, he even admitted that his contract sucked. Who's fault was it? You can blame it 100% on Gillis on that one as he misjudged the market waiting and asking for more in return when no other team could afford such a big salary cap. There's still another 7-8 years left in his contract.

All eyes will be on Gillis this summer, make no mistakes, he could have gotten more also from the Schneider deal during the last draft IMO.

Canucks hit rock bottom last night against a team they don't see often and were embarrassed in the 3rd period. Winning 3-0 to open the last 20 minutes, they start running into penalty problems and the Isles made them pay for every single infraction. Eddie Lack showed he was indeed a rookie, and this fragile team just stopped playing. Seven goals in one period alone? Not since the days of Wayne Gretzky and the rest of the mighty Oilers have I seen this type of embarrassment. Has this team tuned out J. Tortorella since his meltdown in the locker room against Calgary? Dude is at the beginning of a 5 year contract, I was never in agreement with his hiring but you kind of have to ride with him with that long term.

Depending on what happens to Kesler this summer, Gillis' a$$ is on the line too and if he's fired, Torts day's will be numbered too.

Flyers are really putting it together. This whole season I've been fairly certain in my mind that they are a borderline playoff team, one-and-done at best, but over the last 2 months they've put it together and it looks like they could definitely beat anyone in the East (Boston would be a very very tough task though).
