That would piss me off too, but hasn't happened. BTW, I'm pretty sure you can play whatever game you want and whatever patches will download and install in the background (PS4 anyway).
Did I say I couldn't play the game? Lets say I am going to play Madden and a patch for Madden is downloading and maybe a system update at the same time. If I start playing Madden the patching stops, if I just want the Madden patch to download and it not to split the download between both patched I can't and unless I am mistaken if a patch doesn't fully download and I turn off the system it starts the download from the beginning the next time. Are you telling me if you go into a game the patched continue to download?
I do not have the time to play my PS4 everyday anymore, I get on once or twice a week and it seems there is usually several patches waiting a lot of times.

I can't pause one, it's very frustrating. On the XB1 the system updates are stupid as well, you machine boots up to a black screen and maybe a single status bar on downloading with no indication what is going on.
I don't get it. Tell me 15, 10 or even 5 years ago the quality of games and entertainment that we are getting from these boxes and I wouldn't have believed you. I was still consistently blown away by how great things looked in GTA V or how much fun a night with 5 guys playing FIFA together could be on the last generation, and things on XB1 are uniformly better so far.
Regular system updates or long download times suck, but 9 times out of 10 I'm happy to shrug them off for the amount of hours of fun I'm getting out of the system. Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age, but for a guy who grew up playing 3v3 shaky-ass Atari football, it's hard for me to get exorcised about lack of Twitch integration at launch or having to wait 3 minutes for the console to load a system update.
I'm not sure what one has to do with the other. I think the games are fine, I'm not so blown away by the jump in graphics because I've seen better on the PC neither of which has anything to do with my complaint of a crappy interface. I don't want to delete a game like Shadowfall because I might go back to it, but I don't want it updating either. Why can't I tell it not to update that game?
I'm sorry if my lack for a decent UI that doesn't do things I don't want to do offends you but it doesn't change the fact that it bothers me. If I want to play Madden and their is a patch I'm fine waiting for that, I don't want it slowed down by the system downloading 2 other updates at the same time.
I guess I misunderstood this post. I understood it to you mean that you couldn't play other games because you were waiting for a game like Shadowfall to update when you wanted to play Madden. I'm not sure how that's slowing you down.
As for system updates themselves... I don't think you can play anything else while they're downloading. However, if you leave the system in StandBy mode, they'll download automatically and you just need to install it the next time you login.
For those who had to send in their PS4s to repair back to sony, do they send you a new one? I read some people got a new box and a controller with it. Or do they send you a refurb?

Don't think anyone has had to send theirs back to Sony yet. Mine was swapped out via Amazon since it was in the return window still.

It's 50/50 but your chances of getting a new one is better now. Because their inventory is low and when they get a legitimate defective PS4 they'll be trying to figure out the cause without sending them back out to customers.
I guess I will live with it. Guy on the phone said the replacement will take a month to get to me since inventory is low. If I just leave the console on standby it works fine. It's just if I leave it off overnight or for days it acts up and I can only turn it on with the Eject button.
I'm starting to really hate the day 1 digital stuff. I can also see why both consoles want to have games downloadable. Just dropped 110 on bf4 and premium on a whim. Had it at launch and sold it since everyone was having so many problems with servers. Now that it's a bit more stable it made sense to rebuy it. Yeah...110 later I've got it. Out of nowhere. Ugh. Probably wouldn't have bought it had I needed to make a trip to the store. Jerks.

Lol. Nice. I'm shocked I've been able to lay off Tomb Raider and PvZ. All my XB1 games are digital so far. Probably shouldn't have seeing as how I haven't touched Dead Rising and Forza since week one.

I'd have jumped on Tomb Raider about five times but then I remember I have it on the PC. Haha. Good luck.

Exactly why I thought the xb1 plan was great and the reason Steam continues to get at least $30 of my money each month.
Inuyasha wrote:for those who keep their PS4's in standby mode all the time, do you experience any issues?
I've started the last few nights and no problems so far.
Also, how much energy does it use when it's on standby?
I have had it standby most days since January. No issues, it's not really any different than the state the XB1 gets left in. It does use more power but I don't think it's a lot. There are power use stats online if you search.
Woke up with it this morning. Still a lame update process. It doesn't boot up to voice (I finally got a Genie yesterday, so I'm back to Instant On), so you power it up to nothing. then after a minute or so, I get a green progress bar. Then it boots up 30 seconds later. Painless, but done in a way that it is inviting folks to restart in the middle of the process.
I still have not upgraded my controller. Do I need to do both?

I'll bite what does this mean? How do you upgrade your controller?
I think it's essentially a firmware update so it can use the new headset adapter. You go to settings/system and will see an option to upgrade controller. You have to connect the controller to the xbox with a USB cable.

Apparently it also upgrades the sensitivity of the analog sticks as per the request of the Titanfall developer:
