Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Those are your motherboard SATA ports. It looks like you have a total of 6 SATA ports 0-5. Your SSD is plugged into SATA port #0 and your "???" is plugged into SATA port #1. Which is fine because they are on opposite channels i.e. odd/even.
Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Mystery solved. There's a broken connector on the SATA port of the HDD.

After all that, you could have built your own sh*t quicker, and saved some pennies. Lesson learned.RobVarak wrote:Mystery solved. There's a broken connector on the SATA port of the HDD.

That's really odd--you'd think they'd have found that during QC stages. I would think one of the steps would be verifying that the drives that the customer purchased showed up in Windows.

Tech guy wasn't surprised. Said they do, but that it was likely damaged during shipment.TCrouch wrote:That's really odd--you'd think they'd have found that during QC stages. I would think one of the steps would be verifying that the drives that the customer purchased showed up in Windows.

All worked out ok. I got to take 24 hours of frustration out on every manager who tried to deny that they were going to pick up the tab for overnight shipping. They must have thought that $25 was the last thing i had in my wallet, the way I laid into them. I was kind as could be to the lower level employees, but a couple managers heard some colorful turns of phrase.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
That is bullshit. Some of the new SATA connectors on the HDD are a real b*tch to get the connector on. Sometimes you have to literally force it on, to the point you think something is going to break. I had that with one of my Steam Box HDD's. They probably broke it forcing it on.RobVarak wrote:Tech guy wasn't surprised. Said they do, but that it was likely damaged during shipment.![]()
Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Absolutely agree. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Everything else is humming along nicely. I've got access to everything I need in the cloud. As I said earlier, I had zero expectations regarding Windows 8 and I'm finding it fairly brilliant.Rodster wrote:That is bullshit. --Edit--
The war for the desktop real estate between MS and Chrome is pretty bizarre. It's crazy how Google basically uses the browser to trojan horse the Chrome OS onto the machine. I like it though. Best of both.

Sorry to hear about the sh!tshow with your new PC, Rob. Reminds me just how much of a horseshoe I've had up my ass when it's come to PCs in the last few years - been really lucky so far.

Vanilla Civ 5? I have Civ 5 GOTY version without the expansion packs. I'll take Torchlight as I bought TC2 on Steam.Danimal wrote:BTW if anyone in the world doesn't have Civ 5 or Torchlight on Steam I have free copies sitting in my inventory.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Someone claimed the Civ 5 they just need to PM me their Steam id, if you want Torchlight PM me your steam id. I have a lot of DSP users on my Steam friends list but f*** if I know who is who.
I also apparently have 3 copies of Renegade Ops, I have no idea how I have these because I bought a 4 pack a while back and gave 3 away but they are sitting there. So if anyone wants those that didn't claim Civ 5 of TL, PM me your Steam ID

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
New machine showed up, and it's (expectedly) awesome. But recently my wireless receiver for 360 controllers burned out, which had me looking around to find out if I could use a DS4 with my PC. Turns out, you can, and it's pretty badass. The native drivers don't work, but this dude wrote an application that "fakes" your computer into thinking the controller is a 360 pad--and you can even use the touchscreen on the DS4 as a mouse touchpad, which is a trip. So if anybody else that games on PC likes the PS4 Dual Shock 4 Controller, this will work. I tested it with Crysis 3, NASCAR 14, Witcher 2, and everything worked flawlessly.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Sweet...thanks Terry. That's awesome.
Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Anytime! I was stunned, too. I tried using one of those "Gamestop wired 360" controllers, not the official one as my local Gamestop doesn't sell them anymore--and the stick sensitivity and all sorts of crap just felt "off". It had little-to-no deadzone, and the sticks would seem to drift from time to time, sensitivity was weird, etc.
But that DS4 is butta. Very precise and I've obviously been on record as saying it's a phenomenal controller anyway...so just treating it like a 360 controller is easy. Square is X, X is A, etc.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Looking to buy/build a moderate/budget gaming PC (maybe $5-600?) and catch up on some pc games I've missed over the last few years (civ 5, etc). I'm confident I could put a new pc together myself but I'm pretty out of the loop on what components are actually worth buying. Am I better off buying something prebuilt like this from newegg?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883258078
I also threw this together based on some info on lifehacker/reddit
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3tnvs
I'm not looking for someone to bother putting a whole config together for me but maybe just some general ideas?

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
So about 2 months ago I purchased an SSD drive 250 Gig with the plan of transfering Windows OS to the drive and using my other 3 drive for storage and games etc. I've never gotten around to doing this mainly because I've been nervous to attemtp this and many people tell me to install windows fresh but I only have the Windows 7 upgrade. Since then the prices on SSD's have dropped and I can get a 1TB pretty cheap and pretty much clone my drive as is.
Here comes my question, I have not hit that little thing in my task bar to reserve Windows 10 because I wasn't sure how it worked. Should I finally do my SSD cloning before doing that, does it even matter? Should I get a 1 TB SSD and clone the whole drive or just clone Windows to my 250 Gig, is that even big enough for what I am wanting to do.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Do not clone, seriously. You will have all sorts of little niggling issues going forward and you'll pull your hair out trying to find the culprit.
And, the Windows 7 upgrade disc is nooooo problem. Use Method #2 from the link below:
http://winsupersite.com/article/windows ... dia-128512
Definitely grab the 1TB if you can find a deal. I bought a 256 a few years back when I did my SSD conversion from platters and I'm regretting it now. I can only have a few games installed along w/ my regular stuff, so I'm holding out a bit longer and then I'll do the same, getting at least a 512gb (since those are less than 200 bucks now) or bigger.
So yeah...moral of the story...reinstall Windows 7 on the new 1TB drive you pick up...then do the Windows 10 reservation thing (which is ANNOYING AS HELL in the notification tray).

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Once again looking for some advice. I did install a 1 TB SSD drive, fresh windows 7 install got everything working. The issue I am having is it's plugged into a SATA 2 port. I have a SATA 3 port opn my machine but when I plug in the SSD the Bios doesn't see the drive. I've updated my bios, turned on the SATA3 port, tried 6GB cables (even though that shouldn't matter) and followed every GD tip I could find on the internet.
While I can run on the SATa 2 port at 3Gb, I would really like to run on the SATA 3 port at 6Gb. I'm just out of ideas on what I could possibly be missing.

Re: OT: PC Gaming Hardware Thread
Well I'm mainly talking to myself but will continue in case someone wants to jump in. So I managed to get the SSD hooked up correctly and then installed Windows 10 on it. I'd previouslly forced the Windows 10 install on 3 laptops so I wasn't expecting trouble on my gaming rig.
Everything went fine but I couldn't get any sound out of my creative card. After much time thinking something was not configured correctly it appears Creative cards don't work in Windows 10 and creative is supposedly coming out with new drivers over the next several months. I just hooked up to the mobo built in sound which is fine.
