Your Game of the Year 2013

Post by Sudz »

Was curious to know your top 3 games of the past year.

1. Last of Us: Great story. Great settings. I did find myself enjoying the combat with the humans better than with all the "monsters". I'm hoping for a sequel.

2. Tomb Raider: Another surprise. Engrossing story and a fun game. I'm picking up the updated version for the Next Gen systems.

3. Madden 25: I played through a few season on my 360 and then a few more so far on my Xbox One.

Honorable Mentions:
NHL 14 (great game and pick for sports game of the year. I just burned out a bit having played probably 2000 games in the past 3 years of the series)
RYSE (Fun game, but just fights for play time with all the other games I have)
GTAV (Great game, but needs more single player missions)

1. The Last of Us (PS3), and it's not even close.
2. Diablo 3 (360) wins the award for most time spent on a single console game this year for me.
3. Assassin's Creed 4 is what I'd call that "almost" game. It's so great that it would always be in the discussion any year, but there would always be a couple of games that were better.

Still loving it, but these long stealth missions are awful. Not badly executed, but completely break up the rhythm of the open world stuff that makes the game really hum. I understand it's an AC game, but I wish there were at least a bit of warning when I was going to start a mission that it was going to be an entire evening of creeping around the jungle rather than pirating.

I need to look back on everything I played and come up with a list. Been a great year for sure.

GTA V
Bioshock Infinite
Far Cry 3
Tomb Raider
NHL 14
FTL

These aren't so much the best games of the year (FC3 and FTL are 2012 games), but basically they are the only games I played this year in any depth. :)

Last of Us.

There were most assuredly other very good games I enjoyed this past year, but Last of Us was so far superior in my opinion that there's no need for any list. Frankly, I think it's the best game of this whole, long 360/PS3 generation, and this from a guy who's played the Mass Effect games through multiple times (especially the first one) and is right now playing through Dragon Age Origins and its DLC as we speak instead of enjoying the amazing (and much, much more recent, shiny and new) GTA V or the cheap download of Batman Arkham City I bought a month or so ago. :D

FIFA 14, GTAV, NCAA 14.

Sadly, two of those are only on last gen, which I've said goodbye to.

1) NCAA 14 (It has to go here because there was not a single game I played more)
2) Forza 5 (Drivatars have created the most fun I've had in a racing game in a long, long time)
3) Tomb Raider (fantastic reboot, and I can't wait to play more)

I really didn't have a "game of the year" this year. Nothing really grabbed me by the balls and said lets play this every single night. Last of Us, as mentioned, was good...so was GTAV and Dishonored...but I quickly sold each because I got bored eventually. Both NBA 2k14 and MLB The Show 13 were fantastic, but nothing earth shattering and new. Hopefully this year will bring more "new" franchises that actually excite me a little bit more than the yearly polish and roster updates of the annual sports titles.

10. Brothers (PC)
- this game surprised the hell out of me. I only played it last week but just fell in love with it. It only takes 3 hours to finish but every moment was great and the ending was fantastic

9. DMC: Devil May Cry (PC)
- F&*K the haters, I thought this was an awesome reboot. It's too bad we'll probably never get to see Ninja Theory make a sequel.

8. Bioshock: Infinite (PC)
- amazing world, great story, but not enough (or any) variety to the gameplay - if there was just a tad more exploration rather than shoot-anything-that-moves this would have been my number one game

7. Tomb Raider (PC)
- looks phenomenal on the PC and plays even better, a brilliant reboot

6. State of Decay (360)
- just brilliant RPG + Zombie Survival

5. Saints Row IV (PC)
- it's like Crackdown...on crack

4. Rogue Legacy (PC)
- it's coming to PS4 and Vita next year apparently and I hope more get to play this game, it's f***in incredible and my favourite indie game of the year

3. GTA V (360)
- just an absolutely incredible game world that Rockstar created

2. Battlefield 4 (PC and XBONE)
- the XBONE version has been broken for me but the PC version has been solid after the last few patches and looks in-freakin-credible. I just can't get enough of BF4 on the PC.

1. The Last of Us (PS3)
- I'll echo what Zeppo said; before I played The Last of Us I thought Mass Effect 2 was a lock for my favorite game of the console generation, now I'm not so sure. It's just a masterpiece.

Honorable mention:
Gunpoint (PC) - would have broken my top 10 if it weren't for Brothers
Papers Please (PC)
Cart Life (PC)
The Stanley Parable (so funny) (PC)
Metro: Last Light (PC)
Rayman Legends (360)!!!!
Forza: Horizon (360)
Remember Me (PC)

I'm with DB... besides NHL 13 (which is last years game) nothing has really had my uninvited attention this year..

NHL 13 and NCAA 14 were excellent.. I played more NHL 13 than I've ever played any NHL game, NHL 14 has yet to grow on me and I'm kind of missing NHL 13. :)

FOF 7 and OOTP 14 for the pc are great.

Pandora for the pc is another one I've played a ton of.

I think I only bought three new games last year. A new record low for me and by a huge margin!

GTA V

NHL 14

F1 2013

1. Fifa 14 (PS4) Silky smooth, more intelligent A.I., plays beautifully.

2. Super Mario 3D World. Really amazing level design, a game that has me grinning from ear to ear every time I play it, and has fantastic local multi-player (some of, if not the best gaming sessions with my kids in a long time).

3. The Last of Us. Just a phenomenal game that has me very excited about upcoming Sony exclusives.

4. MLB 14 The Show.....looking forward to how this game continues to grow on the PS4. Cannot freakin' wait for the new release!

Macca,
Just curious, What do you use as your main controller these days for your PC gaming? Mainly keyboard/mouse for FPS still, or do you use a controller for games like Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, etc. I missed the $9.99 Tomb Raider deal on Steam and somehow never realized it was such a good game. The original Tomb Raider was what forced me to buy a Rendition Verite graphics card for my PC.

PS - Since I have seen many late 2012 games in the list I will add that my most played game of 2013 was Forza Horizon, by far.

1.NHL 14...nothing groundbreakingly new but the online EAHL games with the boys were/are awesome.
2.MLB The Show...always on my list because it's done so well. VERY ANXIOUS to see MLB The Show on
PS4
3.BF4 on the XB1 has had its hiccups but I've had some of my best gaming this year with it.
4.Assassins Creed Black Flag (PS4)...gorgeous game I'm still scratching the surface with but it has been
my biggest surprise of the year (thanks Teal :D)
5. GTAV...for all the reasons you are thinking. The only thing that would make it better would be if it
were next gen.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Gone Home.

I'm just now playing Last of Us, though. Still early on in that one.

Chaps - I use a 360 controller (wired when I'm at my desk and wireless when I'm on the couch) and it works perfectly. Most PC games (like those ones you mentioned) even use the 360 controller prompts in-game. I know it's sacrilege but I even use the 360 controller for Battlefield 4.

Stick with it, after that amazing intro it's pretty slow until you leave Boston.
