XB1 - can use two AAs or the play and charge (rechargeable) kit.

PS4 - built in rechargeable (but has pretty poor battery life at around 6-8 hours per charge)
Do the 360 rechargeable batteries in the play and charge kit work on XB1 game pads?

Thanks in advance....

Microsoft wants $25 for one rechargeable battery with a charge (and play) cable.

For $20, Nyko has 2 batteries with a charge (and play) cable:

BB does sell a stationed PS4 charger for the controllers for around $20. I'll probably invest in one sooner than later. When I game alone, I always have one of the controllers tethered to the cable that goes to the PS4. That way, it's always charged. I assume they sell longer cables as the one that came with the system is maybe 4 feet long.

What is nice is when your controller does go out, it's as simple as picking up the charged controller, pressing the PS button and you're ready to resume your game.

Picked up the PS4 camera for the kids...and well, myself. Had 20 dollars in certficates, so for $40, I figure they'll get some enjoyment out of the Playroom, and I'm hoping the face recognition log in id works consistently. Plus, I'm betting on Sony puttting forth a little more effort and investment in to the camera along with the voice recognition. Maybe my son will get in to the video streaming too if we can figure it out.

I agree with Danimal about the MS UI, even though I haven't experienced it myself. When Windows 8 introduced the tiles, I thought to myself "well, they're trying to compete with Mac, but it also seems they're trying to position themselves to be more hip and friendly". I don't think they realized how much they alienated the older generation. I do think eventually we'll all grow more comfortable with the interface, but there will be growing pains. Everything I've read is that while it's possible to use the controller to move around the UI, voice control makes it a heck of a lot easier and seamless. I vividly remember reading an article that stated that the XBox One UI is going is not going to be fully realized for even months after launch, and that does appear to be the case.

The more I experience the PS4, the more appreciative I am of how simplistic it really is. It does kind of remind me of a PS3.5 though. I'm surprised Sony couldn't have implemented this kind of UI on the PS3 during it's mid cycle. Looking back now, it really is astounding how set in their ways Sony really was. I'm hopeful they'll keep things relatively the same, but be a bit more forward thinking this generation. I'm confident the user experience will only get better and better on the Xbox One.

Thanks. I'm leaning to PS4 right now based upon this thread. Looks like MS is forcing us to buy all new hardware to support the XB1 and the power and simplicity of the PS4 is making me consider switching for the first time since the original XBox....

The fact that they f*cked everyone over with the audio portion of the system is really the part that pisses me off. No true surround sound via HDMI for TV...no support of older headset systems that cost hundreds of dollars...the list goes on. Yes, those will both be rectified eventually, but at a cost of course (adapter). With the PS4...you can use ANY headset with a microphone or your big bad ass surround headphone system. That's how it should be.

I got the PowerA dual charger and it works perfectly. Always have one charging and can just drop it in when I'm done.

It's out of stock on Amazon but I got mine at Walmart for 20 bucks.

That's not true. It's technically Beta, which I've seen speculated as because they are still negotiating with Dolby.

Go to TV & One Guide-->Troubleshooting and you will have the option to turn on Surround sound (Beta)

Then go to Display & sound and make sure HDMI audio is set to 5.1 or 7.1. I have Optical set to DTS Dolby Surround, but I'm not using it for anything right now.

What you get is an uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 sound that is fed into your receiver.

Over HDMI, that has not been my experience. With the Beta option set, I get 2.0 from my DirecTV DVR to my AV system, although I'm pretty certain games are 5.1. I believe I've read anecdotally of other people having issues from DTV, though, and I'm optimistic MS will work it out. In the meantime, I'm splitting the HDMI before the One.

I always play seasons with a fantasy draft. Ended up with Rose at the 5th pick overall. Makes for some surreal moments when you're playing against Durant on the Raptors etc.

You can buy a usb extension cable for like $5-10, when the controller runs low I simply plug it into the cable and keep playing. My cable is like 10 feet long.

That's what I used to have for the DS3, a long cable, but they changed from a micro to a mini USB port, or vice versa. Think it was like $5-10 from Amazon.

Also kind of a drag, most USB chargers won't work to charge the DS4 (or DS3) because they look for a USB host controller, which most mobile device chargers won't have.

They work with computers USB ports and looks like when you put the PS4 in standby mode, it will also charge the DS4. Don't know if the PS3 in standby mode charged the DS3.

You can find them cheaper on Ebay. I bought a 3-pack of 6 ft micro usb charge/sync cables for $4.95 shipped

I do the same thing. It's fun to see LeBron on the Mavs & Kobe on the T-Wolves.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion

Post by Dave »

This thread has been a fun read.

I really like playing games on the Xbox One. The controller is great for Forza and doesn't feel cheap to me, maybe if I had a PS4 to compare it to it would feel worse. I don't mind looking at the Xbox One menu. The customized colors give it a nice look. It is easy enough to put a game in the system and start up a single player experience.

However, outside of that I'm finding the system can be a real pain in the ass. I wondered about a battery meter and figured it would pop up with a warning if the batteries got low (I got a play and charge and have charged it frequently), but now I know not to expect that. That's just unacceptable.

Something I learned tonight that's poorly implemented--I redeemed a code Microsoft sent me for a 2011 McLaren MP4-12C online the other day and went looking for it in the game. I didn't see anything and thought it might take a while to show up in the garage, no big deal. A couple days later, still no McLaren and I couldn't figure out a good way for me to see if it had even been credited to my profile (doesn't show up as a transaction since it is free). After searching online, I figured it out. I have to go to the game on the main menu and press whatever the button with the 3 lines on it is called. There, I can bring up the add-ons I have for the game. Ta-da, there's my McLaren waiting for me to install it before I can use it. Installing it kicked me right into "Your games & apps" so I had to go back into that screen to install the second piece of content I had waiting to install. This whole process seems pretty dumb to me, the content should just install itself when I turn on the system after I redeem it online.

And the less I say about voice commands, the better. Not really a fan of talking to the TV when there are people sharing the room or nearby trying to do something other than watching me play games.

I'm sure the experience will get better over time and all of the system and non-gaming stuff isn't so frustrating that I am not enjoying owning it. After reading all of the PS4 impressions, I do kinda wish that I didn't enjoy the Forza series so much though. It was a system seller for me, the extra $100 and Kinect be damned.

I set up the Playstation Camera and it works quite well. The face recognition log-in works seamlessly (I was able to set up a sub account for my son using the face recognition very easily), the kids love the tech demos in the Playroom... albeit it will be short lived, and the voice recognition is pretty responsive as well. May try to stream something this weekend. Hope Sony continues to add suport for the camera.

I think I've asked this in one form or another but have not seen any answer...

Does the PS4 automatically record/DVR game highlights like the XB1 does? Is that something that is programmed into the game or is it on the system (maybe it happens alongside an achievement?)? I see sports game highlights a lot in my XB1 friends feed and also know that when you level up in BF it gets recorded and shared. My hole in one in Powerstar Golf was also automatically recorded. Is this just an XB1 feature?

Hitting the share button allows you to upload things it's recorded.

for more info:

http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-576 ... station-4/

"Recording
The PlayStation 4 is always recording gameplay, whether you like it or not. The system will create a video clip of the previous 15 minutes of your gameplay once you hit the Share button. This clip can then be edited, saved, and shared with others from the share menu.

Audio from your microphone can be enabled on video clips by entering the share settings and selecting the video clip settings."

If you hit share, you can choose to edit the video clip. So it's recording everything. I've only livestreamed and haven't tried to upload video shots, but based on everything I've read, you just double-tap share to start a specific record point, or edit the previous 15 minutes to create a clip of your desired spot.
