Re: NFL 2013-14
Good road win for the Hawks against the Falcons. The last couple of wins were rather miracles ones if you will, considering the amount of injuries the OL has suffered so far as R. Wilson was being bounced around. With Rice out for the year, people started to doubt if this team could really play the way they did in the first half.
Harvin is just around the corner, Lynch continued to run people over and the D played their usual stingy game again.
49'ers were upset, it's all good.

The Bears are who we thought they are.
Re: NFL 2013-14
Trestman is being pilloried in the media and by the fans. While I agree with the consensus that he clearly made a succession of mistakes in the way he handled Cutler's return, I'm having a hard time getting too worked up about it.
He's had a shockingly strong debut considering it's his first season as an NFL head coach. He was bound to make some errors. Unfortunately coaches, unlike players, don't just get to shake them off and redeem themselves in the blink of an eye. It was the equivalent of a 3 INT game for a QB. Happens. Move on.
The loss of Tillman is really a twist of the knife, but it's the risk you run when you rely on so many old players in key positions. If they draft a single player on the offensive side of the ball next season, I'll be shocked. At this point they almost have to franchise or re-sign Cutler just to avoid having to waste a draft pick on offense.

Re: NFL 2013-14
Cutler shouldn't command a contract like Rodgers.
But the market might be at something like what Flacco and Ryan got.
So somewhere around $50 million guaranteed, over $100 million over 5 years, average of $20 million over the length of the contract..
I thought around $20 million/yr that Peyton Manning got last year for joining the Broncos was crazy but he's made them one of the superbowl favorites.
Ryan and Flacco aren't even going to get their teams to the playoffs.

Re: NFL 2013-14
No way in hell Cutler gets that kind of money. If he does, the Bears are stupid. I like McCown better personally. They need that money for their defense as Rob said.
Re: NFL 2013-14
McCown is an outstanding backup. A few problems with him as your QB though. He has good mobility inside the pocket, but lacks the healthy Cutler's ability to pick up more than the shortest first down with his legs. He's also more likely to get walloped for this reason.dbdynsty25 wrote:No way in hell Cutler gets that kind of money. If he does, the Bears are stupid. I like McCown better personally. He's also 34 years-old. This makes him much more likely to pick up an injury if given significant exposure and eliminates him as anything more than the shortest-term option.
His arm strength is well below average. While this makes him perfect for the horizontal, West Coast elements of Trestman's offense (which was made for guys like Ken Anderson and Joe Montana), it seriously limits the vertical options. This in turn makes it much easier for defenses to hunker down, play bump coverage and load up against Forte.
He's looked great. He seems like a completely amazing guy and has a refreshing approach to the game, but I'm afraid that given 2-3 more games he'll start to turn back into a pumpkin.

Re: NFL 2013-14
Cutler is going to get paid somewhere. Have you looked around the league? I'm not a big fan of Cutler, but I don't hate him like a lot of people do. I can think of a lot of teams who would sign him on the FA market.dbdynsty25 wrote:No way in hell Cutler gets that kind of money. If he does, the Bears are stupid. I like McCown better personally. As for yesterday while I think they should of removed him midway through the 3rd quarter I don't blame him for the loss. We had 2 TD's lost, one on an unnecessary hold and the other correctly over turned on replay. We threw a tipped int in the redzone (ok that one is on Cutler) and we elected not to take another field goal.
The reason people are upset is it was a winnable game and just a bunch of mistakes cost the Bears the game.
Personally I don't see Tillman as a big loss, he is old, slow and hurt and his ball punch hasn't exactly been working this year. I like the coaching staff we have, we just put them in place 2 years too late. They need to fix a lot of broken parts.

Couldn't agree more with this! Drives me nuts to think about how good this team could have been if they'd given Emery and Trestman the reins when this defense was still functional.Danimal wrote: Personally I don't see Tillman as a big loss, he is old, slow and hurt and his ball punch hasn't exactly been working this year. Re: NFL 2013-14
Taneyhill is still Taneyhill...and Mike Wallace is worthless too.
Re: NFL 2013-14
I'm cutting Tannehill a little slack. That O-line is pathetic. To paraphrase Harry Doyle, "That's all we got was 2 damn rushing yards?"dbdynsty25 wrote:Taneyhill is still Taneyhill...and Mike Wallace is worthless too.
And knowing that the O-line can't pass block or run block, and that Tannehill can throw pretty well on the move, why do they still insist on dropping him back and never letting him rollout?

Re: NFL 2013-14
I've asked the same thing...and some designed runs to keep the LBs honest. The playcalling is bad, yes, but he missed a TON of open guys last night, with no pressure, so a lot is on Tannehill's shoulders as well.icvu42 wrote:...why do they still insist on dropping him back and never letting him rollout?
Re: NFL 2013-14
I think the Phins need another refresh from top to bottom including Philbin and Fireland. Hopefully Ross cleans house and as much as I dislike Carl Peterson I think Ross should ask him to start the rebuilding process once again.
The O-Line stinks which doesn't help RT, they spent $60 million on a deep threat who is a decoy for the rest of the receiving corp, the defense still gives up too many big plays. Last night on one play Tannehill should have run the ball deep in Tampa Bays RZ. Even Chuckie aka Mr Positive called him out on that. He's got the athletic skills to do it but doesn't. And I still don't know if it's the coaching staff who has put handcuffs on him or if it's just poor judgment on the part of Tannehill.
Regardless the Phins are an average team with all the money that was spent.

Re: NFL 2013-14
I also don't really think putting Cutler in was a mistake. That first TD to Marshall had the kind of zip McCown doesn't have. Even the pick at the end of the half was more about Suh making a great play. It wasn't until later in the second half, when he missed a wide-open Marshall on a deep route that could have been a TD and then one-hopped his next pass, that he looked unable to play.
Even then, Jeffrey let two catchable TDs slip away, they lost the TD on the hold, and McCown audibled into a run on a day when the Bears could do nothing on the ground. Maybe McCown would have played better, but Cutler didn't cost the Bears that game.
Not really sure what the Bears should do about Cutler. I think franchising him is a bad idea, as he will probably not take it well. I think they just need to try to negotiate a reasonable contract and, if he turns it down, let him test the market and see what happens.

Re: NFL 2013-14
Playing him to start the game was defensible, if risky. I said on Twitter at kickoff that I worried about a cascading injury, and that's exactly what we got. I won't fault Trestman too fiercely for that, though. It was a calculated risk.Brando70 wrote:I also don't really think putting Cutler in was a mistake. I would have gone with McCown in the 2nd half. If they were playing a team with an average pass rush, it might have worked. But it was clear at halftime that without the threat of breaking loose on the run, Cutler was wounded prey.
As I said earlier though, Trestman has earned my respect and a bit of latitude, from me at least.
