I was stunned by how good it is. And it's a nice blend of contemporary lyrics and arrangements with the traditional coloring from the banjo and instrumentation. Really a strong year from traditional music so far with this, the new Steve Earle and the lovely Rodney Crowell/Emmylou Harris collaboration.

I was surprised at the Martin/Brickell album as well. I knew Martin was a very good banjo player from his stand up but never knew that he actually recorded anything much less released it.

Also, I, like pk, really dig the Savages debut. Really good stuff. A much darker, grittier Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Martin is actually one of the most respected pickers out there. He's won a Grammy or two as well for bis playing and produced a nice documentary a few gears ago about the banjo. It's really his first love.

Not new music per se, but I got my copy of the new ZZ Top box set in the mail today and the remasters of the 70s albums that have never been correct on CD sound spectacular (they remixed them all for the CD release in 1987 to sound more like Eliminator, and only Fandango! and Tres Hombres were corrected in 2006). And for the price conscious amongst you *cough* PK *cough* it's the 10 albums they released from 1970-1990 for the bargain basement cost of $40 from Amazon. I truly can't recommend this highly enough.

I know there are some classic 80s/90s alt rockers on here, and I think you'd like this Baltimore band Roomrunner who harken back to the Amphetamine Reptile/Sub Pop glory years of accessible noisey rock and roll.

It's funny, I've read through pages of this thread, and rarely run across a band name that I remotely recognize...let alone listen to. lol. I'm an old metalhead, mostly. I'm pretty eclectic, with the exception of punk/skateboard crap, but I can safely say that I need to listen to a little more spotify, and not spend so much time on my Nano in the car with whatever cruncher/headbanger song is next in my rotation... . A little Black Label Society, some Sabbath, a dash of Demon Hunter...and I'm normally good.

Have you listened to Ghost, Teal? They are great old-school metal -- clean sound, tongue-in-cheek Satanism, some really catchy songs. Check out "Ritual" or "Year Zero".

There's a now-defunct band that I also really love, The f***in Champs. They played 80s-style instrumental metal with prog and some electronic influences (mostly homages to classic videogame music). Not a lot of their stuff on YouTube, but worth checking out if you like things like "What's a Little Reign?" Their "IV" and "VI" albums in particular are really good.

I'm very pleasantly surprised by the new Nine Inch Nails album, "Hesitation Marks." This is not a sequel to "Pretty Hate Machine" or "The Downward Spiral" at all. It's a much more foreboding, broody, moody album than those frontal-attack classics.

Reznor clearly has been influenced by his soundtrack work and electronica with this album. There's still plenty of pain and anger in this album, but it seeps into your pores instead of jack-hammering your cranium.

I'm digging it.

The new album from my friends in Pinkish Black is streaming at Pitchfork. I'm about as impartial as a hired shill at this point, but I like this album a ton and I think it's a big step forward from their last which was my favorite release of 2012.

If you guys have a nice home system to listen on with some high end headphones...the new Nine Inch Nails release "Hesitation Marks" is absolutely fantastic to listen to. It's mastered brilliantly. They actually went and released two different versions, one audiophile quality and one normal master. Crazy to hear the minute differences between the two versions (you buy one, you get the other free just for kicks). Interesting to see different takes on mastering and how it can change the sound of an entire record.

So basically the audiophile version is equivalent to how CDs were made back in the 80s before the era of significant dynamic range compression.

The standard version is “loud” and more aggressive and has more of a bite or edge to the sound with a tighter low end. The Audiophile Mastered Version highlights the mixes as they are without compromising the dynamics and low end, and not being concerned about how “loud” the album would be.

Can't remember the name of the book, but it came out a few years ago and had an excellent discussion of how recording and mastering has changed over the years. After reading it I popped in a few old CDs and the difference between those 30 year old recordings and stuff from a decade or two later was very noticeable.

BTW, a huge Clash set was released today. Would be great to have, but $200 is pretty steep for the collection.

I broke down and ordered the $40 mini-box with all the albums. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a plan to release all the non-album singles except on the big box, so no remastered "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais", "Complete Control", "Armagideon Time", etc. for me.

It's a shame, because the remastering truly is one of the best I've heard. But unless I win the lottery the boom box ain't happening.
