Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
I may finally get out of the second month on an Impossible Ironman try. I only have the second month terror mission left, and I have managed to get there with a six-man squad consisting of a Squadsight sniper, two heavies with shredder rockets and one with HEAT ammo, a Field Medic support, a Tactical Defense assault, and a squaddie support. The assault and supports have laser rifles, the sniper has a laser pistol with Gunslinger (handy if I need to move her), and thanks to one heavy having Grenadier, I also have five grenades. If that won't get me through three Chrysallids and six floaters, nothing will.
Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Is that positive or negative surprise? $20 for a port of the complete PC game that still retails for $40 is pretty good if you ask me. $20 is the same price as Battle Academy which may be the best strategy game on iOS. Both games are real games with full campaigns and multiplayer, not just quick time wasters like 99% of the games in the App Store.Danimal wrote:$20? Really
Really looking forward to this. I never finished xcom on PC but I can see it being perfect for long plane flights and down time.

It's not a complete port though is it?LAking wrote:Is that positive or negative surprise? $20 for a port of the complete PC game that still retails for $40 is pretty good if you ask me.Danimal wrote:$20? Really
I heard the number of maps is really reduced and the game didn't have that much variety to begin with. Was anything else reduce in this complete port?
Oh BTW Battle Academy is on sale for $9 right now

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
The ONLY difference is there will be less map variety, everything else is supposed to be a complete port. This is the first time BA has ever been on sale. It's been $20 for a very long time now. EDIT: $20 since it was released in March of 2012.Danimal wrote:It's not a complete port though is it?LAking wrote:Is that positive or negative surprise? $20 for a port of the complete PC game that still retails for $40 is pretty good if you ask me.Danimal wrote:$20? Does it have Cloud saves? Can I play on my iPad and iPhone same game?LAking wrote: The ONLY difference is there will be less map variety, everything else is supposed to be a complete port. Yeah I know BA has never been on sale before their devs said they would never put it on sale so this is a first

About half the maps and there's no multiplayer. The graphics took a bit of a hit, which is to be expected, but reviews say it's mostly noticeable on the cut scenes.Danimal wrote:It's not a complete port though is it?LAking wrote:Is that positive or negative surprise? $20 for a port of the complete PC game that still retails for $40 is pretty good if you ask me.Danimal wrote:$20? I can't see myself dishing out $20 for this since I've played it to death on the 360, but even with the reduced map number, that's a lot of maps if you play through a couple times.

3.2 gigs of space is a lot of space for an app. Double anything else I have installed.

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Finally beat it on Impossible Ironman. I lost two countries, both in Asia where I had my base, so I was able to reap all the continent bonuses. I lost eight soldiers, including two majors, one of whom met a memorable death when a Berserker charged through the UFO wall my major was standing against, exposing him to the mutons behind his formerly full cover. I only had one mission I would characterize as bad, where I lost a major-level heavy and a squadsight sniper who got one-shotted behind full cover by a sectoid who I couldn't see but who could see me. I also managed the achievement for having one soldier in every mission, my original sniper, Claire "Nix" Duff.
All in all, one of the most satisfying videogame achievements I've experienced. The game got considerably easier after I had laser weapons and two squadsight snipers, but the alien base assault and fighting through a battleship to get the fusion cores were no joke, even with a strong squad. The only thing I didn't like was that the final level is pretty easy if you've played through once already and know what to expect.

This is where the genius of the game lies. The way you get attached to soldiers is unparalleled in games these days. State of Decay has a similar dynamic, actually, but other than that it feels like you don't see that kind of game design as much as you used to.Brando70 wrote:I also managed the achievement for having one soldier in every mission, my original sniper, Claire "Nix" Duff.

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Totally true. I even set up the ending so she would take the final shot. The only thing more fitting would have been if she had been The Candidate, but once the achievement was in sight, I didn't want to risk having her out for the testing.RobVarak wrote:This is where the genius of the game lies. I also had genuine sadness at losing my major-level Heavy. She was the other member of the first mission who survived deep into the game before running out of ammo as three Floaters patrolled into her area and her squadmates couldn't kill them all.
Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Pretty awesome expansion pack is set to release mid-November. XCOM: Enemy Within. I think it'll be $40 for 360/PS3 but sounds pretty awesome overall:

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Hell. Yeah. Looking forward to more X-COM more than any other game/systematic this point.
Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Just started playing on pc today.
Im late but better late than never. This is some cool stuff.
I have already lost a couple of good men out there. Including Mark Messier to a terrible tactical blunder.

I see!
I was thinking of the Oilers 5 Cup version

Another rough day out there... We lost, amongst others, Guy Lafleur, PK Subban and Major Larry "Big Bird" Robinson. The bag pipes so fitting.
How come no one told me about this game?

So bummed this is PC/Mac only. I am hoping it might run on my wife's MacBook, but I would kill for this on a console again.MizzouRah wrote:Getting excited for XCOM 2 2/5

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
It sold poorly on the consoles and frankly this game will be better being designed for the PC.Brando70 wrote:So bummed this is PC/Mac only. I am hoping it might run on my wife's MacBook, but I would kill for this on a console again.MizzouRah wrote:Getting excited for XCOM 2 2/5

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Oh, I agree completely that it makes more sense to have it on a PC, but the console implementation was really well done last time. Unfortunately a new gaming PC is not in the cards for me any time soon, and I hate to miss out on the sequel to one of my favorite games ever.Danimal wrote:It sold poorly on the consoles and frankly this game will be better being designed for the PC.Brando70 wrote: So bummed this is PC/Mac only. Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
I'm going to put the GTX 970 to the test!
I'll actually wait a bit.. I have too many games to finish before I devote my undivided attention to XC2.

Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
Yeah I didn't mean that to sound harsh. I just heard it did really poorly on the console, maybe they will do a mobile version again. Who knows maybe they will do a console version but they are saying PC only.Brando70 wrote:Oh, I agree completely that it makes more sense to have it on a PC, but the console implementation was really well done last time. Re: X-COM: Enemy Unknown
I hope they translate this game to the consoles. I enjoyed the previous X-COM on the 360.
