Normally I wouldn't post a rumor but Giant Bomb is pretty accurate most of the time.

I pre-ordered both Xbone and the PS4 yesterday. I realize that I am the point in my life where I don't have nearly enough time to play all the games I want to play and that the new game is just obtaining games and looking at the boxes/names on my Steam list. I will be a strangely happy man this fall looking at both consoles sitting, unused, under the TV while my daughter watches the same episode of Dora on Netflix for the 456th time and my son uses a controller as teething toy....

EDIT:

That GB rumor is batshit crazy but I agree with Dan, Klepek and Giant Bomb are usually pretty reliable.

Man, I almost bet Teal a next-gen game ($60) that MS would backtrack before 'Sony does the same DRM thing but with tech speak and misdirection'

Still, It's only a rumor. We can still do that. Any takers?

I didn't see it, but apparently Sony got a huge cheer from the Jimmy Fallon crowd when the DRM comparison was raised.

Bestbuy.ca

Canada, eh?

It comes with a bottle of maple syrup and a Tim Horton's mug.

Amazon has them back open for pre-orders so I did it in case this is true.

My understanding is amazon doesn't charge until they item is marked for shipping. If I am wrong and both of these appear on my next statement my wife is going to kill me. I mean literally not figuratively.

This is true.

And this just got a whole lot more interesting. Might just have to pre-order a Xbox One now too. LOL. For kicks of course.

In that case, she'll probably wanna unload the systems (as well as your body) quickly, so I call dibs. :D

On the system, not your body.

They'll add it back in at some point in some fashion once the internet rage dies down. People love steam and MS was trying to emulate that system.

This is true (same for BestBuy). I am with you, if both those appeared on the next statement I am joining the witness protection program. PK can make fun of me for having my balls in my wife's purse for all he wants. ;)

I find it interesting that this come right after the Jimmy Fallon thing last night where he had Sony on and said "Your system is the only one that allows people to play uesed games"

Jimmy Fallon caused this, not the internet

Not completely, no. The rage against this was enough that it left the normal geek-circle of these things. Kids were discussing it in elementary school, and parents were talking about it at little league games. (And I didn't start the conversation! ;) )

The link that sudz posted goes to an old FAQ with a message that some of the policies have changed. When i click on the link for the latest issue it can't find the page. I really doubt that there will be a complete 180 on their policy. Perhaps it will be less restrictive but I can't see them getting rid of all restrictions. Piracy could be a big problem on both of these systems if people are able to download any game and then share a PSN or Live account across multiple consoles without ever needing to go online.

EDIT: Now it appears the whole xbox news site is messed up. Perhaps they were hacked and this is all BS?

Your Feedback Matters – Update on Xbox One
By Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business posted June 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

Wow. Gotta thank all the fellow voices that came out against the anti-consumer crap. Great change!

Now to me, personally, PS4 is merely the better choice rather than the only choice.

Probably pick a Xbone up down the line now. PS4 and Sony deserve my cash first.

I thought the publishers were pushing for this, esp. the restrictions on used game sales.

Now will they flip on the price? Maybe get rid of Kinect to match the PS4's price?

If they cave, that will just embolden the people who raged about this the next time they roll out a product with some new DRM restrictions.

No, they would just have to offer something consumers want to justify giving up their ownership. I don't believe that trade off was there for most of the market this time around. (don't have to go to the store, do need to get up off your couch to swap games, etc)

Most importantly, I think you would need to see significantly cheaper games -from the start- over the competition who does not force you into similar concessions.

Not a chance they get rid of the Kinect. It's completely engrained into the way the console is meant to be experienced, especially all the TV features that they are marketing toward people beyond the gaming crowd.

I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed that they buckled. I see this is as possibly hurting digital distribution and potential Steam-like sales. I was really looking forward to that. Now if I buy a used disc based game (and yes, this was going to be allowed under the old rules) i'll still have to pop that disc in and out whenever I want to play.

I think if they stuck to their guns, they'd have gotten the first few millions of loyal 360 gamers to migrate to the new console, especially after the next Halo came out. They might also have an exclusive or two become a big hit, selling the consoles.

But in the long run, unless lower prices materialized the re-selling restrictions would have taken its toll.
