Hey iPads cost $500 and smart phones cost even more.

Kinect 2 wasn't going to come for free.

Maybe they will even raise XBL prices as the icing.

Sony will probably try to draft behind all the flak that MS is taking, with the used-games policy and the price, probably pull the same kind of things.

If console business declines, it will be from self-inflicted wounds.

If both consoles are around 500, I'll be happy with my 360 for the next few years until there is a significant price drop and more games.

The Show will still be produced for the PS3 and Vita so that wouldn't make me jump on a PS4. The XONE is a no go for me, $500 is insane especially in this economy and all the DRM that goes along with it.

Umm thanks? If I was going to continue to play on the PS3, I'd keep the version I have...graphically it has been the same or slightly worse for the past few years. I'm looking forward to a next gen The Show...and if it's confirmed for next spring on the PS4...that's when I'll be buying my next gen system. Without a doubt. $500 and all. Xbox One can suck it. I play online less and less, so that isn't important to me at all anymore. If I'm going to play something like Battlefield online, I'd rather play on the PC anyway where I have a nice keyboard and mouse to play properly. :)

The galling thing is that the CPU and GPU on these consoles are nothing special. They're considered low to mid end using AMD CPUs, which aren't exactly selling like crazy.

So you're paying for Kinect, kind of like people who bought the PS3, especially at launch, paid for the Blu-Ray drive. The performance will be noticeably better than the current generation but the gap between this and next-gen isn't as great as the gap between the PS2/Xbox and the PS3/Xbox 360 generation was.

Sony may price just as high (especially since MS just showed their cards). They are including fast and expensive RAM but again, the CPU and GPU are mid tier and they may include the Eye camera to try to compete against the Kinect -- not sure why, since these motion controllers are limited to a narrow set of dance and simple sports games for the most part.

Some people drop $500 every year for a new iPhone or iPad. What did people think these were going to cost?

The Live stuff impressed me more than expected and I'm much more confident in MS producing a good online user experience and interface than Sony. Of course if Sony delivers a good online experience then my decision will be harder but right now Live has earned my loyalty if I need to buy just one, or any for that matter.

Things I don't like. My setup is not good for a Kinnect Sensor and I'm not sold on this smart glass stuff.

It's funny, this keeps coming up. The difference is that I use my phone EVERY SINGLE DAY for hours per day. It's how I do everything...stay productive, stay connected, get sh*t done. All stuff that won't happen on a console. It's way more of a disposable income purchase than a phone is. Hell, I think I've turned my Xbox/PS3 on for a total of like an hour in the past three weeks. That was to play an hour of GRID 2 and realize it was a piece of crap so I could send it back to Gamefly. I get much more done, and much more enjoyment out of my phone/iPad and my 500+ dollars.

Well in MS's case, it's not about the games at all...it's about data mining the living room, enticing viewers to watch ads by offering achievements, and then using the sensors to verify compliance. I think it's funny that they gave up in trying to make enough good games to make the user *want* to get a kinect: "Screw that, let's just make the systems all require it!"

There's a broader market for phones and tablets and most people do not upgrade every year.

But there are hundreds of millions of people who buy mobile devices and in a given year, tens of millions who will upgrade.

MS has talked (very optimistically) about selling over 100 million XBox Ones this generation but that would be over 5-10 years. Some models of phones sell that many in a year, so much larger addressable market, much greater demand.

Then maybe you're not their target audience?

Some people play their consoles everyday for hours, I'm not one of them anymore but a lot of people do. So I think it is a valid comparison, just because its not for you personally doesn't make it any less valid does it?

Watching the EA event NEED For Speed Rivals looks pretty badass. I noticed one of the developers was using a PS4 controller and another guy used his iPad to launch a helicopter at him in the game.

Pretty much all trailers, cut scenes, slow motion cap, although they keep indicating what they are showing is actual gameplay. I honestly didn't see much gameplay. Sure they look promising, but much too eary to take anything away from any of them. Fifa is on display at E3, so hopefully we'll hear actual impressions.

As Dan said, it doesn't sound like you're their target. You don't seem to be in the market for any console, no matter the cost or the features.

If someone has a nice PC rig ready to go and doesn't have any reason to play console games, such as the suite of online features that XBL can deliver, then there's little incentive for that person to get a new console.

It seems to me a lot of the folks, not just you DB, who either claim they aren't ready for the next gen or aren't interested in what MS nor Sony have shown so far are people who aren't really interested in console gaming anymore for a variety of reasons. For those of us who are into console gaming and who don't really have a PC option, so far MS's new machine seems to deliver the goods.

I'd be very interested in the Steam box. That seems to be built just for someone like me who doesn't have a PC setup ready for gaming and who'd prefer to play on the couch, anyway. But I can't see that being delivered for much less than $500 anyway. Yes, it will probably have beefier, more future-proof hardware, and yes the Steam ecosystem is clearly more consumer friendly and free-market oriented than the controlled universe of XBL. But by the same token, there are so many things about XBL that PC gaming simply doesn't provide, and it looks to me like MS is really upping the ante in that regard.

I was looking at some of the Madden PS4 screens at they basically look the same as the current gen with the exception of no jaggies. Player models look identical.

Not sure what you watched but it was pretty much all game play footage. Yes it was slowed down and edited but it wasn't cgi trailers. We will hopefully get gameplay footage during the week but I don't know what people expect when they get a 3-4 minute segment, a handicam youtube video?

BTW When Dice said here is something everyone has asked for was anyone else expecting a new SW battlefront game?

$500? Uh, no.

I'll just return to PC gaming, head more toward mobile gaming and get a streaming box for $100.

Do gaming executives realize the economy still is tepid, at best? Hubris is causing MS to commit console gaming seppuku.

I figured $400. Another $100 does not bother me for a new console that will last me another 5-8 years.

A new Star Wars BF game is coming from EA!!! They showed a 30 second teaser.

What I was hoping to see for instance was a "behind the quarterback camera angle" , "braoadcast view" of NBA Live, and a side camera view of Fifa, but honestly, I don't think it would have given the viewer a clear representation of it looking any different than what we see today on the 360 and PS3. What they showed was fine (was most impressed with the worn look of the jerseys in Madden), and I guess it's unrealistic to expect anything substantial. I'm sure we'll see better footage as we get closer to release.

Phones and tablets are far more multi-purpose devices than consoles. Phones have become essentials in most people's lives.

Console gaming is still a hobby for which the hardware price has almost doubled in the last decade and the software price has jumped at least 25 percent. Are the games that much better, more novel and deeper than those on the Dreamcast or PSX? Sure, they look better. But other than the online gaming infrastructure and basic conduits to other entertainment options, what are these current-gen and next-gen consoles really delivering?

I played FAR more innovative, funky and just plain fun games on the Dreamcast than I have on the 360. Yes, the online infrastructure was beyond crude compared to XBL. But I don't think the software has evolved that much in the last 14 years other than graphically.

I also don't like how MS is shoving Kinect down our throats. I have little interest in Smart Glass, either. And don't even get me started on DRM.

But bottom line is that I'm gaming less and less. My kids are playing far more on their mobile devices than on a console. So it makes little sense for me to shell out $500 for a console. There are just far too many other important things to inhale my money, such as kids' soccer, lacrosse, basketball and travel hockey, kid guitar lessons, downhill skiing for family, college educations for three kids, building equity through home improvements, car and mortgage payments, portfolio investments, scotch, :) etc., etc.

Something has to give, and a $500 gaming console is an easy choice to skip. If this thing drops to $350-399, I'll probably get interested.
