Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
Bears stretch to pick Kyle Long and it smells a lot like last year. Emery clearly targets a guy and isn't much interested in value issues. I'd be more inclined to cut him some slack if 1) the Pats didn't just take everything but the keys to the Sex Boat from the Vikes to move up into the 1st round and 2) the Bears didn't desperately need more picks this year.
Emery might be a good evaluator, but it seems like he needs some lessons on how to manipulate the draft process.

Wait we are picking #30!
Love the pick! A lb who doesnt make up gfs and tackles players from the SEC.
Great first round!
LETS GO RAMS!!!!!

Every reporter around here was convinced there was a team dumb enough to draft this scumbag in the first round. looks as though teams dont draft as fans of college teams. Too bad these "experts" dont expert without their own bias. Once again the media proves worthless.
hope the Rams wont be the assclowns who draft this thing.
Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
Alec is a better athlete and player than Jarvis Jones. He might be the best LB out of UGA since Odel Thurman or Boss Bailey. He is super quick and fast and a tackling machine.XXXIV wrote: Love the pick! A lb who doesnt make up gfs and tackles players from the SEC.

If he can stay out of trouble, he will be an All Pro. I wanted the Falcons to take him, but being in Atlanta would be bad for Alec.... too close to home for him. I just hope the Rams have some veteran leadership that can help keep him out of trouble.
I will miss watching Alec play on Saturdays in the Red and Black.

You have to wonder, with the run on lineman already well under way, if it made sense to buy at the end and not focus instead on a position like CB, where there were some great players available. I can understand them not taking Tyler Eifert given the acquisition of The Black Unicorn, and I'm glad they didn't reach for Manti "George Glass" Te'o, but taking another LB, CB, DT, or WR made more sense.RobVarak wrote:Bears stretch to pick Kyle Long and it smells a lot like last year. Hard to tell. Long does seem to have the physical tools so we'll see how this shakes out.

Yeah he was a 2nd or 3rd round pick until all this happened but he had nothing to do with it.pk500 wrote:ESPN's obsession with Te'o is ridiculous. Next thing you'll see are plates of Cajun catfish on set in front of Berman, Gruden and Kiper.
f*** they had someone in Hawaii to interview him about not being selected. Two questions
1. Why
2. Is college out already WTF is he not in school?

The Unicorn is really overrated and Bears fans will find that out this year.Brando70 wrote:I can understand them not taking Tyler Eifert given the acquisition of The Black Unicorn,
Honestly if we, excuse me the Bears (until T'eo is gone I can't say we) are better than 8-8 I'll be shocked.

Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
I think that taking last year's draft into account explains a lot. Emery is much more interested in getting the athletes that he wants than maximizing return from the draft. This isn't a recipe for outright failure, but it seems like an odd philosophy to embrace. You used to see a lot of this in the MLB draft. You can minimize risk by scouting, evaluating and selecting from a self-limited pool and ignoring all the attempts to incrementally improve the value you get out of the draft. OTOH, you will never be as successful as those who can evaluate well and understand the game theory behind the draft. Those who can do both are admittedly few and far between.Brando70 wrote:

Dan, I think it's way, way too early to even think about making an educated guess at the record this year. You've got a totally new coaching staff and philosophy, significant FA changes and an unfinished draft. Too many variables at this point.

Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
I never would have expected the Bears to go 10-6 last year. Agree with Rob that it's way too hard to predict what the Bears will do.
As for Martellus Bennett, he may be overrated, but the point is that it's hard to double up on TE when there are a lot of other needs. I also can't fault too much for drafting an OL considering depth is as big of an issue as talent.
I think Rob's baseball analysis is a good one -- Emery seems to be looking to put stock in physical abilities first, with the idea you can develop their skills. That seems at odds with with the realities of the salary cap and immediate expectations of owners and fans, but it's also too early in Emery's tenure to really evaluate his drafting abilities.

Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
I just reread my own post and it's too damn ambiguous.
There are two ways to look at the value of a player in a draft. One is what is the inherent level of performance that you can expect from him: short term, peak and career. The other is to look at where the market of drafting teams expects that player to be drafted. It's obviously related to the inherent value to some extent, but there isn't a 100% correlation. That delta is where the smart GMs feast.
Emery seems to be worried solely with the former. This is sort of a simple approach. You don't have to worry about the needs of the teams drafting around you. You don't have to really waste resources trying to discern the strategies of the other teams. Obviously, I'm oversimplifying but the general idea is find a guy you think will be around and draft him.
The latter is more sophisticated. Even if a guy like Long grades out at an A+, if he's not perceived by the league to be worth a No. 20 pick then it would be foolish to take him there. Jimmy Johnson was the king of this sort of thinking. If you have enough faith in the depth of you scouting, that is to say that you have contingencies upon contingencies ready to go on draft day, you can trade down in situations where the guy you want isn't widely seen as being a value at your pick. Sure you risk losing "your guy" but you always have another good option in your pocket.
For whatever reason Emery eschews this approach. He did it last year with McClellan and he did it yesterday with Long.

Never too early. Bears won't have over 8 wins, my guess is 7-9. I'll let you get your educated data on the situation and then decided if you want to wager on it.RobVarak wrote: Dan, I think it's way, way too early to even think about making an educated guess at the record this year.

Re: NFL Season 2012-2013
See this is where I disagree. I believe in drafting for need but only if in doing so you're getting someone who can play. Plus if the offense is planning on running 2 TE sets or splitting one out at WR well then it seemed clear to me what the pick should of been.Brando70 wrote: As for Martellus Bennett, he may be overrated, but the point is that it's hard to double up on TE when there are a lot of other needs.

I am relieved that the Chargers took the teo enema. I was worried the Rams might ruin their draft with that scumbag.
