Injustice: Gods Among Us

Post by Teal »

Anyone else pick this one up today? I played through the story mode, and I promise you have never played a fighting game like this. The story is actually very well done, well acted, and meaty. I played solid for about 5 hours on the story, and enjoyed the story as much as the fighting. There's a lot here, too, from STAR missions (246 of them!) to different ways to fight, online MP...its VERY good.

I was intrigued by this one so I downloaded the demo. I deleted it within 15 minutes. Interesting to hear your impressions Teal. Maybe I'll give it another look.

Yes I would be interest in hearing some details on why its like no other fighter.

I gave up on fighting games a long time ago specifically for the reason they all felt the same. So would love to hear some more details.

Thanks

Well, if it weren't for the story mode, it might BE "just another fighter". But the way the story is done (I don't generally read comics, but I have to see the backstory for this one), is really good. The fights are integrated in to the story very organically. The demo was not indicative of the game, other than the most basic element, which is a little like the last MK game...but they did alot of work to separate this one from that. Elements of the STAR missions, such as using Superman's heat vision to blow up cars being hurled at him, or Batman throwing batarangs at a charging Solomom Grundy, sometimes precede the fighting, as well. I don't generally get into fighting games myself, but I like the DC heroes, and this is real fan service, because there are many characters I don't even recognize. Just wla very well built game.

I might have to try the demo. So its more than just picking 2 guys and beating each other up, there are environments to interact with. Are they large?

LOL, you can't even apologize accurately on that phone. The Windows phone keyboard is terrible. You can download a multitude of different keyboards on an Android phone. ;)

That said, I downloaded the Injustice demo last night, but didn't really seem that interesting. I'll give it a shot at least.

Well, color me ignorant, but I didn't figure that I'd see the 'anti-WP' stuff on a thread about a fighting game...sheesh. Really hate that s***.

ANYWAY...the environments are multi-tiered, each stage having at least 2 different environments you can knock your opponent into, and there are interactive elements within all the environments. The special power moves are very cool, and are tailored to the individual heroes/villains very well.

I'm really enjoying it, and I soured on fighting games a long time ago...

There are a couple of times in the story mode when Green Lantern says "sh*t", and the tone is dark, but it's got zero of the MK gore in it. Good, solid fighting game. Really dig it. So do my boys.

Green Lantern saying sh*t? So is he the only character who curses? If so, what's up with that? I woulda guessed Flash for the gutterspeak.

Really well made game. If you like fighting games, this one is top notch. Suprisingly balanced out of the gate.

This game is a completely delightful surprise to me. I had no expectations. Never liked any of the MK games at all and I'm much more of a Marvel guy than DC. Despite all that I'm having a blast 4-5 hours in.

I love the perfect cartooniness of the fighting. Joker hitting a dude in the face with a pie, shooting him repeatedly and then finishing him off with a point-blank rocket launcher to the face is just plain fun. The environmental attacks and the totally cool ability to knock guys through buildings etc. are absurdly awesome.

And the story is top notch. It's not feature film worthy, but it's absolutely strong enough to have made a damn fine story arc in the books. There's a nice blend of humor and comic book pathos to make it feel like you're really playing in the DC universe.

How are the controls? Are the moves hard to pull off? Is there a lot of button combos required?

It's sort of a mixed bag for me so far. You can do a broad range of excellent moves with a few relatively simple combos. There are some that are just far too hard for me, but I don't really miss them at this point. So generally I'd say they're good.

The problem for me, and it's not one I've seen before in fighting games, is that the left thumb/directional controls needed for the moves don't register consistently. I don't know if this is a lag issue because I'm using a wireless controller or something inherent in the game. It's not a huge problem but every 3-4 fights or so I'll get hung up because of it. I noticed it during the tutorial (which is very good) because once every 10-12x even a basic (L)(R) + X combo might not work. I've switched b/w the stick and the d-pad to see if there's a difference and it's pretty negligible. I may plug in a controller to see if there's any difference.

Let me reiterate, this isn't anything approaching a game-breaking situation. The story and the fighting are more than good enough to make it just a blip...even if my description makes it sound like a lot more.

If you remotely like comics or fighting games I'd say give this at least a rental. Skipping it altogether would be criminally ignoring some fine entertainment.

Finished the story tonight. Outstanding job with the writing and characterization, as well as voice acting. This game just screams "polish" from beginning to end. Fabulous cut-scenes, really honest to the spirit of the characters, cool music and maybe the coolest end credits of any game I've ever played. Clearly a labor of love for the designers.

Teal, thanks for raving about this one and putting it on my radar.

This game is fantastic. I've been watching my kids play and the story mode is engrossing. I think I like watching more than playing. Controls wise much easier pulling off moves using the dpad than the stick.
