Top single player games of this generation
As we are gearing down with this generation of games, what are your guys top 5 to 10 single player game experiences? Maybe there are some that others might have overlooked that can be picked up cheap.
Mine (Not necessarily in order) Xbox only
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Dragon Age Origins
Skyrim
Tomb Raider
Alan Wake
Mafia 2
Gears of War
Portal 2
Obviously alot of other good games, but these seem to stick with me more than the others that I've played.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
GTA: San Andreas, the only other games that even came close were, Bully and Red Dead Redemption, notice a common theme here? I'd also like to give an honorable mention to the first Resident Evil, that game really terrified me.

I'm sorry this generation was definitely Bully and RDR. I forgot the topic line all together.

The Uncharted series on the PS3 is the best singleplayer experience of this gen in my opinion. The first one totally took me by surprise. Great graphics controls and story.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
In no particular order;
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Uncharted 2
Red Dead Redemption (possibly the best ending to a videogame ever)
GTA IV + Expansions
Dishonored
Deus Ex: HR
Portal 2
Crysis 2
Far Cry 2 & 3
Saints Row 3
I am probably forgetting some others. I have not played Fallout 3 or Skyrim (for shame, I know).
ddtrane,
Bully came out on the PS2 first but if we count it as this generation I'm right with you. Great, great game.

Walking Dead
Braid
Portal (original)
Vanquish
Uncharted 2
Mirror's Edge
Super Mario Galaxy
Journey is way up there too, but I don't think it qualifies for 1p. It can be, but much of it's impact was gained by the presence of someone else with you along the way.

Uncharted 2 -- Neck and neck with Resident Evil 4 for my favorite game of all time. Shoots you out of a cannon and doesn't let up.
Skyrim -- Best single-player world in a console game.
XCOM -- I love how 45 minutes of tense flanking can be undone by one alien asshole sitting in a blind spot you forgot to scout.
Mass Effect -- Best story.
Fallout 3 -- despite the crappy ending, rivals Skyrim for best world. Love, love, love the VATS system and wish more games used it.
Most overrated to me: Red Dead Redemption (ducks thrown bottles of Sarsapariilla). Tried to start it three times and just couldn't get into it. I simply do not like the GTA style of gameplay and hated all the mini tasks like herding cattle.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
Heh, I almost felt compelled to list that one in a special 'overrated' category as well. +1 on this from me, as I agree with you wholeheartedly. Really like the world, but dislike what they have you doing in it. Cowboy errand boy simulator.Brando70 wrote: Most overrated to me: Red Dead Redemption (ducks thrown bottles of Sarsapariilla). Agree with RDR being overrated as well. It was good, and a different type of game, but clearly not worth "Best 1p game this Generation"...that's way over the top.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
Add me to the small list of naysayers about RDR. I like sandbox games, but I found RDR to be boring, online and offline. The mini-tasks were lame, and the rides from mission to mission were filled with vast spaces of empty, a metaphor for the entire game for me. And like all Rockstar open-world games, the weapons' targeting system was clumsy.
"Cowboy errand simulator" -- that's CLASSIC, Web. But my exact sentiments.
Disclaimer: I have no affection for the Old West, so I didn't have the same excitement for this game as many around here. I love mob and city crime movies and novels, though, so the GTA franchise is pure gold for me.
I've only played in this generation for the last 15 months, so my base is shallow compared to most of you cats. But my favorite single-player games so far have been:
Dishonored
GTA IV (I'm with Trane, though: San Andreas was the best GTA game.)
Forza Horizon
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
Rockstar Table Tennis
I have XCom, Fallout 3 and Bioshock in my "To Play" queue. I imagine some or all of those will join my list of epic single-player games from this generation.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
I will defend RDR's honor.
It was one of my favorite games. The combat and shooting was so-so, and therefore I didn't really like the zombie expansion which was just shooting, but I found open-world exploring much more interesting in the old west than a modern urban jungle.
Treasure hunting, hunting game, or wandering on horseback, and I even thought the story arc had more gravity than most video games with stupid and cliched plots. And aren't all GTA games errand-boy simulators anyway?
Maybe I'm an exception though, as I'm getting tired of GTA and thought San Andreas was boring (the only GTA game I quit out of lack of interest).

I loved, loved RDR and was going to second everything that Naples wrote...until I saw that he thought San Andreas (the best GTA game) was boring which is clearly a sign of mental illness.
But seriously, I thought RDR was awesome and the ending of the game (the last hour or so) is my favourite ending to a game ever.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, and San Andreas was fan-f***in-tastic.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
Were there some irritating fetch quests in RDR? Sure.
Has there been in every friggin' GTA game..ever? Sure.
Does that make RDR overrated? Not by a long shot.
Hell, I almost never galloped my horse from one place to the next. Get him up to a slow trot, and it'd take 20 minutes to get to where I was going. And enjoyed the view. Some of the best scenery in a game, period. And like Macca said, one of the best endings in gaming. Truly classic, beautifully spaghetti western.
Online? Fun as hell. No, it's not Battlefield, and it's not even hard. But it was a great social online game. The 'lobby' was a truly fantastic idea, giving you the whole damn world as a hangout joint between games. Then being able to jump into PvP matches, or just take on hideouts, do hunting competitions, race horses...the game had it all. Honestly, I'd much rather Rockstar make a sequel to RDR than yet another GTA (which looks like San Andreas 2.0).
Top SP Games for me:
Tomb Raider (just awesome)
RDR
Just Cause 2 (another great sandbox game)
Bioshock
Batman Arkham series
Portal 1 and 2

Ha, I also love "Cowboy errand boy simulator."
RDR is the most disappointed I've ever been that I was disappointed in a game. I really wanted to like it. And the fetch model isn't really that different than Skyrim or Fallout 3. There's just something about how Rockstar games has always presented their fetches -- timed races that have no purpose other than to stick a race into something, making mundane tasks required to accomplish some objective, etc. I'm sure the story is fantastic, I just don't have the patience to find out.

Whenever I play RDR I feel like I'm a participant rather than just a spectator in a Western movie or TV show.
My 21 year old daughter even loves playing the game.

Re: Top single player games of this generation
I thought RDR was great, but I like westerns too. I tried to play GTA IV a couple times and got somewhat far before I just started getting bored and found myself always just wanting to cause trouble and have the police chase me. I've never been that big into the whole crime/mafia thing. Yet I thought Mafia 2 was a very good game. Who knows?
Vanquish, Bioshock, Battlefield BC 2, and Oblivion would probably be my honorable mention.
