not 'new' but just got into the album Libraries by 'The Love Language'. Pretty cool in a Morrissey/Arcade Fire kind of way.

If you like 50s/60s style rock, Signs and Signifiers by JD McPherson is a real throwback. I guess it was originally released in 2010 but released on a major label this year. Some of the tracks remind me of being a kid in the 70s spinning some of my parents' old 45s on the turntable. A great listen if you like old school.

Amazing record and really, really great engineering as well. Has a great woody, analog sound that is perfect for the material.

I still have albums to hear -- one of my most anticipated records doesn't even come out until tomorrow -- but I will post the usual link when I do my write-ups. An odd year, with a whole lot of pretty good records but few that raised up into the level of true greatness. I do know that the local DFW band Pinkish Black will top my list.

Here's a link to their soundcloud page if you want a taste. Volume is key, so crank it as loud as you can.

I'm really digging the Pinkish Black. I followed them on SoundCloud as a result. Thanks for sharing.

Alright Scoop! They just signed a deal with Century Media so they'll be getting wide distribution and tour support in the future.

No idea why I didn't give MOG or Spotify a try sooner. Holy crap what a great service. I prefer Spotify personally but both services are great. Nothing like being able to listen to full albums the week of their release. Saves me from having to "obtain" them to try them out instead of buying straight away and getting burnt. Way late to this party...I know, but for anyone else left behind, you NEED to try these services.

Couldn't agree more. Spotify has been a staple in my music rotation since joining.

Thanks to Spotify I can't even remember the last time I downloaded an album and it is perfect at work.

I'm a MOG man. Better sound quality, cleaner interface and a much better native Web application.

Saw the Reverend Horton Heat last night from center stage, 6 feet from the front, at a small club in Syracuse. Holy f*ck -- what an incredible show. I wore plugs and today still feel like I'm hearing things while underwater! :)

Yeah, you don't use a smartphone or an ipad. Spotify is king as far as I'm concerned in terms of interfaces and SQ. I ONLY use devices, hardly ever on my computer.

If anyone's interested, I posted my 2012 favorites on my tumblr. The Pinkish Black I repped earlier was #1.

Tweak Bird put out a full length (well, 27 minutes, so full length for them) self-titled album in 2010 that is also worth tracking down. I wish I could have seen them on their tour with the Melvins this fall but it didn't come near enough for me to go.

Amazing what a few effects can do to a voice. The resulting vocals remind me a bit of Black Moth Super Rainbow.

You think that's done with effects? I'm not so sure...saw an interview and that first player seems slightly androgynous.

I think there's some processing. The guitarist does have a high tenor to start with, and his brother, while naturally lower, also sings a lot of falsetto harmonies from behind the kit. Just the live clips versus the studio work makes me think theres been a bit of studio tweaking, as it were.

My top 10 albums of 2012:

1. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange. I hate to agree with so many reviewers, but this album is fantastic. I don't care for much R&B, yet I can't stop listening to this record. I still hear new sounds, rhythms and lyrics with every listen.

2. Bob Mould - Silver Age. Rock god Bob is back. This album reminds me a ton of the records Mould made with Sugar, which were superb.

3. Kelly Hogan - I Like To Keep Myself In Pain. I’m a sucker for women who can sing. No yelling. No autotune. No overreaching. And this is one of the best female voices I’ve heard in the last five years.

4. Japandroids - Celebration Rock. Rawk! Rawk! Rawk! A balls-out rock-and-roll record.

5. Tame Impala - Lonerism. No sophomore slump here. This band continues to crank out groovy, trippy psychedelia that I dig even when I’m sober.

6. Antibalas - Antibalas. Fela Kuti lives through these guys. This album isn’t as good as the band’s previous release, Security, but it’s still damn good.

7. Jack White - Blunderbuss. I can’t believe this is Jack’s first solo record. He’s involved in so many other projects that I figured he went alone at least once. This record shows why White is one of the most inventive, creative American rock musicians even though he’s rooted in blues and country.

8. Lianne La Havas - Is Your Love Big Enough? Another wonderful female voice that I discovered around Christmas. Another superb English songstress. Just think of the excellent Corinne Bailey Rae with about twice the talent, and you have La Havas.

9. Metric - Synthetica. I love bands that deftly fuse rock and electronica, and Metric has achieved that with aplomb for a while. This is the best electro-rock album of the year, as it also infuses new wave and indie. Pulsating, dark, excellent.

10. Beth Orton - Sugaring Season. Quiet quality. Orton’s storytelling and voice remain superb even this deep into her career on this mellow, mature, pensive album.

Single of the Year: “Cut The Deck” by Mickey Hart Band. A really nice song that carried me through a certain period of this summer.
