Great new album as well - takes a few more listens than the first to really get it, but once you're in, it's pretty cool.
Very interesting interpretation/analogy of their show. lol
I happen to love the new album. I think I actually like it more than the last. It did, however, take me a couple listens for it to fully click (not because it is a bit weird, but more because the melodies/hooks didn't sink in at first)...

Overall, the show was great - he was fully up for the task and sang with a ton of theatrics. The end may have been an extended session of weirdness/violent thrashing around the stage, but he really did deliver.

I saw Ariel on his 'before today' tour & was about like that. Everything from high energy then fighting with the sound guy then antagonizing fans then a few super tight performances then band in-fighting - all in one 90 minute set. It was exhausting. I found the live show as challenging as some a bulk of his music - worth it if you can hang with it!

After multiple listens and going back and fourth about my opinion, I have officially decided that the new Animal Collective - Centipede HZ is quite amazing!
I'd be curious to hear what others are thinking about it. It's very multidimensional and extremely layered. And, without trying to come across as an audio snob, if possible it should be listened to on a full stereo at a decent volume. And the seems to be a HUGE difference in my listening experience when I listen to it on vinyl on large speakers than on any other format/system. The vinyl experience delivers some truly amazing frequencies and reveals a ton of beautiful low end. It is a great reference vinyl to show off the difference between digital and analog.
Listened to it a couple of times and didn't dig it. Then again, I thought "Merriweather Post Pavilion" was very overrated, too.
Animal Collective is one of those acclaimed bands that either hasn't made a record that has connected with me or for which my musical tastes haven't shifted to appreciate.

Every once in a while I give them another try - but like you, I haven't found the connection yet. I keep thinking "is there something wrong with me?"
Besides the new Ariel Pink, I'm also digging the new Grizzly Bear, Wild Nothing and Twin Shadow albums.

They are definitely not for everyone. Truth be told, I have a hard time enjoying anything prior to 'Merriweather'. But I am in the camp that think that album is brilliant. And the other factor that keeps me interested in them is the fact that Panda Bear's 'Person Pitch' album is maybe in my top 5 all time records.
I got the opportunity to see them live at Pitchfork last year and they absolutely blew me away - which helps keep me interested in them. All in all there seems to be this sort of grating/harsh aspect to a lot of their music that I am surprised I can get past and really enjoy the melodies and subtleties that are mixed in.
IF anyone is missing 80's Touch & Go or early 90s Dischord, then this new MEtz record might be for you. Streaming now at The New Yorker, of all places:
I can't decide if it's good or just hits on so many key reference points that I like it by association. I'm thinking the latter, but if all it does is makes me dig out Jesus Lizard, Killdozer, Laughing Hyenas and Nation Of Ulysses records then I count it a win.
How the f*ck did I not know about this band?!?! The two newest albums are just amazing.
That's a really good question. I just figured you knew because they are so clearly in your wheelhouse.
Anyone else dig Moon Duo? Their new record is hitting my psych nerve the way Tame Impala is hitting PK's. The official video for this song sucks in that particularly horrible Portlandia way, but the album cover rules, so here's the song "Sleepwaker" with the groovy cover.
Had one of those live music moments you dream of. Went to a fundraiser last week featuring like 6 bands over 7 hours. Most were disposable or worse. Then this girl steps up.
The video is utterly ridiculous except as a compendium of music vid cliches and it's not even remotely her best song, but a fair representation of her voice (amazing) and her looks
Very much in the Kelly Hogan/Neko Case bag, her set was stunning. She played acoustic with the backing of a delightful strat-playing guitar player who laid out wonderfully tasty accompaniment. 80% of the crowd was violently ignoring her, but she was putting it all out there. Closed with a vicious version of "Can't Let Go" by Lucinda Williams that had me basically proposing marriage.
She works out of Rockford, which is ridiculous. She should have a regular spot at Schuba's or something until she gets the chance to break big. Anyway, check out her stuff on Spotify or MOG if you're into gorgeous singer-songwriter country stuff like Emmylou Harris.

Thanks for the info Paul. Hadn't heard about the new album - downloading from zune right now.
BTW, a few weeks old but Corin Tucker's solo LP is a nice extension of Sleater Kinney style. Found the album on vinyl last week and have been enjoying it. Also been playing a lot of Zee Avi lately.
One of my favorite albums of the fall has been out a couple of months now. I went on a big Raveonettes kick the last year and their latest Observator, while somewhat a departure from their past albums, has some nice grooves.

That album is the s***. I hope I sound that energized in ten years. He pulls in what made Copper Blue so fantastic without sounding like he's repeating or ripping himself off.
