Is there a 'normal' season mode in this, or is it like Madden with the online stuff?

All ofd the traditional modes are still in, including Season Mode. They have a menu option called Other Modes that has all of the traditional modes of play.

You are being forced to be way more defensively responsible in this game. It's like actually playing for Ken Hitchcock!
Also, you need to have a grip on how fatigued your players are. Playing on 10 minute periods, fatigue is much more of a factor this year. And jamming on the LS with your players eats up their fatigue even faster. If you get the feel that your guy is sluggish at all,it's time to get that line off the ice, because you are primed to give up a breakaway.

I found myself switching up lines during play way more often than I have ever done before. It also forced me to get minutes to my 4th line.

I am loving the speed and fatigue factors. It's going to really temper some of the jackasses online that just gambled on everything because they new there were no consequences. Gotta play smart, disciplined hockey!

Weird. Kept losing connection after 40 minutes of play on all OTP plays that I had today.

So is playing PES style defense stupid in this game? What I mean is that on defense are the AI teammates better this year and playing defense or you do have to manually select them?

I played 1 game last night because of time but if I'm playing the defender and I don't switch it sure seems my defense was as aggressive as the CPU defense.

All I have to say wow the CPU can absolutely dominate you on the offensive side of things.

I've only played one 1p game, flyers v Tampa on superstar difficulty, 7 min periods. I was a little curious as I outshot the CPU in first 9-1 and led 1-0, but in the end I lost 3-2 with shots at 22-17. Pretty fun.

Online, I'm getting more comfortable with the skating, but it's pretty low scoring stuff. Simple positional D is far more effective this year. One-timers are practically non-existent, but much more like real life honestly.

It seems to me the new poke check should promote a much more team oriented type of play for online knowing your gonna get stripped if you puck hog, i just worry that the figure skaters are going to kick up a fuss and it will be tuned down and become more like past years.

Played about 5 randoms tonight and saw numerous cheap goals from the blue line. I'm hoping it's just chance but I was working my ass off to get legit shots on goal and my opponents were flicking shots from just inside the blue line for goals. VERY frustrating to dominate a team and have that s*** happen.

Well I'm in a huge scoring drought against the cpu, in the last 8 games in a Penguins franchise I have been shut out twice and the other 6 games I only scored 1 goal in each. :(

What level are you playing? Pretty low for me as well on AS on the few offline games that I tried with different teams. Wonder if customizing your team's AI may help.

We're just doing a GM Connected on default Pro, as sad as that is to admit. I've had a few games where I can barely get any offense going at all, as well. I think we're 12 or 13 games in at this point (Vader might be further after the latest sim, since I watched football all day yesterday, I don't know).

Wow, you seriously love this game!

But how does a game "rain" a bar? (I kid, I kid. But spellcheck doesn't catch those things a lot of the time)

Yeah I played through the group of 6 games I had last night, out of those 6 only won one 1-0. Did make it make to overtime a couple of times but lost both of those too, one in a shootout and the other with under 10 seconds to go in OT.

When offline, I basically just tried the 'Play Now' games with different teams to see if their gameplay tendencies ressembles real life and so far I tried them on AS because I enjoy the more up tempo, and speedier game overall. Not a lot to judge on based on 4-5 games but I have yet to win one on AS losing the typical 1-0, 2-1, 3-1 games. From what I've heard Pro level this year is harder than 12.

That is troubling.

One thing I like this year is that clean wristers from the slot are hard to earn but are very dangerous. Also, the goalies play very realistically and I haven't seen any exploits in OTP yet, leading to low scoring defensive games.

I did flick in some long range wristers in the demo, so hopefully that's not out of balance here.

Do you guys play hardcore or just leave it on default.

On default the CPU was missing passes and played I think a more realistic style of hockey. On hardcore passes were on a string.

We've been playing on Pro defaults. I've seen a lot of missed passes and in general have had very good games. There are the occasional games where I put in a lot of goals (one game where I somehow managed 6), but most of the time I struggle to mount consistent offense. In past years I'd have go-to moves, but it seems this year that nothing is a gimmie for me at any given time. I've found the net a few times with Perry coming in from the side and cutting toward the goalie and then quickly back out and flicking it top corner, but for every 1 of those I make, I get stonewalled 5 times. It seems any time I stick to a tactic, I get shut down--if not that game, then the next few. For a while I could only skate in and take wristers from the high slot. Then I couldn't even get there, I was getting creamed. I started dumping it in, but then that became tough too. I'd work it in and backskate, then flip it back to a defensemen and try to work it around...then the CPU started laying out everybody with very light checks.

If anything, that's the only thing that bugs me so far. The CPU seems to just brush me and my guys are falling down, but even if I don't take control, my CPU defenders don't do nearly as good a job. So really setting up in the zone eventually leads to my guy getting blasted when I thought he would be relatively safe, and a quick odd-man rush on the other end. Overall, though, I'm extremely impressed because the games are never easy for me, even on default. Granted, I don't know hockey nearly as well as the NFL, so I'm sure there are some weird AI happenings here and there. But it sure FEELS like hockey to me.

And when the announcer comes in with the "every rush seems like a completely different team" comment, I feel like pumping my fist in the air. Because the only time I get that is when I'm consciously changing it up during the game to get some effective offense. Coincidentally, those are the only games where I seem to get 3 or 4 goals.

Then you have games like my game against Vancouver. I've never felt so thoroughly terrified by a CPU team. I got in the first period and was on fire, nailing 3 quick goals for a 3-0 first period lead. But man, that team felt scary-fast. Every time they'd get the puck I was grasping at air and in a full retreat on defense. I thought I had a pretty safe lead to protect though. Nope. I still led 3-1 in period 3, as I mustered no more offense for the rest of the game after that opening barrage. And their speed was too much to contain. They got another goal with 3 minutes left, and the tying shot with :45 left.

Then the game winner in overtime as they just blazed by me.

Normally I'd feel like it was cheap late-game comeback, but this just felt like a much faster team finally getting the payoff for skating circles around me the entire game.

Sorry about the poor quality as uploading videos from the early release is not allowed. Last night my team couldn't do anything and before you had the puck there would 2-3 guys on top of you. So when that happens don't be shy about dumping the puck in and in the odd case, even score a lucky one... 8)

So I have had 10 minutes with the ST and don't stand a chance to get to play tonight.

What am I missing? DSP Club? Any leagues?

Menu confused the s*** out of me the 10 minutes I was in there.

I was struggling to score too until I bumped up pass assist two notches. I find with zero pass assist, I struggled to make any passes, or cyclying the puck because lord only knows where I would put it.

As for the CPU, I have noticed some missed break out passes, pucks skipping over their sticks, etc. I have had more CPU icings in the games I played this weekend than I probably did all of NHL12.

Another nice thing I noticed, on 10 min periods the CPU no longer leaves their lines out for 2 minutes at a time. They seem to change more frequently in an effort to conserve fatigue......
