16...8 only has like 6gb of usable space. Way too small for a WiFi only device.

What db said, 16 or nothing. If Google had included a MicroSD slot then the 8GB would make the most sense.

After what seemed like an eternity Ice Cream Sandwich is finally available for my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Pretty slick. I thought I'd mention it in case some of you still have that tablet.

Yes sir, was going to mention it myself but held back for the same reason, lol. Yeah it's pretty slick on a larger tablet and there's speculation we may get JB, but it's just speculation and rumor. And I like the new stock wallpaper.

Amazon just announced a bunch of tablets. Two that stood out is the NEW Kindle "Paperwhite" with a all new display with an 8 week battery life with the backlight on.

The other NEW tablet is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 16GB tablet with 1920x1200 tablet for $299 (ships Nov.20). They dropped the price on the updated Kindle Fire to $159 and bumped the performance.

Wow they just announced the 4G LTE 32GB Kindle Fire HD for $499. 8O

EDIT: Holy SH*T "You get 250MB a month, 20GB of cloud storage and a $10 appstore credit, all for $50 a year!" 8O 8O

I'm SOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD

Yawn. Nexus 7 and iPad 3 all day everyday. The rest are a joke. Kindle's are NOT Android tablets as far as I am concerned. Nice display on the HD, but it's still a joke of an OS skin.

The $50 a year package is something NO one has atm. So I do think the Kindle Fire 4G LTE is a solid deal. :)

Not for 500 dollars with that horrendous interface. No way in hell you should buy that. Asus is coming out with a Nexus 7 w/ a cell connection shortly. Sit tight.

I'll check out the N7 when they release it but I use my Kindle everyday partly due to I buy so much stuff from Amazon so I do love their ecosystem and their UI really wasn't a big issue for me because it was part of a highly customized OS.

In a way it's similar to iOS in that you're locked into their UI, OS and ecosystem. The only thing that will turn me away from the new Fire HD is if they partition the drive again. If they do i'll get something else.

What is the big selling point of eight-week battery life? Do people really exist in a world where power isn't available for an overnight charge for up to two months? Or are people too damn lazy to recharge a device more than once every eight weeks?

Just ordered the 32GB Kindle Fire SD model for $249.

PK, battery life for mobile devices IS very important. It's like asking a male porn star if he would like a 10" Johnson. Only you can appreciate that example. :)

The mobile nirvana is to never have to charge up your device. It also means you will never have to replace your battery. Now the device that goes for 8 weeks on 1 charge is the Kindle Paperwhite tablet.

How many tablets do you have now?

The 250 MB on LTE is gone quickly. Nice for $50 a year but otherwise, not you're paying for a lot of bandwidth upfront with the $200 difference.

Have to see if they ramped up their performance.

Amazon recently got a content deal which had provided Netflix with some of their most recent films.

If that service has decent content for $79 a year and one of these Fire tablets can output 1080p video to the big screen, it might be a decent combo.

But it's likely that if they get good content on that service, they wouldn't be able to keep offering it for $79 a year.

The 250MB is good for maps and light surfing. Prime has gotten really good, with lots of movies, shows and books. I'm resigning for another year. I also like being able to get stuff in 2 days. 1 day shipping is $3.99 and it's bailed me out already.

Kindle Fire isn't suppose to have Google Maps, is it, since they are doing their own app. store and services?

Hey at least you're getting the SD version.

Oh and why the hell did you order that junk? The nexus 7 is so far superior it's not even close. Have fun with those persistent ads on the lock screen. Woohoo to special offers!

Because I rely so much on Amazon. I buy tons of stuff from them. I love their app of the day and actually I like the ads on the lock screen because hopefully they'll be tailored toward my purchasing habits. How cool would it be to have a deal flash up on a videogame that's been heavily discounted which i've been waiting for?

But I buy a lot more than videogames from Amazon. I use them to buy supplies for my business. I'm a Prime subscriber so I use the Kindle Fire for movies and TV shows and free two day shipping. So I don't see it as a junk tablet. I don't see it as an Android tablet. I see the Kindle Fire SD as an "Amazon Tablet". It's basically a packaged device.

The only thing that will make me cancel my order is if they partition the device again. I haven't gotten a definitive answer on that yet.

If you're only using it as an Amazon device, then why does it matter if the storage is partitioned? It's almost guaranteed to be since that's how they lock the thing down with that horrendous skin. It shouldn't matter to you if it is not...especially getting the 32gb "SD" version. When did they announced the SD one anyway?

Partitioning does matter to me because I essentially paid $200 for a 1.1GB tablet on the original Fire. That's all that's available for apps. I sure as hell ain't paying $249 for a 7GB apps partition or whatever they decide to set it at.

The 7" SD tablet was announced first with 1280x800 resolution. The HD is the 8.9" tablet with 1920x1200 and comes in 16/32/64 GB configurations.

Umm...they are both HD branded tablets. At least you know what you're buying.

They may store the locked screen ads on the local storage, so that you get those ads even if you aren't online.

Engadget just posted an article saying Amazon is considering letting users to opt out of the ads. It'll probably cost you to opt out but at least they are thinking it over. I don't have any problems with the ads myself. Supposedly they are breaking even or maybe selling it at a small loss for the new tablets.

The new Fires keep getting worse and worse as tablets. Default search engine is BING. Ugh. I had a phone with that at one time (the Verizon Fascinate) and nothing could be worse than being shoehorned into that horrible search engine.

Now the new Kindle Paperwhite e-Reader...I'm in. :)

So which Fire did you actually order Rod? The 32gb HD 7" for $249? There still is no SD version...only last years model that's 8gb for $159. Cuz you said you liked the idea of the LTE, but that's only on the 500 dollar version. Lots of misinformation in this thread coming out of your fingers. :)

Oh, and no opting out of the ads. Good times.

Yeah the Kindle Paperwhite sounds sweeeeet. 8)

The SD is the updated Kindle Fire which looks the same as the original KF but with a slightly better CPU and a 1024x768 screen. Freaking Amazon CEO just confused the hell out of everyone at the PR. Even Engadget was struggling to keep up with all the models. He did flash a picture of the KF SD which like I said is basically last years KF. Maybe Amazon just dropped the SD not to confuse anyone else, LIKE ME ! :)

I got the 7" 32GB for $249 and I thought the HD was the 8.9" tablets but yeah it's the 7" tablets as well. I really don't consider 1280x800 HD whereas I feel 1920x1200 is.

Here you go regarding the SD !
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amaz ... fire-2012/

"Internally, the device is called the Kindle SD as it now plays second-fiddle to a pair of Kindle Fire HD devices with 1,920 x 1,200 displays, but will be called the "new" Kindle Fire in public. Amazon has also slashed the price of the hardware, which at $159 is $40 cheaper than Google's Nexus 7 -- as well as competing with e-book tablet adversaries Kobo Arc and the forthcoming Nook Tablet replacement with an "incredible" 243ppi display, unless Barnes & Noble are also producing SD and HD hardware. It'll begin shipping on September 14th, with pre-orders expected to begin very soon."
