Sons of Anarchy season 4 came out on DVD today and on sale for $20 ($25 on Bluray) at BB and amazon. I had heard some good things about this show but I wasn't attracted by the biker gang story. Then over the past year I watched seasons 1-3 on Netflix streaming and got hooked. I picked up season 4 today so I could watch it before season 5 starts in about 2 weeks.

Breaking Bad:

I just caught up with the series and am looking forward to Sunday night's episode. The last three minutes of the last episode, I don't think took a breath.

Breaking Bad is going to end with Walter dying and I not giving a s**t! On the other hand, I'm rooting for Jesse....ohhh how things have changed from the beginning of the series.

What I find fascinating about the show is that an episode can drag on without much action or drama, but the last minute or two of the show can completely change the way you viewed that particular episode.

I just found Hell on Wheels.

Great show... another great show from AMC. I was a little bit skeptical that it was going to be like the Rubicon they had a while back but the show is amazing. Not as crazy as season 1 of BB but just as rich as Mad Men and BB. It's almost like they turned Red Dead Redemption into a good TV show. The first episode would be Red Dead but as you get into it it's a not a western but more like AMC story telling about the west and railroads.

Basically this show is about the growth of the Railroad and a man who's wife is killed and he's out for revenge. There are times where things turn out BB convenient but for the most part is a good take. The Union Pacific is building west. It's not a western in the sense there's 50 million shoot outs and a bunch of high noon gunslinging. Just a solid show.

AMC is pumping out more good shows than anyone on TV right now.

Finally got around to the finale, which was excellent.

I had a few issues with the way that he tied up loose ends and the way that part of the story was told, but on balance really enjoyed it.

The scene with Lydia in the diner was one of my all-time favorites. The way Cranston played that scene was utterly brilliant. You could read his eyes and see him pass from menacing, to intrigued, to aroused as she manipulated his engorged ego like a pro. A small but gripping moment in a show that has gotten a bit too comfortable with the grandiose as of late, I think.

Another great touch was the reveal at the end of Walt's scene with Pinkman.

Now I'm fairly obsessed with the idea of how we get from the Walt's shitter to the point where he pulls the M60 out of the trunk of that Cadillac.

Walt's cancer must be back. The scene in which he is shown laying on the plank, preparing for a CT scan, was a telltale sign even though none of the script mentioned it. It was a classic case of the journalistic tenet, "show, don't tell."

The return of the cancer could be one of the reasons behind the volatile mix of hubris and desperation that has bathed Walt this season.

That was my take on it. Gilligan was coy in the NY Times when asked about the results, of course.

I took it as "he's still cancer-free" too. I thought the finale was good, but very rushed. I also wasn't thrilled with the cliffhanger. I was expecting :30 more show post-reaction shot (like Hank returning to the table or something). This is all fine-tooth comb stuff. Great show.

I get the impression that they'd do more shows if AMC would let them.

When they signed the deal to finish the series with 16 episodes, BB was kind of in limbo -- great critical reception but not the ratings.

Not sure if ratings are improved this season.

Holy sh*t -- I understand why this show has received so much acclaim. Fantastic. Great pacing, crisp dialogue with air to breathe (note to Aaron Sorkin), distinct characterization and excellent acting. Claire Danes is wonderful in such a complex role.

I watched Homeland last month. I really enjoyed it. Excellent intensity, and the tension of paranoia versus legitimate response to a security threat is perfect for the subject matter. Season 2 Sept. 30!

I also wrapped up all 5 seasons of Friday Night Lights the other day. Another great show. The amount of empathy and connection to the characters that show built was remarkable.
